"Zack, this will be our second movie together. I hope this one is as fun as the last!"
In the meeting room at Wald Pictures, Victor, the CEO, shook hands with Zack Snyder. They had just signed the contract for Zack to direct The Purge.
Zack smiled. "One movie isn't enough! You know I'm already dreaming about 300!"
Victor laughed. "Yes, yes!"
He was a little worried, though. The Purge only cost $8 million. But 300 was going to cost almost $60 million!
Zane had promised Zack he would have the money in 10 months. Victor knew Zane was rich (worth over $200 million), but $60 million cash was a lot.
"Maybe we can get a loan?" Victor wondered.
He didn't know Zane's secret plan. Zane had hired experts to make money from the upcoming Asian financial crisis. Zane wasn't worried about getting $60 million. He was planning to make $120 million!
"Mr. Jones," Director Zack asked eagerly, "is everything ready for The Purge?"
"Relax," Victor said. "The crew is ready. We're just waiting for you."
Clap!
Zack clapped his hands happily. "Awesome! Are the actors ready, too?"
"We picked a few people for the main roles," Victor said, "but you get to make the final decision. The boss respects you a lot."
Zack felt warm inside. Most new directors don't get to choose their actors. Zane was a true friend!
"Oh," Victor added, "the boss is too busy right now to be the producer. So, we picked a very talented young man to help you instead. I hope you don't mind."
Soon, a young man walked in. It was Kevin Feige, Victor's assistant.
"Hello, Mr. Snyder," Kevin said politely. "I'm Kevin Feige. I'm happy to work with you."
Even though he was young, Kevin seemed very confident.
This was part of Zane's big plan. He wanted to train Kevin to be the future president of the movie studio. But first, Kevin had to prove he could make a hit movie.
Meanwhile...
Zane wasn't in Los Angeles. He wasn't even in America! He had flown to London, England.
His old friend Cindy, from ITV, picked him up at the airport.
"Hi, Zane!"
"Hi, Cindy!"
This time, Zane only brought one bodyguard, Ray.
"Cindy," Zane said as they got in the car, "I'm here to check on Britain's Got Talent. I bet you have a surprise for me!"
Cindy smiled. "You're lying."
"What?" Zane laughed. "You don't believe me?"
"Man," Cindy laughed, "even your bodyguard doesn't believe you!"
Zane looked back at Ray, who was chuckling.
"Okay, okay!" Zane admitted. "I'm also here to see my girlfriend, Adriana. But... I really am here for the show, too! We're planning a huge joint launch at the end of May!"
Cindy nodded. The Got Talent project was huge. They were going to have the winners from the UK and the US compete against each other. It was going to be amazing.
"I'll take you to the hotel first," Cindy said. "We can start work tomorrow morning at 8."
"Sounds good!" Zane said.
After a nice lunch, Cindy left to go back to work.
"Boss," Ray asked, "are we going to see Ms. Adriana now?"
"No," Zane said, shaking his head. "She's busy rehearsing for her fashion show. We can't bother her. Let's go to University College London instead."
University?
Ray was confused. He knew his boss hated studying! Zane read books for 2 hours every day, but he always complained about how boring they were. Why would he want to go to a college?
University College London.
In a small dorm room, a young man was in trouble.
"Mr. Christopher Nolan," a stern woman said, "you graduated 7 months ago! You can't live in the dorms anymore. You have to move out today."
"I'm so sorry!" Christopher said. He looked helpless.
Why was he still there? Because he was broke!
In 1996, he had spent all his money ($6,000) making his first movie, Following. Then he spent the rest traveling around Europe to show it to people.
Now, he had less than £50 in his pocket. If he got kicked out, he would be sleeping on the street.
