Kevin's smile vanished, his voice turning icy. "Sallie, you're not a kid anymore. I won't keep indulging you in this game of playing hard to get just to squeeze more out of us."
I couldn't help but laugh bitterly inside.
Before Jill entered our lives, the Noahs showered me with the finest things without me even asking. I cherished every single gift—so much that I kept even the packaging.
But once Jill appeared, they started claiming I was taking what wasn't mine.
So I began declining their offers. Then they accused me of putting on an act to manipulate them into giving me more. They labeled me greedy and repulsive.
Later, when I requested essentials for college, they snapped, "Why do other students manage without all this? You're just being shallow.
"Money isn't free, you know. We've provided for you all these years—we don't owe you lifelong support. If you want something, work for it yourself."
After that, I never asked them for anything again.
