Sallie's POV
I gasped desperately for air, like someone who'd just been drowning in pure terror. Fear had consumed me completely, leaving me shaking and breathless.
Time seemed to blur together until the bright daylight had faded into complete darkness. Finally, I managed to claw my way out of that crushing panic that had wrapped around my throat.
I wasn't certain if my mind was playing tricks on me, but Todd's voice seemed to drift through the air. Lifting my head, I spotted him charging toward me through the black night, flashlight cutting through the darkness like a sword. He looked like salvation itself, bringing light into my nightmare.
Todd reached me, breathing hard, his expression twisted with concern. "Sallie, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
I always had protection detail, but somehow they'd still managed to grab me right off the street.
