Chapter 10 - Chapter 9

That evening, in the restaurant dining room that had witnessed their long journey, Rizwan sat next to Emma, his wife, gazing at the soft dancing light of the candles in the center of the table. The atmosphere was warm and intimate, far from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen and the diners who had just been enjoying the flavors of the archipelago in Brooklyn.

Emma held Rizwan's hand and whispered softly, "Riz, we've come this far... but I know this journey isn't over yet. You need to think about the next big step, not just for the business, but for us too."

Rizwan looked deeply into Emma's eyes, his heart feeling open. "I know. I feel torn between the dream I've had since childhood and my responsibilities as a husband. I want to take this restaurant to the international level, but I'm afraid that if everything happens too quickly, I'll lose what we've built together."

Emma smiled softly. "We got married not only because of love, but because we believed we could support each other. When you're unsure, I'm here to strengthen you. Don't be afraid to take risks, as long as we go through everything together."

Their conversation paused when Miguel, the sous-chef who was like a brother to them, entered carrying financial reports and restaurant development proposals. "Chef, I've recalculated the costs of expanding the food truck on Bedford Avenue. If we submit another proposal to investors, we'll need an additional 75 thousand dollars in capital. However, with promotion from the Indonesian Consulate and media buzz, I'm sure this is a great opportunity."

Rizwan grabbed the document and read it seriously. "That's a lot of money... but we're almost at the top. Emma, what do you think? Should we accelerate the expansion? I'm worried that the quality of our food might decline."

Emma nodded. "Accelerating expansion is indeed a risk, but with a new marketing plan and the weekly 'Rempah Talk' event that customers love, we can manage it well. The most important thing is that the team must be solid, and we have to delegate more so that you are not overburdened."

Rizwan sighed deeply. "My prayer is that Dita understands... we've talked, she supports us. This isn't about choice, but about how to maintain our bond and dreams without sacrificing each other."

The next day, Rizwan and Emma led the morning briefing with the team in the kitchen. Their voices were loud but full of enthusiasm. "First, we have to maintain the quality of the slow-cooked rendang, clear chicken broth soto, and Balinese satay—all the ingredients must be fresh. Second, next week's event promotion at the Javits Center will be a milestone. I want every chef to understand the philosophy of archipelago, not just the recipes." Miguel added, "And don't forget, we have to prepare a plating demo for the VIP guests."

Alex, a new staff member, raised his hand in confusion, "Chef, may I suggest a new menu item? Let's make a mango salad with a sweet and spicy Javanese peanut sauce."

Rizwan smiled. "Great! Innovation comes from all of your ideas. But keep the balance of flavors, okay? This is our home."

The atmosphere was filled with energy, hope, and caution. At the end of the briefing, Emma approached Rizwan, "Look, we've started building a legacy. But always remember, this journey doesn't belong to one person, but to our big family."

That night, Rizwan stood on the restaurant rooftop, gazing at the Brooklyn sky filled with stars. He pictured Dita's smiling face on his phone screen during their video call. "I'm ready for the next chapter," he murmured. "With love and passion, I'll keep bringing Indonesian cuisine to the world."

That evening, in their simple but comfortable apartment, Rizwan and Emma sat across from each other at a small dining table, enjoying hot tea. The room was quiet, but there was a palpable tension in the air, fueled by unspoken doubts.

Emma broke the silence first. "Rizwan, I know you're still thinking about Arifin's offer yesterday. It's a great opportunity, but you seem reluctant."

Rizwan looked down, his hands playing with his teacup. "I'm afraid, Em... If we expand too quickly, I'm afraid we'll lose the essence of what we've built together. I'm also afraid that the pressure of this business will drive us apart."

Emma sighed, moved closer, and took Rizwan's hand. "Business and home are two different things, but they influence each other. We have to be honest with ourselves and each other about what we want most."

At that moment, Rizwan's cell phone vibrated. A message came in from someone he didn't know very well in the business: Adrian, a new investor who was also an old friend of Emma's. The message was short, but it heightened the tension of the evening. "Riz, let's talk about investment opportunities. I believe I can help you maintain the original vision of your restaurant."

The next day, Emma arranged a meeting at a cafe with Adrian. Rizwan arrived with mixed feelings. Adrian, with a reassuring smile, opened the conversation, "Rizwan, I know your struggle to maintain authenticity while trying to grow. I don't want you to lose your identity. This investment won't demand a change in vision, but it will provide financial flexibility."

Rizwan nodded slowly, "But what about the pressure from other investors? I want the business to be not just about numbers, but about stories and culture."

Adrian was serious, "That's what I admire about you guys. I'm not the type of investor who pressures people. In fact, I focus on strengthening the brand and customer experience. The key is clear communication and division of responsibilities with Emma, your partner."

After the meeting, Rizwan pondered. That night, in a dimly lit room, he sat facing Emma. "I feel a new hope, but this is also a test for both of us. We have to be truly involved in every step. I don't want this business to ruin what we already have."

Emma smiled, "I'm willing to take on all of this with you, Riz. We are not only a couple, but also business partners. We are strong because we complement each other."

However, doubts still crept into Rizwan's heart, especially when Reza, Rizwan's former colleague in Paris who was now his competitor with a fusion-themed fine dining restaurant, appeared. Reza visited their restaurant in Brooklyn one night, offering a letter of support but also with a tone that implied a challenge.

Reza said, "Rizwan, I hear you're having trouble getting funding. I understand your authentic vision, but the culinary world is tough. Have you ever thought that expansion should be under tighter control? I have connections that can help you immediately, but you have to be ready to adapt."

Rizwan stared intently, "I'm not the type of person to give up easily, Reza. I believe every chef has their own way and brings their own flavor to the world. I will continue on my path."

That conversation troubled Rizwan's thoughts about the line between compromise and losing one's identity. That night, Emma accompanied Rizwan on the balcony, gazing at the city lights.

"Whatever happens, I want us to stay together. Don't let business drive us apart," Emma said softly.

Rizwan held Emma's hand tightly. "I'm afraid of losing you. But I'm more afraid of losing what we've built together."

They embraced in silence, realizing that their journey was still long, full of challenges and difficult choices, but with love as their guiding light in the storm.

After going through a period filled with pressure and very important decisions, Rizwan and Emma began to realize that they really needed some special time to strengthen the bond they had just built. One afternoon, amidst the busy preparations for the Indonesian culinary festival at the Javits Center, they sat together on the restaurant rooftop, gazing at the Brooklyn sky, which was beginning to twinkle with city lights.

Rizwan took a deep breath and said softly, "Emma, I think we need some time alone, away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant and the pressures of business, to truly refresh our hearts and minds."

Emma smiled, holding Rizwan's hand, "I agree. We just got married, and I want our honeymoon to be more than just a trip, but an experience that can strengthen us, facing all the challenges that have come and will come."

"Where do you want to go, Em?" Rizwan asked curiously.

Emma chuckled, "How about we try an adventure honeymoon? A combination of adventure and tranquility. We can start in Bali, enjoying the beautiful beaches while hiking on Mount Batur, then continue to Lombok for snorkeling and glamping under the stars."

Rizwan nodded, his eyes sparkling. "I like that. We need moments that bring us closer together, challenging yet calming. Activities like kayaking, light hiking, even yoga together can strengthen our bond."

They began discussing the plans in detail, creating an itinerary that balanced adventure, relaxation, romantic dinners with local specialties, and visits to culturally rich places that would inspire them anew. Emma added, "Don't forget, we also need to schedule some downtime at the beach, a picnic for two, and those sunset-watching moments I love."

Rizwan smiled warmly, "This will be a new chapter in our lives, not only as a couple but also as partners on this journey."

That night, they talked late into the night, sharing their hopes and concerns. Emma said, "I'm afraid that if we get too caught up in business, we'll forget to nurture our relationship. This honeymoon is our promise to take care of each other."

Rizwan cupped Emma's face, "Em, I promise I'll always be there for you, in the kitchen and beyond. We'll be strong because we're walking this path together."

They locked eyes in a meaningful silence, aware that the journey of business and love they had chosen would be filled with challenges, but together they were confident they could overcome them.

***

Rizwan and Emma had meticulously planned their honeymoon with great enthusiasm, choosing adventures in Bali and Lombok as their main destinations. However, as the departure date approached, various challenges began to arise, testing their readiness—not only physically but also emotionally and mentally.

One evening, as they sat on the balcony of their apartment enjoying a cup of hot tea, Rizwan brought up the topic. "Emma, I'm worried about the weather and travel conditions. A honeymoon with hiking and snorkeling sounds exciting, but we have to be realistic. What if it suddenly rains heavily or the road conditions become bad in the mountains?"

Emma nodded, "I've also read some reviews about the road to Mount Rinjani, which is sometimes slippery and difficult, especially during the rainy season. But I believe we can overcome it with careful preparation and the help of expert local guides."

Rizwan continued, "Besides that, I'm also worried about our health. We have to be in top condition so we can enjoy all these activities without any problems."

Emma smiled. "Don't worry, I've made sure we have enough rest time and reminded us to take our vitamins. I've also made sure we have comprehensive travel insurance and noted down the contact details of the nearest hospital."

However, things got more complicated when a logistical problem arose. Emma received news from the travel agent that there had been a change in the flight schedule due to bad weather in Lombok. "This is really testing our patience," she said softly to Rizwan.

Rizwan held Emma's hand. "We have to be flexible, see this as part of our adventure. Remember, a honeymoon isn't just about the destination, but about how we experience it together."

They both agreed to adjust the itinerary, moving the planned hiking day to a day with better weather, adding time at the beach and spa to allow for more relaxation.

At their accommodation in Bali, they faced another challenge: unexpected noise from renovation work at a neighboring hotel. Rizwan was frustrated, "I came here for peace and quiet, not chaos."

Emma held Rizwan's shoulder, calming him down. "We're here for us, not for the perfect atmosphere. Let's make this our story, how we stayed happy even though the situation wasn't ideal."

In Lombok, while snorkeling in Gili Trawangan, Emma almost panicked when the current suddenly became strong. Rizwan immediately jumped in to save her, holding her tightly and bringing her to a calmer area. After that incident, they decided to sit on the sand. Emma said, "I'm grateful you're here. This little challenge made me realize how much I need you, not just at the restaurant but also in my life."

Rizwan responded with a gentle touch on her cheek, "Me too, Em. We've been through a lot together, this is just the beginning. Together, we can get through anything."

On the last night, by the beach with candles and the sound of the waves, they gathered in warm silence, planning their future careers and love. Rizwan said, "I realize that our business and family journeys are intertwined. This honeymoon is not just a time for the two of us, but a foundation for everything to come."

Emma added, "That's right, and I promise we'll always remember the lessons from this adventure: patience, communication, and unwavering love."

They gazed at the night sky, believing that together, no obstacle was too great.

After a honeymoon filled with adventure and intimacy that rebuilt the strength of their relationship, Rizwan and Emma decided to visit Rizwan's hometown before returning to their busy lives in New York. This visit was not only to reconnect, but also to strengthen family ties and open up new opportunities for their business.

At Rizwan's parents' house, the aroma of traditional home cooking welcomed them warmly. Rizwan's mother was busy preparing side dishes, while his father gave wise advice about life and hard work. The atmosphere was filled with family warmth that filled the evening.

Suddenly, a neighbor, Mr. Wira, arrived with two young men. "Mr. Rizwan, let me introduce my two nephews, Aldi and Raka. They are very interested in working at your restaurant in New York. They want to learn and help build your business," said Mr. Wira hopefully.

Rizwan smiled, then invited the two to eat together and discuss the opportunity. "This is good news, Aldi and Raka. The opportunity to work abroad is not easy, but if you are willing to learn and work hard, we welcome you with open arms."

However, in the midst of this happiness, a health crisis came unexpectedly. Emma began to feel unwell, with symptoms of high fever, muscle pain, and extreme fatigue after days filled with activities. Rizwan immediately took Emma to the nearest health center.

The doctor explained, "Mrs. Emma may have a serious infection that needs to be treated immediately, and she should rest completely. This condition could have serious consequences if not addressed quickly."

Rizwan fell silent, his face filled with worry. "How could this happen now? Everything was fine during our honeymoon."

Emma weakly held Rizwan's hand, "Riz, maybe my body is signaling me to take a break. We can't keep pushing ourselves."

At Rizwan's parents' house, the atmosphere became more serious. Rizwan discussed recovery steps with his family and Emma. He said, "I have to make sure Emma gets the best care. My business has to run, but I don't want to lose her."

Rizwan's mother reassured him, "Health is everything, son. Everyone who loves you wants to see you happy and healthy."

During Emma's recovery, Rizwan learned to manage his time better, delegating tasks to his team in New York, and agreeing with Aldi and Raka to become new employees who would start helping at the restaurant once they arrived in New York with a strong desire to learn.

One night at the village house, Rizwan and Emma sat in the yard enjoying the evening breeze. Emma said softly, "I'm grateful to have you, Riz. This crisis has taught us the importance of balancing hard work with self-care and relationships."

Rizwan hugged her, "I promise, after this, we'll manage our lives and business more wisely. I love you so much, more than anything."

They both gazed at the starry night sky, realizing that their journey in life and business was full of twists and turns, but with mutual support, all challenges could be overcome together.

Before returning to New York, Rizwan and Emma decided to attend Rizwan's school reunion in his hometown. The reunion was filled with laughter and warm nostalgia. Old friends shook hands warmly, sharing stories about their lives with each other. Rizwan kissed the hand of his favorite teacher and greeted old friends he hadn't seen in a long time.

Amidst the crowd, Rizwan reunited with Mr. Joko, the man who had guided him when he first started learning to cook in their small kitchen. Mr. Joko smiled proudly as he patted Rizwan on the shoulder, "Wow, son, you've become a great chef now. Seeing you succeed in bringing Indonesian cuisine abroad makes me very proud."

Rizwan replied warmly, "It's all thanks to Mr. Joko's guidance. I will never forget where I started."

The reunion also turned into an unexpected moment when they received requests from several relatives and neighbors who wanted to join their restaurant in New York as employees. "Mr. Rizwan, my cousins and I want to learn how to cook and work at your restaurant," said an enthusiastic cousin.

Emma and Rizwan exchanged glances, happy with the new opportunity, but also aware of the challenges ahead.

However, their happiness was short-lived when Emma began showing signs of fatigue and a high fever again. At first, it was thought to be just ordinary fatigue, but then Emma fell seriously ill. Rizwan panicked and immediately took his wife to the nearest hospital. After a thorough examination, the doctor stated that Emma had an infection that required complete rest and intensive care.

In the hospital waiting room, Rizwan spoke to Emma's parents over the phone, "Mom, Emma's condition is critical, but I will always be by her side. I will take care of the business, don't worry."

Emma, who heard the conversation, whispered weakly, "Riz... I want you to know that I believe you are strong. But don't forget me behind all your busyness."

Rizwan held her hand tightly, "You're the one who makes me strong, Em. We'll face this together; I won't leave you alone."

Several days passed, and with the support of family and doctors, Emma's health slowly began to improve. Rizwan started learning to balance his time between the hospital and the restaurant, placing more trust in his staff.

That moment served as a reminder to Rizwan and Emma of how fragile life is and how important it is to take care of their health and their relationship amid their business struggles. Before returning to New York, they prayed together with their family and promised to support each other so that everything could move in a better direction.

As the plane took off, Rizwan looked at Emma, who now smiled weakly but full of hope. "We're going home with a new spirit, for our dreams and our love."
