Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Demon Insects

Under the call of Emperor Zhengyong, the guards, eunuchs, and others outside Jiaotai Hall couldn't wait to retreat back into the hall.

Many people even pressed their faces against the door crack to look outside.

At this moment, Emperor Zhengyong, disregarding his image, occupied the largest crack to look through, as did Zheng Yi.

Through the door crack, they could see that all that was left on the steps outside Jiaotai Hall was the corpse of Dongyun Feng.

And that bronze short sword, after absorbing enough essence blood, slowly floated up.

Then, to the disbelief of many, the short sword slowly decomposed into more than a dozen flying insects the size of broad beans, buzzing as they rushed out.

"Puff!"

"Puff puff!!"

These flying insects moved at incredible speed, diving into the crowd, instantly piercing through their heads, and flying out with their brains splattering.

No discrimination between friend and foe!

These flying insects strangely attacked indiscriminately, whether it was the Imperial Army, the Imperial Guard, or even the sacrificers from the Sacrificial Institute were all within their attack range.

In just a few breaths, nearly a hundred people died at their hands.

On the chaotic battlefield, the size of these dozen or so flying insects also began to change as they devoured more brains.

By this time, they were as big as a baby's fist!

Zheng Yi, with his keen eyesight, observed carefully.

He saw that these flying insects looked like mosquitoes, but curiously, they had two pairs of wings on their backs, and their mouthparts were extremely long.

"Monsters!"

"There are monsters!"

As the mass of soldiers died and these flying mosquitoes grew, someone finally noticed them.

Many quickly gathered together, wielding their swords and blades against them.

Even a First-grade Martial Artist tried to use his inner strength to shake them to death.

Unfortunately, it was impossible; these flying mosquitoes moved too quickly, easily dodging the martial artists' attacks.

Even if weapons struck them, they merely shook their heads and continued to fly.

"Your Majesty!"

Inside Jiaotai Hall, Wang Zhongyi said, "These insects are legendary demon insects of the Immortal Family, and now without a master, they attack indiscriminately."

"With just these dozen demon insects here, Yang Xuansu's rebels will crumble!"

"Well done..."

Emperor Zhengyong nodded slightly, "But the flying insects are always outside, we can't stay in Jiaotai Hall forever."

"Rest assured, Your Majesty." Wang Zhongyi said, "This magical artifact is the clan's heirloom passed down through the Dongyun Race for generations. Sadly, over time it has long decayed beyond repair."

"These flying insects can only last for the time it takes to burn an incense stick..."

With Wang Zhongyi's explanation, the surrounding guards and little eunuchs all stared in shock at the dozen or so flying insects slaughtering outside.

These were items of the Immortal Family, legendary treasures.

Unexpectedly, they could witness them too!

Emperor Zhengyong trembled as he spoke, "If only I could cultivate, it would be great..."

Wang Zhongyi smiled wryly, "Your Majesty... even the late Emperor sought traces of immortal cultivation. Not to mention the late Emperor, over twenty of our ancestors from the Great Yu Dynasty also sought it. But alas..."

"This land is a 'Spiritless Land' in the words of cultivators, completely incapable of supporting immortal cultivation!"

"Spiritless Land..."

In the corner of Jiaotai Hall, Zheng Yi murmured.

What is a Spiritless Land?

No spiritual qi?

Or...?

At that moment, the slaughter outside Jiaotai Hall turned again.

"Ha!"

"Tier One Demon Insect Red Spirit Mosquito!"

"And the Insect Armor Incarnation Technique of the Mayfly Sect!"

Fire Spirit's voice came again, "Ha ha ha... It seems today is my fortunate encounter!"

"Boom!"

A dull loud noise suddenly sounded, the ground began to shake, even the entire Jiaotai Hall trembled unceasingly.

"What's happening?"

"An earthquake?"

"Run quickly!"

"It's not good! It's that Immortal, he's..."

"Boom!"

A loud noise sounded, as the doors of Jiaotai Hall were blasted open, massive waves of air and flames surged in, instantly burning several people to death.

The entire Jiaotai Hall also quickly collapsed under the attack of this wave of flames.

"Your Majesty! Hurry!"

Wang Zhongyi grabbed Emperor Zhengyong and quickly retreated, whereas other little eunuchs weren't as fortunate, being either burned to death by the incoming flames or crushed by collapsing wooden beams and giant stones.

Zheng Yi also started running as soon as the firestorm wolf attacked.

Though he hasn't practiced any lightweight technique, being a First-grade Expert, he was not slow in fleeing.

"Boom!"

Another pile of giant stones collapsed, and he quickly turned to dodge it.

"Run!"

"We can't stay here; that cultivator's gone mad and even Xu Mujun can't stop him. We can't lose our lives over a small matter here..."

Jiaotai Hall finally collapsed completely, and at the critical moment, he took a deep breath and charged out of the falling debris's range.

But sensing danger, he immediately flipped back to the side of the Jiaotai Hall ruins.

"Whoosh...!"

Sure enough, as soon as he hid, a shadow flew past from the high skies.

That cultivator!

He was being chased by several Red Spirit Mosquitoes, while a golden bell-shaped glimmer on him was vibrating wildly, as if it could disperse at any moment.

Xu Mujun was nowhere to be seen, perhaps killed or perhaps also attacked by the Red Spirit Mosquitoes.

"Emperor of Great Yu! Where do you think you're going...!"

Fire Spirit shouted angrily, waving his hand as a flying sword shot out, aiming towards another direction.

Over there, Wang Zhongyi was frantically escorting Emperor Zhengyong along with several Shadow Guards.

"Your Majesty! Quick, go!"

Wang Zhongyi shouted angrily, then flipped around, disregarding his own safety and charged at Fire Spirit.

But with a casual flick of the hand, Fire Spirit pierced his chest with the flying sword, and his body crashed hard onto the ground.

Wang Zhongyi is dead?

Did he really die so easily?

Zheng Yi's eyes were wide in disbelief; this old eunuch who controlled him for over a year just died like that?

"Whoosh...!"

Fire Spirit prepared to strike again to kill Emperor Zhengyong, when suddenly, from afar, an arrow shot fiercely into Fire Spirit's body.

"Bang!"

The arrow collided with the golden bell shield, causing the shield to tremble violently, while the arrow exploded with a roar.

"Who?!"

He whipped around quickly to see a person holding a longbow standing on the distant palace wall—who else could it be but Xu Mujun?

"Looking for death!"

Fire Spirit gritted his teeth, flicked his hand, and the flying sword shot towards Xu Mujun.

Meanwhile, his other hand flicked towards the ground, unleashing a fiery snake that rushed to Emperor Zhengyong's fleeing location, exploding with a bang!

"Whoosh!"

"Whoosh whoosh!!"

"Whoosh whoosh whoosh!!!"

Suddenly, arrows rained down from afar, covering the area within a hundred-meter radius around Fire Spirit.

Behind Xu Mujun appeared a squad of fully armed soldiers, with dragon patterns painted on their armor.

Dragon-soaring Army!

Originally stationed at Datong Prefecture, the Dragon-soaring Army secretly appeared inside the Imperial Palace.

"Fire!"

"Whoosh...!"

Xu Mujun commanded, and another rain of arrows shot forth, forcing Fire Spirit to retreat continuously and causing his flying sword to wobble under the assault.

Xu Mujun himself leapt up, arms slicing horizontally, he concentrated all his inner strength, and slapped the flying sword hard.

"Buzz...!"

A strange buzzing sound echoed, the flying sword was severely damaged, and Fire Spirit, connected with it, spat out a mouthful of blood.

"You mortals...all must die!!!"

"Boom!"

Fire Spirit shouted furiously, grabbing several talismans and with a fierce wave towards the sky, launched them savagely at Xu Mujun.

Once Fire Spirit left Jiaotai Hall, Zheng Yi hurriedly sprang out, running towards the outside palace.

"Cultivators, these are cultivators...I must cultivate immortality in this life, as long as I can find..."

"Zheng, cough cough, Zheng Yi...come here!"

Suddenly, a coughing sound came, and Zheng Yi turned back sharply to see an old eunuch standing up shakily.

That figure...wasn't it Wang Zhongyi?

He didn't die!

Zheng Yi hesitated for a moment, but walked over.

"Eunuch Wang, are you okay?"

"Cough cough...won't die!"

Wang Zhongyi coughed dryly, with a peculiar gleam in his eyes: "Come over here, follow me to save His Majesty!"

"You'll be rewarded for your service, I'll plead with His Majesty to free you from the palace and reward you with ten thousand gold!"

"Release me from the palace?"

Zheng Yi's heart moved, and joy spread across his face hurriedly.

"Thank you, Eunuch Wang! Thank you, Your Majesty! This humble servant will go now..."

Excitedly, he headed in the direction where Emperor Zhengyong just got attacked, and Wang Zhongyi stepped aside.

As their figures crossed each other, they struck almost simultaneously!
