Chapter 4 - THE DISTANCE

When Blossom's ex showed up in her DMs, I told myself not to panic. "Relax, Eva. She's with you now. She chose you."

But even as I repeated that in my head, my stomach twisted.

Because I noticed it. The shift.

Blossom didn't vanish on me, she never ghosted, she never ignored. She still replied. But it wasn't the same.

The messages got shorter.

The calls got fewer.

Her laughter felt… different.

It was like she was still there, but not really there.

That's when I started running to Dara.

• "Dara, she doesn't call me the way she used to."

• "Her replies are slower now, I swear she's losing interest."

• "Oh my God, she said she was busy… am I boring now?"

I'd bombard Dara with texts at every hour of the day.

And Dara, sweet Dara, always said the same thing:

"Eva, you're overthinking. Relax."

(Dara's Commentary)

Let me defend myself here. Eva has a talent for turning one delayed reply into a full Nollywood script. Blossom would say, "I'm in class, talk later," and Eva would already be crying, planning the funeral of their relationship. So of course, I told her to calm down. How was I supposed to know the Titanic was actually sinking?

....

But deep down, I knew I wasn't overthinking. I felt it in the way she texted. In the way her "good morning " slowly turned into just "gm."

Little by little, Blossom was slipping away from me. And no matter how tightly I held on, I couldn't stop it.

Then came that night.

I was on my bed, waiting for her call. Instead, a message came through:

"Eva, we need to talk."

My chest clenched instantly. Because nothing good ever starts with those words.

I typed back: "Okay, about what?"

There was a pause. Then it came.

"I think… we should end things."

The ground dropped under me. My fingers shook. My heart thudded so loud I could barely breathe.

"Why?" I whispered into the dark, even though she couldn't hear me.

She didn't give a reason

I called Dara immediately, my voice trembling, my tears unstoppable.

"Dara… she left me. She left me."

(Dara's Commentary)

That night, I'll never forget. Eva's cry wasn't ordinary heartbreak cry, it was the cry of someone who gave more than they planned to, only to be dropped anyway. And me? I felt useless. All I could do was stay on the phone, listen to her sob, and remind her that she wasn't alone.

And just like that… the player became the heartbreakee.

And my friend Eva was shattered.
