Chapter 187 - Yamato Nadeshiko

Toneri's life in Konoha proved to be remarkably peaceful. Contrary to Shinichi's initial fears, Toneri didn't face any bullying or prejudice in the younger classes.

Handsome, talented, and backed by the prestige of the Hyuga clan, he was a student few dared to cross. Moreover, being three or four years older and significantly taller than his classmates gave him a natural aura of authority.

Mizuki, the Academy instructor assigned as Toneri's homeroom teacher, took an exceptional interest in him.

He frequently approached Toneri with a friendly smile, offering constant encouragement and care. For a boy who had grown up in total isolation, this sudden warmth—even if it came from a man like Mizuki—made Toneri feel truly welcomed.

Driven by a fierce desire to catch up, Toneri's integration into village life was rapid. In just two months, he successfully skipped grades, moving into a more age-appropriate level.

His innate intelligence and the maturity of his age made him a fast learner. He wasted no time, studying diligently at school and continuing his education at home.

Hanako, though only his foster mother, dedicated her spare time to tutoring him. As the wife of the Clan Head, she understood that fostering unity and talent within the family was the key to the Hyuga's prosperity. Her grace and wisdom only deepened the bond between Toneri and his new family.

The Weight of Leadership

As the New Year approached, the festive atmosphere in Konoha intensified. The Hyuga clan began massive preparations for the holidays and the associated ancestral rites. During this time, Shinichi found himself with less time to mentor Toneri.

Having been officially recognized as the heir, Shinichi was now being thrust into the administrative duties of the clan. Hiashi wanted him to adapt to the responsibilities of a Clan Head early.

Furthermore, with Shinichi's sixteenth birthday approaching, the clan was buzzing with anticipation. The hottest topic of conversation among the clansmen was a simple but heavy question: Which daughter would be chosen to stand by the future Clan Head's side?

The gossip wasn't contained within the compound. News of the Hyuga heir's "bride selection" leaked into the village, making Shinichi the subject of endless tea-time chatter among the citizens.

Whenever he walked through the streets, he was met with knowing smiles and "congratulatory" glances that made him deeply uncomfortable.

On the day of the New Year banquet, the atmosphere was jubilant. Representatives from various Branch families gathered at the main house.

Hiashi, usually stern and stoic, let his guard down. After a few drinks, he walked through the tables with his arm around his brother Hizashi, sharing laughs and toasting with the elders.

Hiashi felt a profound sense of peace. With Shinichi ready to take over, the heavy burden of the clan was finally lifting.

He had already decided that once Shinichi married and came of age, he would retire to the second line of leadership. He looked forward to spending more time with Hanabi and, perhaps, in the future, even playing with his grandchildren.

From Shadows to the Stage

Starting from the first week of the year, Hiashi took Shinichi to visit the clan's close allies and prominent political figures in the village. This was Shinichi's formal debut. He was no longer just a powerful shadow in the background; he was officially moving to the front of the stage.

While Shinichi didn't enjoy the political maneuvering, he recognized its necessity for the clan's future. He made sure to visit his own teachers and friends personally, showing that despite his rising status, he hadn't forgotten his roots.

Everyone in Konoha could feel the wind shifting. A new generation was rising to power within the Hyuga, and the village was watching closely to see how this would change the political landscape of the Land of Fire.

But for the Hyuga clan, the true climax was yet to come: Shinichi's birthday banquet.

The "Ideal" Women

On the morning of his birthday, Shinichi was awakened early by his mother. Hanako had personally tailored a new set of formal robes for him. She meticulously adjusted every fold, ensuring he looked every bit the noble lord, before finally allowing him to leave.

The evening banquet was smaller than the New Year's celebration. Only the Branch families whose daughters had been shortlisted were invited to the event.

These girls had been handpicked by Hanako herself. Each one was a paragon of beauty, bloodline, and intellect.

There were six girls in total: three were sixteen-year-olds like Shinichi, and three were around eighteen. Hanako had disqualified any girl younger than Shinichi, believing that an older wife would be better suited to support him.

Shinichi observed them throughout the meal. They were perfect—modeled after the traditional Yamato Nadeshiko. They were gentle, dignified, and possessed impeccable manners.

However, Shinichi felt a nagging sense of disappointment. Looking at them, he couldn't see their true personalities.

The strict clan traditions had polished away their edges, turning them into "reproductions" of the same ideal mold. To him, they felt like souls trapped in white marble.

Must I choose my wife from this list? Shinichi wondered, a trace of hesitation flickering in his eyes.

He was willing to sacrifice for the clan. He had expected to marry someone he might not love, and he was okay with that price. But he didn't want to live with a "blank slate." He wanted a partner with a vivid, living soul.

The Breaking Point

As the elders chatted and the atmosphere remained politely stifled, one girl suddenly stood up. Her name was Hyuga Yui. She was strikingly beautiful with sharp, clear eyes, but at this moment, her brow was furrowed in frustration.

The table fell silent. Her mother, sitting beside her, turned pale and frantically tugged at her sleeve. "Yui? What are you doing? Sit down, it's rude!"

"Why should I stay seated?" Yui said, her voice cutting through the room. She brushed her mother's hand away and looked directly at Shinichi. "He isn't even here in spirit. Why are we sitting here wasting our time?"

Hanako's eyes narrowed slightly. "Miss Yui? What exactly do you mean by that?"

"I mean exactly what I said," Yui replied, her gaze never wavering from Shinichi. "I'm talking about your son. I can see it in his eyes—he isn't doing this of his own will.

Since he has no sincere desire to find a partner for life, I see no reason to sit here and perform like an ornament. I'm leaving."

Shinichi snapped out of his trance, his gaze darkening. As she turned to walk away, he spoke up, his voice calm but resonant.

"I'm not here of my own will... but what about you? Are you here because you want to be?"

Yui stopped in her tracks. She turned back slowly, meeting his eyes with a fierce determination.

"Yes. I came here of my own will. I've heard the stories of your strength and your talent. As a Hyuga, I've long admired someone like you—not just for your power, but because I heard that even though you were named heir, you never once used the Caged Bird Seal against the Branch family.

I admired the man I thought was strong and confident."

She paused, her expression turning into one of pity. "But I've changed my mind. Perhaps my 'filter' was too thick. Standing here now, you look like nothing more than a spineless wretch who can't even make up his own mind."

Without waiting for a response, Yui turned and walked out of the hall, ignoring the frantic calls of her parents.

Her father stood up, bowing repeatedly to Hiashi and Shinichi. "Lord Hiashi, Lady Hanako, Lord Shinichi... I am so sorry! I will discipline her when we get home! This is... this is inexcusable!"

The family hurried after their daughter, leaving the banquet in a state of stunned silence.

Shinichi watched the doorway where she had vanished, a strange realization dawning on him. He had assumed these "Yamato Nadeshikos" were blank slates, but that was just his own stereotype. He realized he didn't know them at all.
