Chapter 257 - James T. Kirk

In the tense standoff, the middle-aged man leading the group sharply eyed the Maine's crew's advanced cybernetic enhancements and heavy weaponry, which were far beyond the current era.

When his gaze fell upon the plasma cannon in Rebecca's hand, which was humming with a low charge, and the clearly extraordinary incendiary weapon on Maine's left arm, his pupils involuntarily contracted.

His gun-wielding hand remained steady, but the muzzle had subtly shifted a few degrees, no longer pointing directly at the target.

As an experienced Commander, he clearly understood the extreme danger of engaging such a heavily armed crew in this confined space.

"I am James T. Kirk, Captain of the Federation Starfleet," he stated his identity in a deep voice, which echoed through the cave, deliberately emphasizing the words "Starfleet" and "Captain": "This is a vital scientific outpost under Federation jurisdiction. Your sudden intrusion has gravely violated Federation law and is currently interfering with a critical military operation."

His words carried the inherent authority of a military man, but a careful listen would reveal the caution contained within them.

In a situation where they were clearly at a firepower disadvantage, he chose to use his identity and the massive organization behind him to establish deterrence, attempting to regain the upper hand in terms of presence.

His sharp eyes were fixed on Maine, while also quickly assessing everyone's reactions, looking for any signs that might de-escalate the situation.

Valerie keenly caught this opportunity for dialogue.

She stepped half a pace forward, simultaneously using a subtle gesture to signal her teammates to remain vigilant but not to act rashly.

She responded in a clear and calm tone, deliberately adopting a formal phrasing similar to his: "Captain Kirk. I am Valerie, from the 'Mechanicus'' interdimensional exploration team." Her voice spread steadily through the cave, "We were conducting a routine dimensional jump survey mission, but an unexpected coordinate deviation occurred during the teleportation process, causing us to accidentally arrive here."

She paused briefly, allowing the information to be fully received, then continued: "We deeply apologize for inadvertently entering your facility. This was entirely an accident."

She skillfully emphasized the two key pieces of information: "interdimensional exploration" and "Mechanicus."

Given that the other party clearly represented a large organization, hinting that her side also had a mysterious entity behind it that possessed advanced technology beyond the norm, especially with their recently demonstrated interdimensional teleportation capability, was undoubtedly the best strategy to keep the other party cautious.

Captain Kirk's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly, clearly having keenly caught the astonishing word "interdimensional."

His gaze instinctively turned to the stern-faced female officer beside him, who bore typical Vulcan features.

Saavik immediately understood, quickly took out her tricorder, and began scanning. The instrument emitted a regular hum, and the data flickering on the screen seemed to be verifying some anomalous spatial readings.

Dr. Carol, standing nearby, heard the word "interdimensional" and could barely hide her surprise; as a scientist, she understood the implications of the word "interdimensional" even more.

"Interdimensional exploration?" Kirk repeated, his tone a mix of surprise and doubt.

He pondered for a moment, his sharp gaze quickly sweeping over Maine's crew's futuristic equipment.

This group of people was not only well-equipped, but the professionalism they exuded in their actions also showed that they were well-trained.

More importantly, the spatial teleportation technology they possessed clearly exceeded the Federation' current technological level.

At this critical juncture of pursuing Khan, rashly making an enemy of such a force possessing unknown technology was clearly not a wise move.

Kirk quickly weighed the pros and cons in his mind, ultimately deciding to reveal some information to test the other party's stance, while also leaving room for possible cooperation.

"We are pursuing an extremely dangerous fugitive," Kirk said in a deep voice, "named Khan Noonien Singh. He is a genetically engineered human from the late 20th century who once ruled parts of Earth.

Not long ago, he attacked our facility and seized a starship. Now we must depart immediately to continue the pursuit."

He gestured to his companions beside him: "This is Dr. McCoy, Science Officer Ms. Saavik, and Dr. Carol and her son David."

Dr. McCoy, introduced, muttered under his breath, "Always new trouble," while Saavik maintained her characteristic calm expression, observing the other party intently.

Dr. Carol and young David could not hide their nervousness, their eyes occasionally falling on Maine's crew's intimidating cybernetic enhancements and heavy weaponry.

Valerie keenly caught the keyword "genetically engineered human"; as a former Arasaka Corporation agent, she immediately realized the immense value this might hold.

She calmly noted this information, preparing to report it to Osiris later.

Seeing this, Maine responded in his usual concise style: "Maine, team leader. These are my crew members; we are hired to perform exploration missions."

He deliberately maintained the mysterious aura typical of mercenaries, not revealing more details.

Valerie keenly seized this crucial moment, timely reclaiming the lead in the conversation.

She maintained a composed demeanor, her voice steady and clear: "We fully understand the urgency of your mission, Captain. Our primary objective is also to assess the current dimensional environment and safely return to base."

She paused briefly, allowing the weight of her words to fully sink in, "In this situation, perhaps we can avoid unnecessary conflict? As far as I know, the 'Mechanicus' has always been open to establishing contact with orderly alien civilizations."

She once again skillfully mentioned the title "Mechanicus," while also implying that it might represent a larger sphere of influence.

This statement successfully transformed them from mere "illegal intruders" into "potential official contact subjects," effectively changing Captain Kirk's assessment of the situation.

Kirk's eyes flickered slightly, clearly weighing the stakes.

As an experienced Commander, he clearly realized that the consequences of detaining or attacking envoys representing an unknown force capable of interdimensional travel could be immeasurable.

After all, no one knew if the force behind them would deploy more power if they failed to return successfully.

In the cave, the originally tense and confrontational atmosphere had not completely dissipated, but the overt hostility had clearly softened.

Instead, there was a subtle state of mutual probing, with both sides cautiously assessing the other's strength and intentions.

On the brink of this potential conflict, Valerie, with her skilled diplomatic maneuvering, successfully steered the situation in a direction that, while uncertain, was at least non-hostile.
