"Marcus, I don't like that James is making too many calls. We all need to lie low at this time." Dmitri said, looking worried.
"James is running the company," Marcus said, but doubt crept into his voice. "That requires constant communication with department heads, the board, and major clients."
"I know," Dmitri said, and his tone was carefully neutral. "I'm just saying we should be careful and verify everything. Trust but verify, as the old saying goes."
Marcus understood what Dmitri wasn't saying directly. Even though James had been cleared by the investigation, paranoia was not only justified but necessary right now when the mastermind is using people around them.
They'd all been catastrophically wrong before about who to trust.
Viktor's computer beeped loudly, breaking the tension. "I've got something here. A decrypted email from exactly three months ago. Instructions about accelerating the timeline for something the sender calls the final acquisition."
