Chapter 25 - 3x5: Unexpected Guests

The work is finally done. Maya and Hexa finished gathering food. Maya walked back to town, sweat glistering ln her forehead. This job sure was physical, but rewarding. She liked it much more than serving in the army of the queen that didn't treat her like a human being should be treated. Well, the job itsself wasn't that bad. She enjoyed combat, and still trained on a target after escaping.

Now she went to her backyard, taking out her sword and skillfully striked the wooden training dummy. As she continued, her eyes darted to the path that goes next to her house. Another trader.. Or maybe not? This one's posture was better than any other normal wanderkng trader's. Maya had last seen such in the army. She also noticed how he was watching people with those calculating eyes. No trader needs to observe like that.

But the last drop was when Maya saw a gun halfway hidden under the trader's jacket. With widening eyes, she set down the sword and ran to town, trying to find Hexa with her gaze. She had to find her and leave this island. It was the only way they could survive. Someone was pointing at Maya's direction, others were whispering, but no Hexa in sight. Why did she have to disappear right now out of all the times she could have? Maya thought as she scrambled through the crowd.

"Pink hair and skilled in combat. We found the target. Two outsiders will be captured," Maya heard one of the odd merchants saying.

As soon as Maya saw a glimple of purple hair, she ran to Hexa and pulled her aside from others.

"Quiet," she whispered she she brought Hexa back into their house.

Hexa had a confused look on her face. Before she could ask anything, Maya already gave the answer.

"The island is no longer safe. We need to get out of here before they find us," Maya told her.

"Shouldn't we confort them? Maybe we could kill them first if they try anything," Hexa said, giving a wild, almost childish idea.

"Hexa, they have guns. We'll both get captered, or worse: dead. We do not want to cause a scene. We want to stay alive," Maya told her, destroying the idea into pieces. Right now, she just wanted to shake some sense into Hexa. Safety wasn't easy to achieve, especially by fighting.

In Hexa's head, those words started a debate on whether she should agree to Maya's statement or begin performing violent acts. One voice, which felt like it came from right behind her, was shouting at her to punch Maya and kill the threat with her sword as she's trying to collect herself on the floor. But the other voice, belonging to Aatos, was telling her to escape. She was being torn apart, and couldn't help the tears building up in her eyes.

Maya immediadly noticed the odd behavior. She saw how much Hexa was hurting, but didn't know why. The pain was raw in her eyes.

"It's alright. We'll be safe," Maya told Hexa, trying to comfort her as much as she could. She didn't promise anything. She couldn't. She was afraid she would have to break it soon. She feared many things, but maybe fear of the dark, spiders or heights couldn't beat the fear of failure. It was something she has had since she was little.

Hexa suddenly stopped crying like the tears hit a wall. She just stood there emotionlessly. "Let's go," she finally said. It seems, she has decided.

Maya took the bag she had never unpacked, containing long-lasting supplies. She then follows Hexa out of the house. They snuck out; not by the door, but window. They crouched, trying to draw as little attention as possible as they managed to get their way out of town.

When they found their way to the dock, Maya noticed something really wrong. "Fuck. They stole our boat," she says.

"Wasn't the boat itsself also stolen?" Hexa questions.

"Not necessarily," Maya said, blocking out the question.

One of the traders was waiting at the dock like they knew they were going to come there. If this was all a trap, the two would be dead meat. But it was only a matter of time to find out if they could actually make it out without their boat.
