Chapter 1 - Joan Apocalypse

"Ugh.."

A young man groans as he lies sprawled on the rocky ground.

'What happened to me?'

He sat up his fluttering eyelids open slowly, revealing his pale eyes as he surveyed his surroundings.

A moment later, a strange light seemed to pass in them, he looked down examining his own body. His eyes widen and his expression pale in shock.

The young man look to be in his teens; about 15-16 years of age, he had a shoulder length pale white hair. His body was thin and only wore torn messy clothes.

" Huh? Do -don't tell me I have…"

He immediately stood up, his wobbling legs almost gave up and he almost trip over but he control himself with difficulty using his hands as a support. A slight frown was on his forehead from what seemed like a headache, but the existment deep inside his eyes was unmistakable.

"Transmigrated?! No way…" flabbergasted, his body shook from the uncontrolled emotions.

'So those transmigrations in those degenerate novels actually work?!'

Seeing his new body, he was still having trouble believing the circumstance he was currently in besides having years of memories flooding into his head like unrelenting tides. Just moment ago before he open his eye, he had be in his most terrifying moment of his life being chased by big black dogs back on earth.

"So, this means I must have died back on earth. Those bastard dogs! Don't let me see your kind again or else…" he wasn't done venting his anger and frustration, but his cursing came to an abrupt end.

"Huh..?"

At this point, he had almost finished assimilating all the memories of the body. The body belongs to a young man named Joan, who will turn 16 tomorrow, and came from a poor but loving family. But that wasn't what shocked him, but rather remembering a critical information that made his body shudder.

"If I'm getting the right memory. Then he died in this underground tunnel while at work, if I'm not mistaken… before he lost his vision, th-there was a giant dog-like monster here right?!!"

Upon realizing his situation, he looked at the half-collapsed dark tunnel ahead.

'F*ck– run!'

Scared out of his wits, Joan turned tail and ran to the path leading to the entrance of the tunnel. Although he was still weak and unfamiliar with his new body, making movement difficult but he persisted because the thought of dying again frightened him. He path was a lot more broken and messy in his memory.

"This sucks, it seems the tunnel experience some disaster" He felt pain from the various brushes and cuts made by sharp rocks. But the bright side wasn that there wasn't any sign of the monster dog and he was almost out of the tunnel.

"Hey I think I heard a someone footsteps!"

Just some distance away, few men dressed in working clothes holding burning torches were all looking into the deeper region.

"Don't think, there is indeed a footsteps; he must be a survaviour hurry lets rescue him!"

Joan hearing people voices some distance away was very happy.

I'm saved!

But at the same time he was nervous, afterall he was not the same person that entered the tunnel.

'I should be fine since I have all his memery now.' Swallowing tensely, he readied himself and shouted,

"Please help! I am down here!"

The men who were trying desperated to clear all many rubble to make a clear path were ecstatic. It was a human! They had been unsure weather the foot sounds they heard was a monster or human.

"Kid, we are coming don't worry!"

Joan didn't need to wait long. By now the worker appeared with fire torch; illuminating his face and his injury ridden body.

"Little Joan! You survived?!"

A middle age man with dusty short hair and tired eyes recognized Joan and exclaim in surprised.

Joan's heartbeats accelerated.

"Sir supervisor!" he recognised the man, he was the supervisor and responsible for regestering they people who enter the tunnel and pay according to the raw iron they bought out with them.

The supervisor with the few other came and examined his injuries, they released visible sighs in relif.

Another man, who was also fimiliar with him couldn't help commenting:

"You sure are lucky; almost too lucky, those injuries could be recoverd by the Teir-0 Healing Paste the church provide. If only you had seen the other who made it back from this disaster… " He didn't continue and fell silent.

'Lucky? I was dead!' Joan thought.

"I am relived that uncles are alright as well, but what actually happen for the tunnel to collapse this much?"

Joan was confused of what happened outside while he was 'dead'.

The supervisor and the rest seems surprised when they heard him, they looked intently at him.

"Kid, you really didn't know?" the man spoke in surprise.

Joan frowned a little in thought, he did know what they were reffering to.

"I-I don't remember, I was unconscious. I only woke up some time ago and made my way here."

They all showed a pity yet understanding expression upon hearing him.

Seeing Joan confusion, the supervisor spoke.

"The thing is, we don't know too much either. Just couple of hours ago a heavy earthquake shook the entire tunnel followed by a blinding light that spread everywhere."

The supervisor's tired eyes shook briefly as he said this. Not only him, but the rest of the people here were the same; they looked like some devotee.

"Light!?"

"Yes, light! It seems like the sunlight in the myth! It shone briefly from beyond the clouds everywhere!"

The supervisor and the other seemed to find it unbelievable by what they said, but it was the truth they saw with their own eyes, so they couldn't deny it.

"Sunlight…"

Although the word sounded to normal for Joan who crossed from modern earth but after receiving the memories of the previous Joan, he knew that 'sunlight' was in this world closed to something of a legend.

The place he had transmigrated in now was a world in an apocalypse or what remain after it. Different from the modern earth, the technology was primitive or degraded due to a disaster in the past, which left the world in a post-apocalyptic state.

Food was scarce and limited because of the infertile soil, but toxic plants and unusual flora thrive in this place.

The place he was in now was at one of the historic ruins within the Midnight Sun kingdom. The ruins run deep, but the outer area contains resources like raw iron or other fossils that could be exchanged for some money or food.

Truthfully, this wasn't a place where Joan was allowed to be. This place was only accessible to adults and a few special people. But Joan, who needed food, used the friendly relationship he had with the supervisor to come in here.

'Sigh, hell of a place I have transmigrated into, more importantly, I wouldn't get any money today.'

As Joan was lamenting, the supervisor and the other led Joan out of the tunnel.

Immediately, Joan's nose was hit by a warf scent of blood, he saw dead bodies on the ground with unimaginable injuries and severed limbs lined up. The sight made his stomach churn. He almost threw up on the spot, but held it in.

The few worker only look and said nothing. The supervisor spoke,

"Joan, go to the church hospital and get your wound treated. You can't also forget about coming here from tomorrow whether you awakening succed or not."

After saying, they went back inside to wait for other survivors… if there were any."

Joan had already paid his respect for the dead and moved away, heading to his home.

"Awakened!" he was excited.

Tomorrow he will turn 16, and it just also happens to be the day the kingdom and churches invite all youth between 16 to 20 to do a mass awakening ceremony!

Upon awakening, one will become a supernatural human, and they will receive fame and status. Even if you don't awaken, one can try again as long as their age doesn't exceed 20.

After walking down the hill, he saw a teleportation gate guarded by some armoured men, which made him happy. But he paused and thought there was something he had forgotten.

"How could I actually forget about this?!!" Joan's soft face twitch.

"Status!"

"The status screen. If the memory is not mistaken than only Awakmed shoud be able to call forth the screen. And why are everything x and i can only read my name and …. The Sun?"

Joan looked thoughtfully at the transparent screen he was too familiar with on earth, but seeing so result to his confusion he disniss the screen and head to the teleporter.

"Name?" one of the intimidating armour men asked.

"Joan Apocalypse."

The armour men posture shook upon hearing the name, he immediate the teleported and sended Joan on his way.
