Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Magic (2)

"Haha, I did it! Did you see that, Mother!?"

Outside the Blight manor, several books floated in the air, under the influence of a young boy with green hair.

The latter couldn't help but sketch a happy smile upon seeing his spell work perfectly.

'It only took a light explanation…' thought Gaius, as his mother observed the scene.

The woman with green hair and ice-blue eyes was Odalia Blight, who was teaching magic to Gaius.

The young boy was using telekinesis, which is one of the simplest spells in oracle magic.

Odalia sketched a smile, before stepping toward Gaius and caressing his hair.

"Well done, I'm truly surprised by your control over the magical organ inside you," she said calmly.

The magical organ, or more simply: the bile sac.

It is the main reason that separates magic users from ordinary creatures.

All witches and demons possess one, but normal animals, just like humans, lack it.

This supernatural organ is attached to the hearts of witches and has different internal structures that the AI has not yet been able to fully understand, due to insufficient information.

However, Gaius had managed to grasp the functioning of this supernatural part in his body.

'Theoretically, each substance contained in the bile sac is suited to a specific type of spell. For example: defense, attack, or support. However, the hardest part remains perceiving which one is necessary for a specific spell, then guiding it correctly,' thought Gaius, raising his hand to create another circle in the air.

Once the correct magical substance was selected in the bile sac, all that remained was to impose his will on reality and visualize the spell.

The AI could assist him in the visual aspect, but the will… remained Gaius's own.

"There… that's this warmth," he said to himself, feeling the sensation that the AI had helped him perceive.

Unlike the first time when Odalia had explained the method to him and he had simply reproduced his mother's spell, Gaius tried again this time without the help of the AI from his System.

Was it pride? No. The young magician simply refused to depend entirely on Athena's gift and her organization.

He wanted his own power.

Thus, he levitated other books without the AI's assistance.

"Perfect. You really have a talent for my magic," said Odalia, nodding, as a proud smile sketched itself on her face.

"Now, we'll try something else," she added before pulling out a crystal ball.

As a fan of the Fool, Gaius's eyes began to shine upon seeing the object indispensable to divinatory arts.

A few days had passed since the start of Odalia's teaching to Gaius.

During this lapse of time, Gaius had already surpassed the elements necessary for admission to Hexside High: knowing all the runes of the witches' alphabet and being able to cast three spells correctly.

Beyond this accomplishment, which Odalia deemed incredible due to her son's young age, Gaius had also learned something interesting thanks to the AI.

Magical compatibility.

The witches' magical organ does not create all the substances necessary for casting certain types of spells that other magical creatures can use. Thus, witches like Willow, who have shown weak ability in abomination magic, are not lazy. They are biologically unfit in that domain due to their innate condition.

Gaius had been wrong at the beginning of his magical learning. Witches are not totally negligent with magic, but it happens that the latter does not want them.

In Gaius's case, he seems devoid of aptitude in healing magic, Beast Keeping, plants, illusions, and construction.

On the other hand, he has demonstrated good compatibility with both of his parents' magics, as well as potions and bard magic.

A very high number of magics, according to the information he had read in the Blight house books.

Normally, a witch has high compatibility for two, or at most three, magics.

Beyond the number three, they are considered abnormal, like Eda Clawthorne.

The Owl Lady can use construction magic, oracles, plants, bards, and potions.

Is she compatible with all that? Gaius doesn't know, but she has demonstrated all these magics in his memories.

According to Gaius's understanding, the Coven system was able to establish itself thanks to Belos's cunning, but also because of this logic.

The worse a witch's compatibility with a type of magic, the harder it is for her to progress in that path.

Of course, there are also cases of total incapacity to use a specific system.

Gaius concluded mentally, after closing a book due to the dense forest.

He was currently walking with his mother in the woods.

For what reason? She wanted to teach him a more complex and practical spell.

Alador was against it at first, but Odalia judged that Gaius's talent was sufficient and explained their son's progress to her husband.

Fortunately, that was enough to convince him.

"Today, in addition to manipulating pure spiritual energy, I'm going to teach you to use a crystal ball for something other than reading fragments of the future," she said with a strange smile.

Gaius had never seen his mother make such an expression, but he decided to follow her anyway.

It didn't take long before the duo reached an old ruined cemetery.

"Here, this place is far enough and has a good spiritual density," she said before her eyes shone with a violet glow.

A phenomenon that occurs when a witch suffers a mental shock or uses a huge amount of magical energy.

Finally, Gaius understood why they had gone so far.

"Ah… k-kill…"

"I-I'm hungry…"

"Ma… mama…"

Several strange noises and groans began to spread around him before Odalia stopped.

She seemed slightly out of breath, but satisfied with the result above her and Gaius.

Several ghosts.

"As a user of oracle magic, you must be able to use the help of captured spectral entities… Gaius? Are you listening to me?" asked Odalia in a confused tone, for she knew that this kind of magic was still a bit too advanced for Gaius.

But she observed an unexpected reaction in her eldest son.

A childish side, which contrasted strongly with his usual maturity on the pedagogical level.

"… Too cool!"

After hearing these words, Odalia decided to postpone the lesson on sealing specters and creating a familiar.

Gaius tried to convince her, but failed miserably. From that day on, he decided to avoid letting his immature side take over too often.
