When Wanda opened her eyes again, she was greeted by a pure white ceiling and a faint fragrance in the air. She felt her head was dizzy, as if it had been hit hard with a hammer.
My body was so weak that even lifting a finger was difficult.
"Pietro..." She subconsciously called her brother's name.
"I'm here, Wanda." A familiar voice sounded beside her.
Wanda turned her head with difficulty and saw Pietro lying on another bed next to her.
He was also pale, but appeared to have regained consciousness.
"Where are we?" Wanda struggled to sit up.
"Don't move." Pietro held her down.
"We, it seems, are at Stark's house."
There was a hint of uncertainty and confusion in his tone.
Just then, the door of the ward was pushed open.
Tony walked in slowly, carrying a tray.
He was dressed in casual clothes and had a confident smile on his face.
"Oh, look, our little birds are finally awake."
He placed the tray on the bedside table. On it were two cups of hot milk and some unappetizing-looking nutritional biscuits.
"How do you feel? Did you sleep well?" he asked in the tone of an elder caring for the younger.
"Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? For example, when you see my handsome face, does your heart beat faster and your breathing become difficult because of jealousy?"
Wanda and Pietro both looked at him warily, without saying a word.
They quietly felt the power in their bodies, but were horrified to find that the power that they once took pride in seemed to be dormant at this moment and could not be mobilized at all.
"Don't waste your energy." A lazy voice came from the door.
Henry leaned against the door frame, his hands in his pockets, and looked at them leisurely.
"That little thing around your neck is my brother's latest invention." He pointed to the collar around their necks.
"Its function is complex. Simply put, it's a calming ring. As soon as you have any inappropriate thoughts in your mind, such as wanting to blow this place up or turn the two of us into kebabs, it will immediately make you experience what it's like to be paralysed and unable to take care of yourself."
"You guys..." Pietro's face flushed crimson instantly. He struggled to sit up, but found that he had no strength left.
"What do you want to do?!"
"What?" Tony shrugged exaggeratedly when he heard that.
"Of course I'll take you in."
He pulled over a chair and sat down in front of the two beds with his arms and legs stretched out.
"Listen, kids." He put away his cynical expression and became serious for once.
"I know you hate me and Stark. I also know your past and what you have been through. I am sorry about that. This is the first time that I, Tony, have said the word sorry to someone."
Wanda and Pietro were stunned. They had never expected that this man, who was like a devil in their hearts, would actually apologize to them.
"But," Tony changed the subject.
"Sorry doesn't mean I owe you anything. It also doesn't mean you can justifiably put all the blame on me." He stood up and paced around the room.
"Your home was destroyed by Stark Industries' shells, that's true. But the ones who really pointed the shells at you were those damn terrorists. I'm sorry that your parents died in the war. But the ones who provoked the war were Hydra, Strucker, and those bastard s hiding in the shadows, trying to control the world."
"You directed your hatred towards me because I was the most conspicuous target. This is normal, and I understand. It's painful to admit that you've been deceived and used as a tool for revenge. In comparison, it's much easier to find a specific target to hate."
"But now." He stopped, turned around, and looked down at them.
"I'm putting the choice back in your hands."
"You can continue to hate me, and continue to treat sworn enemies. Then, when you are well again, I will send you to wherever you want to go, and from then on, we will owe each other nothing."
"Or..." He paused and smiled faintly.
"You can stay and see for yourself whether we are the devils you imagine us to be. And see for yourself what we are really doing. We will eradicate Hydra from this earth. We will make those who are truly responsible for your tragedy pay the price."
"I have already pointed out the way for you."
After he finished speaking, he stopped looking at them and walked straight towards the door.
"How you choose is your own business."
"Oh, by the way." When he reached the door, he turned back and pointed to the milk and biscuits on the bedside.
"This is your breakfast. Don't say I'm mistreating you. It may not taste great, but at least it fills your stomach."
After saying that, he and Henry turned and left the ward, leaving Wanda and Pietro looking at each other in the room, with only complexity and confusion on their faces.
The door closed silently behind them, completely isolating the depressing atmosphere in the ward.
Tony let out a long sigh, and his serious expression instantly collapsed, replaced by a sense of relief.
He tugged at his collar as if he had just been in a tough battle.
"Fuck." He leaned against the corridor wall and complained weakly.
"I swear, this is more exhausting than fighting those old fogies in Congress. I'd rather arm wrestle the Hulk all day than play this damn game again. A spiritual mentor role-playing game."
Henry leaned against the opposite wall, his hands in his pockets, and watched him leisurely, possessed by his acting spirit.
"Oh, really?" He raised his eyebrows, his tone teasing.
"Why did you seem to be enjoying yourself just now? Pacing around, lecturing, and looking up at the ceiling at a 45-degree angle. With those gestures and expressions, someone who didn't know you would think you were some Broadway actor whose career got delayed."
"That's called creating an atmosphere! It's to increase the persuasiveness and pressure of my words! Do you understand?" Tony immediately retorted. He straightened up and adjusted his casual clothes.
"To deal with these rebellious adolescent boys and girls, you have to overwhelm them with your power and make them realize who is the dominant one in this family... uh, on this planet."
"So, your approach is to give them awful cookies and cheap hot milk?" Henry pointed out sharply.
"I have to say, your hospitality remains as peculiar as ever. I suppose your next move is to give each of them a video game console and let them play games in their rooms all night to soften their hatred."
"That's a good backup plan!" Tony nodded seriously, and then the two of them walked side by side towards the laboratory.
