Chapter 69 - Chapter 62: Selecting Personnel

Lynn paid no mind to these gazes.

He simply took a portion of black bread and stew, the same as everyone else.

Then, carrying his tray, he walked towards the table where Jon Snow was sitting.

Beside Jon were Gelan, Pypar, Sam, and a few other recruits.

Since Lynn helped them resolve their issues last time, their relationship had improved significantly, and they were now chatting animatedly.

It seemed Jon was doing quite well now.

At least among these recruits, he was doing well.

Seeing Lynn approach, they all instinctively stood up, their faces showing a hint of awkwardness and respect.

"Lord Lynn."

Gelan even used an honorific.

"Don't be nervous, sit down."

Lynn gestured for them to sit, and he himself sat down beside Jon.

The new longsword at his waist lightly clinked against the table leg as he sat, making a clear, crisp sound.

Everyone's eyes were drawn to the sword.

A black scabbard, silver trim, and... at the end of the hilt, a lifelike white wolf's head carved from weirwood.

The wolf's eyes were two blood-red garnets.

"This... this is..."

The eyes of the Night's Watch members widened.

They stared intently at the sword, their breathing becoming rapid.

They recognized this sword.

They had also seen Lord Commander Mormont wear it.

That was House Mormont's ancestral sword — longclaw!

Why... why was it here?

Why did it appear at Lynn's waist?

And, why had the bear's head on the hilt turned into a wolf's head?

All the Night's Watch members who knew this sword were stunned.

Bowen Marsh's mouth hung open, and he didn't even notice the bread in his hand falling into his soup.

And Alliser Thorne, the moment he saw that sword, his face instantly turned pale.

He abruptly stood up from his chair, pointing at Lynn and blurted out.

"longclaw!"

"House Mormont's Valyrian steel sword!"

"How did it get to you?!"

"You thief! You shameless scoundrel! You actually stole the Lord Commander's sword!"

Thorne's roar echoed in the silent dining hall.

Everyone was stunned by this sudden turn of events.

Stole a sword?

Lynn, stole the Lord Commander's ancestral sword?

How could this be?

Lynn looked up, calmly watching the frenzied Thorne, a hint of mockery on his lips.

He didn't speak.

Because he knew, he didn't need to explain at all.

Would a thief bring stolen goods out into the open?

Thorne also regretted his words after saying them.

Constant setbacks from Lynn had disfigured him.

This Thorne truly disliked him, like a persistent plaster, he couldn't shake him off no matter what he did.

Three times, but not a fourth.

Lynn began to ponder how to kill this troublemaker without being discovered.

It was difficult to achieve this in Castle Black.

A flash of inspiration suddenly crossed Lynn's mind.

He recalled the incident where he was attacked earlier.

That assassin was a very good breakthrough point.

Just as Lynn was deep in thought.

"Thorne!"

A loud and authoritative voice came from the dining hall entrance.

Jeor Mormont walked in, surrounded by quartermasters.

His gaze swept coldly across Thorne's face.

"I gave it to him."

"What?"

Thorne looked at Mormont in disbelief.

"Lord Commander, you... what did you say?"

"I said, longclaw was given to Lynn by me."

Mormont walked to Lynn's side and placed his hand heavily on his shoulder.

Then, he surveyed the entire hall and declared to everyone in an unchallengeable tone.

"Lynn saved my life, saved all of Castle Black."

"He proved his loyalty and courage through his actions."

"From today onwards, he is not only a benefactor of the Night's Watch, but also a warrior recognized by me, Jeor Mormont!"

"He is worthy of this sword!"

The entire dining hall was silent.

Everyone's minds buzzed from Lord Commander Mormont's words.

Giving a Valyrian steel sword, which had been passed down in the family for hundreds of years, to an outsider?

This... this was too... out of "order"...

One must know, Valyrian steel swords were the ancestral treasures of every family, usually held by the current head of the family.

It was not just a Valyrian steel sword; behind it were many heroic and moving stories, and its significance to the entire family was self-evident.

This was no longer a simple reward.

This was an acknowledgment!

It was even a trust!

This was almost equivalent to... Mormont considering Lynn his successor!

Everyone's gaze once again converged on Lynn.

Their eyes were filled with shock, confusion, and jealousy.

Jon Snow stared blankly at Lynn, then at the longclaw with the carved wolf's head at his waist.

There was envy, but even more, a sincere admiration.

And Alliser Thorne, as if all his strength had been drained, slumped back into his chair.

This time, he had truly shot himself in the foot.

Not only was Lynn fine, but he himself had gotten into trouble.

Ever since he met Lynn, he hadn't had a single thing go his way!

But the more frustrated he became, the stronger his hatred for Lynn grew.

Lunch ended in an eerie silence.

The Night's Watch members occasionally stole glances at Lynn.

But Lynn, acted as if nothing had happened.

He finished his black bread, drank his bowl of stew, and then calmly left the dining hall.

From today onwards, his position in Castle Black was completely solidified.

Except for that ignorant clown Thorne, no one dared to challenge him openly, and no one dared to speak ill of him behind his back.

In the afternoon, Lynn arrived at Castle Black's training ground.

As the newly appointed commander of the expeditionary force, Lynn needed to select fifty of the most elite Rangers from the Night's Watch.

This was the authority granted to him by Lord Commander Mormont.
