Chapter 4 - Episode 4: Unexpected Tragedy

Walking through the hospital halls with a sped up pace was none other than Dr. James Kryo. He thought to himself, "I need to get them out of here as fast as possible, unnoticed. These are good people and I… I knew Liam would be strong… but now I am sure that he is the answer the world will need. I have to conceal them. Liam needs all the time I can spare for him." James turned one last corner and dead ended into a door with a golden name plate that sat at head height. It read out in white letters, 'Dr. James Kryo, M.D.'.

He pulled out a set of keys that rang out like wind chimes as they banged and clanged against the innumerable amount of other keys on the key ring. James then found the specific key he was looking for with a speed that spoke volumes about how familiar he was with this process. After opening his office, James walked in and sat at his desk in front of his computer. For a moment, he just sat there with his index finger on the front of his chin and thumb underneath it. Visually, it was obvious that he was deep in thought, but only he knew just how deep those thoughts went.

James sat like this for around ten minutes and then grabbed the landline style phone on his desk and pressed a button that instantly connected him to the nurse's station. "Hello sir, this is Marisa, what do you need me to do for you?" a young woman answered that had red flowing hair that went down to the center of her back. James replied, "Hey there Marisa, I hope you are doing well today. I need you to get ahold of Stacy and send her to my office as soon as she can get here."

After a little bit of casual talk between colleagues, Marisa and James placed the phones back on the receivers. Immediately, Marisa went on a man hunt for Stacy just trying to track her down and finally, she ran across her tending to a little boy about the age of eight. It was obvious he had been in some type of incident that cause his foot to be injured. Stacy could be seen wrapping his foot in a cast and trying to settle him down a bit so he would hold still.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Marisa entered the room gracefully while giving the young man a smile. It automatically made the boy relax more so than before she entered. Little did he know, this was Marisa's ability, and was also part of the reason she chose healthcare. "Hey Stacy, Dr. Kryo sent me to grab you. He said he needs you in his office as soon as you can get there. If it will help you, I can take over here. It sounded pretty important for him to send me out like this."

Stacy nodded and thanked her as they swapped places. She looked at the little boy and said, "Alright now, be good for her, okay? You don't have to worry, you are in very capable hands!" She gave him one last smile and headed out of the room and straight up to Dr. Kryo's office. Due to how urgent Marisa sounded, she did a little bit of a speed walk through the halls.

Stacy arrived outside of the doctor's office and immediately knocked and waited for a sign to come in. She didn't have to wait long as Dr. Kryo opened the door himself and pulled the door out of Stacy's way insinuating that he wanted her to come inside. "Hey there Stacy, how is your day going so far? I hope all is well."

Stacy gave him a warm smile, "Hey Dr. James, my day is going pretty well so far, thanks for asking. How about yours?" Stacy knew that James was someone who didn't see himself as just their boss. He looked after them all as if they were his own. James replied while returning her smile with one of his own, "My day is going well. Would you like to sit down? I have some things that I want to discuss with you about the Gray family and their discharge."

Stacy knew that James came to her like this mostly when he needed something done that only she would be trusted with. "Sure thing, sir. I am all ears." she responded with a bit of excitement in her voice.

Meanwhile, in the Gray family's hospital room, they took the time to settle down with Liam. Barry said, "Hey Monica, I wanna see something really fast." He walked over to the light switch and flipped it into the off position. Liam's hair shined like a light in the darkness. On closer inspection, you could see an intense light penetrating the skin of his eyelids. If it was something someone just walked in on, it might be terrifying to witness.

Barry and Monica couldn't believe that the spectacle in front of them was their newborn son. "James told us not to stand out right? How in the heck are we gonna get him to blend in?" Barry asked, obviously a little worried. Monica said, "Hey turn the light on real quick for me." Barry did as he was instructed and the light in Liam's eyes were much less obvious. "As long as it's not dark when we leave, we can at least get him home without there being an issue." she added.

Seeing this, paired with his wife's words, made Barry feel quite a bit better about their situation. Next thing they knew, another 'KNOCK' was heard at their door. They turned to look and see if it was Dr. James Kryo yet again. However, that is not who they saw coming through the door. "Hey Mr. and Mrs. Gray, it's Stacy your nurse from earlier. Dr. James sent me here on special orders to help you all get discharged. I will personally be handling all of the steps to get you guys out of here. I don't want you to have to worry about a thing." she said with a calm and instructive tone.

"The doctor told me that I shouldn't try and stay in here too long, but he wants you guys to get your things packed up. We are aiming to get you out of here within the next thirty minutes." Stacy was trying to make sure they knew the doctor's intentions clearly. With that being said, Monica and Barry knew that since this had come from James, they knew exactly what this was. They thanked Stacy as she left and they started gathering their things. It didn't take them long, as they only brought the bare necessities. After about eight minutes, everything was packed and sitting next to their door.

No more than twenty minutes after that, Stacy came knocking once more, but this time she announced herself. "Yes Stacy, come in. Is everything ready for us to leave on your end?" The nurse confirmed Monica's question with a smile. Stacy said, "Dr. Kryo already had your car pulled around to the front. You guys must mean a lot to him for him to use his ability like that." With that, Stacy went and waited outside of the Gray family's room.

Barry and Monica both looked at each other and confirmed with each other that they were ready to move out. Gathering their things, Monica held baby Liam and wrapped him up so his hair couldn't be seen. Luckily each time Stacy came in before, Monica held him in a way that she couldn't see any part of the baby. They opened the door with all of their belongings in tow and Stacy lead the way out of the hospital.

Finally reaching the front doors of the hospital, Barry's SUV could be seen, as promised, waiting conveniently for them. He helped Monica get into the back seat while Stacy loaded the items they brought down with them. Monica and Barry thanked Stacy as Barry got in the driver's seat and Monica could be seen placing Liam in the car seat. Only for a split second, Stacy got a glimpse of Liam's face and thought, "That's an adorable baby!" Only a moment later, Liam happened to open his eyes and immediately close them, but it was enough time for Stacy to see the odd glow and color of his eyes.

Stacy could not believe her own eyes. Those eyes were like nothing she had ever seen. "Did they give birth to a god in baby form?" she thought to herself. "No don't be stupid! That's just not possible… it had to be the sun or something, right? Get yourself together Stacy, come on now." she thought again, reprimanding herself.

Barry started the vehicle and headed his little family off down the road. "I can't believe it Star! We are headed home with our baby boy!" Barry said as he started tearing up, yet again. Monica giggled, "Oh come on, you're such a softy, but I love you anyway handsome. We are so lucky to have the family we have. I will never take either of you for granted." This only made Barry break out into a heartfelt sob as he drove the Gray family home.

About thirty minutes into their drive, Monica and Barry on instinct looked at each other with worry. Barry pulled the car over as soon as possible because they felt their insides rattling once more. He got out of the car and ran around to the car door where Liam was located and he snatched the door open. Just as the door opened up fully, the same pulse of power that occurred in the hospital when James gave Liam the serum, burst out of Liam's body. This threw Barry about twenty five feet away and shoved Monica up against the car door. Barry laid on the ground for a moment trying to regain the breath that was just knocked out of him. Eventually, he stood up and walked back the car and made sure Liam was fine, which he was.

After checking on Liam, he looked over to Monica and noticed she was rubbing the back of her head and neck. "Are you okay Star? Did you hit your head or something?" Barry asked in concern. Monica just shook her head, also trying to regain her breath. They didn't know what normal was for their family at this point. No baby in existence ever showed powers and no kid ever did until they were ten years old. However, this made the second time the pulse erupted from their newborn. Barry and Monica were visibly worried. He tried brushing it off once more as he got back in the driver's seat and continued on the route home.

Roughly fifteen minutes later, the Gray family pulled into the parking garage of their apartment complex. Monica tasked herself with holding the baby and decided to task Barry with literally everything else. For the first round from the car to their apartment, Barry said that he just wanted to focus on getting Monica and the baby into their place. They were so happy walking up to the door, but as they did, they noticed a small package on the ground that was leaning on their door. Without thinking anything of it, Barry bent down and picked it up and read the sender label. 'To the Gray Family, from JK'.

Barry read the label out loud to Monica and asked, "JK… do you think… do you think it's from the doctor?" Monica hesitated, but replied, "I mean he did say we wouldn't see him again, not that we wouldn't hear from him again. This might be how we stay safe Barry. Open it and let's see what's inside."

Barry ripped open the top of the package and looked inside to see what it could possibly be. "It's a laptop… why would he send us a computer? Oh wait there's a note. Hold on let me grab it." Barry lifted the note out of the package and began reading the short message. "DO NOT GO INSIDE! Go back to your car and open the laptop! Do not act suspicious. From JK."

Without hesitation, the Gray family put their trust in believing the note was from the doctor. They made their way back to their car and got in without any problems. Once in, the laptop was opened and without having to hit the power button, a video started playing. "I'm sorry for being cryptic you guys." Dr. James Kryo could be seen on the screen and continued, "In order to keep you all safe from possible attacks in the future, I need to relocate you to a different place. I already have everything arranged for you. I am ensuring your survival so please don't fight the move."

Barry and Monica looked at each other saddened by what was being said. James explained onward, "I know you might be upset or unhappy with this; however, in time you will see it is for the best. I have already taken every single thing you guys have from inside of your apartment and moved them to the secret location. The address will be given at the end of this video. I will keep in touch with you all by using this laptop so make sure to keep it safe. You will have a great life, but don't forget, I stole from the King and now that threat will loom over all of our heads. I've already been keeping an eye on you guys and know that another pulsation of power busted out of Liam."

The couple were astonished by James's information gathering capabilities. Then they thought about it for a minute. "That only happened fifteen minutes before we got home… that means between then and when we saw the package, he had time to record, set all of this up and have it delivered here…" Monica said. They knew then that James had a lot of time to perfect working around the King.

James on the video continued, "I think the fact that he is having such a side effect, that nobody could have predicted, could be explained by something else. There is no proof, but if I'm correct in my theory, the world of ability users have gotten something wrong for the entire existence of abilities themselves. Currently, the scientific world knows that we are granted our abilities at the age of ten, and we accept this as fact. What if that's not true at all? What if the reason your son is having these episodes is because he already has an ability? My theory is that we are born with our abilities, but we just aren't able to tap into that power until we reach the age of ten for some odd reason. I believe that Liam has helped me uncover a truth that absolutely nobody could have guessed. Maybe, when we tested the cells to see which baby had the capability of getting a stronger ability, we weren't testing the capability at all. Maybe we were testing the actual ability…"

Barry and Monica already found themselves in a pattern. Every time Dr. James opened his mouth to tell them something, they tend to run silent with shock. However, his theory made sense, but does that mean that somehow Liam, with the help of the special serum, is capable of using his powers or even some of his powers now? If so how in the world would they be able to guarantee their own safety from their son even at his age? There were just so many unknown variables that, unfortunately, they would just have to live through to know about.

Eventually, the video ended and the address was given. Barry drove about two hours away from their apartment and arrived at a log cabin in the woods. There was no fence and an incredible amount of land. The couple couldn't understand how this was even here. They realized that James had a lot more connections than they could have ever hoped for. Barry, Monica and Liam got out and went inside to check out everything they were supplied with to live for the next eleven years, according to the doctor.

(MAJOR EVENT: TIME SKIP TO WHEN LIAM IS JUST A MONTH SHY OF HIS 7th BIRTHDAY)

At a log cabin in the woods, close behind the house, there was a little boy, about the age of seven, playing. This boy could be seen with shiny iridescent colored hair and his eyes matched his hair color. The thing about his hair and eye color is that the color moved across the follicles of his hair and the iris in a wave-like pattern that never ended.

This young boy's name is Liam Gray and he was currently playing hide and seek with his dad, Barry Gray. As he was hiding outside, he knew his dad was inside looking for him. He started giggling because he knew his dad would never be able to find him. A moment later and Liam could hear glass breaking and heard a loud popping sound that somewhat sounded mechanical. His mother, Monica Gray, was heard letting out a sharp and quick scream. In no time, Liam teleported himself inside where he last saw his mother.

The scene that unfolded right in front of Liam was straight out of one of his nightmares. Monica Gray laid there on the floor in a pool of her own blood, without any sign of life. He tried to look around to see what happened to her. Liam looked around the room until his eyes fell on someone. He saw a big muscular man in a white and gold trimmed suit with a navy blue cape that had the symbol of a dragon on the back. The only thing was he had Barry held up by his throat with his hand in the shape of a handgun, pointed it at Barry's head.

Barry looked right at Liam with tear filled eyes and knew things would never be the same for his son after this. The last thing his father ever said to him was, "I love you son, don't ever forget that! Quick get out of here and run to Pay and UT!" In the next moment another loud popping sound went off and the lifeless body of Barry Gray dropped right in front of his son. Liam had tears fall from his eyes, that matched his hair color. They ran down his cheeks and then, right in front of the big man, Liam Gray was gone.
