I always trusted my mornings. They were the one part of my life that is quiet, orderly, untouched by other people's emotions. But this morning, even before the knocking started, that silence felt wrong. Too thin. Like something was already breaking its way in.
I'm halfway through knotting my tie when someone starts pounding on the front door like they're trying to break it down.
Then another, like there's a fire outbreak.
"Ms. Vivian, can you get that?" I call out, walking out of the bedroom with my tie dangling around my neck and a mug of lukewarm coffee in my hand.
I check the time and it's six a.m. I wasn't expecting anyone and nobody sane visits at this hour.
The knocking gets louder, like whoever it is wants the whole estate awake. "Ms. Vivian!" I yell again.
