Chapter 73 - Chapter 72: Being Followed

After the call, Alex suddenly remembered that he hadn't contacted Professor Oak for a long time. After all, he had taken the Pokédex and promised to help him collect information.

"Let me see, it's been at least three months since I last contacted Professor Oak, hasn't it?"

As soon as he thought of this, Alex couldn't help but smile wryly. Finally, he opened his phone and called Professor Oak.

At Professor Oak's lab, he was sternly studying the Krabby in front of him when suddenly, the phone rang.

"Professor, you have a call." His assistant poked his head out, wearing an embroidered apron and apparently cooking for the Pokémon.

"Oh, I know."

Professor Oak stood up somewhat unhappily. It was a critical moment in his research, and whoever was calling at this time really had no sense of timing.

He walked to the phone and answered it. Alex's face immediately appeared on the screen.

"Hi, Professor Oak! Long time no see! Good evening!" Alex greeted first.

Seeing Alex, Professor Oak subconsciously narrowed his eyes and remained silent for a moment.

Finally, he slapped the table and shouted, "You little brat! How dare you disappear on me for so long without even a call? Not calling is one thing, but you haven't even sent over a single Pokémon! What am I keeping you for? To eat free meals?"

Professor Oak immediately launched into a nagging spree, rambling on and on, making Alex's head ache.

He knew this would be the outcome.

Alex gave a wry smile. After all, he was in the wrong, so he could only wait for Professor Oak to finish complaining.

After a long while, Professor Oak took a sip of water and said with satisfaction, "Alright, tell me, what do you want?"

"Oh, nothing much! I just suddenly thought of you. Isn't this me calling to say hello?" Alex said with a flattering smile.

Professor Oak looked displeased. "If you have this much free time, you should catch more Pokémon for me to research."

"Hey, didn't I tell you before? I can't catch many Pokémon for you! Besides, don't you still have your precious grandson Gary and Ash? Pokémon will come; it's just a matter of time."

Alex said coaxingly.

"I hope so."

Professor Oak waved his hand and asked curiously, "Where have you been all this time? Why haven't I seen hide nor hair of you?"

"Uh,"

Alex scratched his head. "I'm traveling with Ash and the others, and I have to help look after Ash."

"Is that so?" Professor Oak scrutinized Alex, studying him.

"Then why aren't Ash and the others with you?" he asked curiously.

"Ah, well, we separated temporarily because of some things and haven't regrouped yet." Alex quickly made an excuse. He couldn't let Oak know that he had participated in Team Rocket's competition.

"Alright, alright, no more nonsense. If you have this time, you should send your Gyarados over for me to research."

Facing Professor Oak's eager gaze, Alex calmly ended the call.

As for how Professor Oak was fuming on the other end, that was no longer his concern.

Afterward, he contacted Ash and the others, telling them not to worry and that he would meet up with them later.

Ash and the others were extremely worried. After a long conversation and confirming that Alex was truly fine, they reluctantly hung up the phone.

"Boss, why are you paying so much attention to a newcomer?" Apollo stood beside Giovanni, asking curiously in a certain room.

Honestly, who was Giovanni? Why would he be so concerned about someone like Alex? What kind of genius hadn't he seen? He truly didn't understand.

"Don't you think his face looks familiar?" Giovanni sighed slowly at the question, as if he had thought of something.

Apollo said thoughtfully, "It does seem a bit familiar. I didn't notice it until you mentioned it, but it's definitely familiar. I always feel like I've seen it somewhere."

"Exactly."

"He has never revealed his identity, but he must be that person's son. This talent cannot be disgraced. Now, it depends on his performance. I can also live up to his expectations, and maybe he can save that person in the future."

Giovanni deliberately didn't say anything else. Since the boss didn't want to elaborate, Apollo didn't press further.

Alex walked excitedly along the road. He had just checked on his Pokémon, and after this battle, their strength had improved significantly.

The system informed him that because he hadn't used the absorption function to boost his Pokémon's abilities, the experience points and combat power they gained through battle would increase faster than for normal Trainers.

Moreover, the system's reward had arrived: a Gyarados Mega Evolution stone, which was a stroke of luck.

"Boss, the target is out, near Golden City. Over."

Unbeknownst to Alex, he had been targeted the moment he stepped out.

This person had a weathered look, with a scar on his face, adding to a terrifying aura.

At this moment, he was speaking softly into a walkie-talkie.

Static.

"Received. Follow him quietly and wait for me to arrive."

"Understood, Boss."

Shoving the walkie-talkie into his pocket, Leo silently followed Alex, staying far behind.

Leo was a B-rank Bounty Hunter.

He possessed the strength to deal with ordinary Trainers.

The existence of these Bounty Hunters was even more ruthless than evil organizations like Team Rocket. Their targets were wild Pokémon and Pokémon of extremely high value.

For this, they would spare no expense.

Now, they had set their sights on Alex's Shiny Beedrill, Shiny Muk, and that Red Gyarados. Not to mention the Mega Evolution bracelet he was wearing.

Which of these Pokémon wasn't a rarity among rarities?

For them, these Pokémon had super high popularity and value. Once captured and sold, they would fetch extremely high prices.

It could be said that after this one big score, they could completely wash their hands of it, retire from the league, and become a group of idle people.

The important thing was that this person's strength was not strong. After all, he was a rookie Trainer, and he seemed to still be traveling. How strong could he be?

This job, they could do!

Of course, these were all just wishful thinking on their part.

After reaching this conclusion, the group of Bounty Hunters began to prepare.

Alex was still completely unaware that danger was gradually approaching.
