NESSA ~
My body wouldn't move anymore.
I tried to push myself up from the forest floor, tried to crawl away, but my arms gave out beneath me. The punctured foot throbbed with every heartbeat, sending lightning bolts of pain up my leg. My shoulder felt like it was on fire, the gunshot wound reopened and bleeding freely.
I collapsed face-first into the dirt and dead leaves, my chest heaving with exhausted sobs.
Get up. You have to get up. He's coming.
But my body had reached its absolute limit.
I heard his footsteps approaching , Slow. Confident.
He knew I couldn't run anymore.
"Nowhere left to go," he said, his voice thick and slurred from his injured tongue. Blood still dripped from where I'd bitten his ear, I could hear it hitting the leaves. "Thought you were so smart. So tough. But look at you now."
I tried to roll over, to at least see him coming, but my body wouldn't cooperate.
Please. Someone. Anyone. Help me.
