Chapter 29 - Chapter 11 — The Door Beneath the Stone

The lower halls of the academy did not echo.

They listened.

Kayden felt it the moment he crossed the threshold—like stepping into a room where the walls already knew his name. The torchlight flickered strangely, bending rather than wavering, shadows stretching in ways that didn't align with the stone.

"This place gives me the creeps," Lyra muttered beside him, arms crossed tightly.

"You're not even supposed to be here," Kayden whispered back.

"And miss watching you accidentally awaken something ancient and terrifying?" she replied. "Absolutely not."

Mira trailed behind them, eyes wide, clutching her satchel. "I read that these halls were sealed after the Third Cataclysm…"

Kayden stopped walking.

"…There was a third?"

Lyra sighed. "You really need to start paying attention in history class."

Ahead, Instructor Halverin waited—tall, broad-shouldered, his presence grounded like bedrock. Beside him stood Professor Ilyra Kaen, her sharp gaze already dissecting Kayden piece by piece.

"So," Ilyra said, "this is the anomaly."

Kayden raised a hand halfway. "Hi. I swear I'm not trying to be one."

Halverin almost smiled.

Conversation Before the Lesson

"Why am I here?" Lyra asked, squinting suspiciously. "I didn't break any ancient artifacts."

"Yet," Ilyra replied calmly. "You're here because proximity matters."

Mira squeaked. "P-Proximity to what?"

"To him," Halverin said plainly.

Kayden shifted. "That feels like a lot of pressure."

"It should," Ilyra replied. "Pressure shapes diamonds. Or collapses stars."

"…That analogy did not make me feel better," Kayden muttered.

Halverin gestured to the rune-carved floor. "Sit, Kayden."

He obeyed.

Lyra leaned toward Mira and whispered, "If he explodes, do we run or scream first?"

Mira whispered back, "Both?"

The Hall Responds

As Kayden closed his eyes and followed the breathing instructions, the change was subtle—but absolute.

The air grew dense.

Not heavy—attentive.

The faint hum beneath the stone sharpened into something almost melodic.

Ilyra's fingers twitched. "He's not drawing mana."

Halverin nodded slowly. "He's synchronizing."

Lyra frowned. "Is that… bad?"

The outline of the door emerged.

Chains etched with symbols older than the academy itself shimmered faintly.

Mira covered her mouth. "That seal… it's reacting."

Kayden's eyes flew open. "I didn't do anything!"

"We know," Ilyra said softly. "That's why this matters."

From deep below, something answered.

A vibration—not sound, not movement, but intention.

Halverin stepped forward sharply. "That's enough."

With a sharp gesture, he slammed his staff into the stone. Runes flared red, forcing the door's outline to fade.

The silence afterward felt… disappointed.

Kayden hugged his knees. "I'm sorry."

Ilyra studied him for a long moment. "You shouldn't be."

Aftermath — A Lighter Decision

Halverin exhaled. "You need space. All of you."

Lyra blinked. "Like… detention space?"

"Fresh air," he clarified. "The academy grounds. Supervised."

Kayden looked hopeful. "Does that include the city?"

"…Yes," Halverin said, already regretting it.

Lyra fist-pumped. "YES."

Mira smiled nervously. "I've never been outside the academy without a schedule."

Kayden stood, visibly relieved. "I just want something normal."

Ilyra watched him leave, murmuring, "Normal rarely asks to be found."

Outside the Academy — A Breath of Life

The city beyond the academy gates buzzed with warmth.

Market stalls lined the streets, laughter spilling between vendors, mana-lamps glowing softly even in daylight. The smell of baked bread hit Kayden like a memory he couldn't place.

Lyra grabbed his sleeve. "Food. Now."

They sat near a fountain, sharing skewers and sweet rolls.

Kayden took a bite and froze.

"…This tastes familiar."

Mira tilted her head. "You okay?"

He nodded slowly. "Yeah. Just—like I've eaten this… somewhere else."

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "You mean before breakfast?"

"No," he said quietly. "Before this life."

They laughed it off, but something lingered.

New Faces Appear

"Hey."

A voice interrupted them.

A tall boy with ash-brown hair leaned against the fountain, hands in pockets. His uniform was loose, casual—confidence worn easily.

"Name's Ren Varis," he said. "You're the kid who knocked out Toren, right?"

Kayden choked on his drink. "Accidentally."

Ren grinned. "Best kind."

Beside him stood a girl with short silver hair and sharp eyes. "I'm Selene Marr," she said. "You're interesting."

Kayden frowned. "I don't try to be."

"Good," Selene replied. "People who try usually die first."

Lyra stared. "…Why is everyone at this academy terrifying?"

Ren shrugged. "Survival builds personality."

Kirti, Watching From Afar

Across the street, Kirti stood beneath a sunshade, unnoticed.

She watched Kayden laugh—actually laugh—and felt something twist inside her chest.

That sound.

It hurt.

She turned away abruptly, heart racing.

"Why does peace look so wrong on him?" she whispered.

A knight beside her frowned. "My lady?"

"Nothing," she said. "Just… remembering something I shouldn't."

The Shadow Stirs

As the sun dipped lower, Kayden felt it again.

That pull.

That awareness.

He looked back toward the academy—toward the stone beneath it.

For just a second, he thought he heard his name.

Not spoken.

Called.

End of Chapter Beat

Ren clapped Kayden on the shoulder. "You coming to spar tomorrow?"

Kayden hesitated… then nodded.

"Yeah," he said. "I think I am."

And far below—

The chain cracked again.
