Chapter 8 - Whereabouts

Jake rose from the shadows back in his room, his tail and ears fell in exhaustion. "Too many teleports," he muttered to himself as he felt the headache coming. He exited his room, making sure he had everything.

He had snuck into Elena's room while she was asleep, he could easily remember her disheveled sleeping form as he put away Lamore's disguise and got his leather coat and other things he had left behind.

Jake walked down the halls of his family's mansion, simply wondering and thinking about schemes and plots. He found himself in the kitchen, and his stomach growled. He hadn't cooked for himself in a long time. He started to get ingredients and prepare them, as he started the oven and started to cook some fruits.

He flew around the kitchen; he knew where everything was and how to add just the right amount. He was considered a master chef; he earned that title through a competition on one of their adventures in the past.

He set down a plate, Steak au Poivre with Red Wine Pan Sauce. He didn't know why it was named that, but the last time he had it, it was amazing. As he dug in, he saw his father walk in and froze. His tail bristled and his ears flattened instinctively. "What do you want?" He snarled.

His father, Adam, was also a lycanthrope, but with brown hair and brown fur, he had blue eyes. Jake had gotten his black hair and fur, along with his golden eyes, from his mother, yet Jake himself looked a lot like his father, except for the large scar that ran down the man's neck on the left side, and streaks of it were on his left cheek.

His father, Adam, simply smiled, not reacting to his son's aggression as he sat down across from him. "I got another mission for you." His voice was raspy and rough.

Jake stayed silent as he watched Adam's movements very closely. His back itched in remembrance of what Adam had done. But he was used to the feeling, as he kept his eyes on Adam. "Where have you been, son?"

Jake didn't dare to look away as he kept his eyes on Adam as he spoke. "Bars, and wandering the city." His father nodded as he said, "Kill anyone?" Adam's voice had hope in it.

Jake's mind flashed back to Elena asking him not to kill again. "No," His answer was short yet harsh. Adam's face faltered a bit as he studied his son. "Why?" He asked, a slight growl in his voice.

"I only pursue those who will harm the business, not random individuals I kill for enjoyment." He said, knowing what Adam had done in the past, everyone knew what he had done before he was almost killed, which is the reason why people feared the Lockvry name and how they became one of the 5 major families in the underground city.

"Is that so?" Adam said with genuine curiosity. Jake nodded, glaring at him. "Well, I got a few things that you can do," Adam said as he pulled out a knife.

"Yeah? What are those things?" Jake asked as he watched the knife. His arms crossed, his hands landing on two hidden knives. "Oh, not much, just a few things and people that you need to take care of. Also, you lied to me," Adams' voice hardened as he watched his son.

Jake slightly gripped the knives slowly, almost unnoticeably. Adam chuckled at his son's reaction. "Really, still hate me after all this time?" Jake's grip tightened around the knives. "Yes," he responded, a growl in his voice.

Adam laughed, "I can keep an eye on you, and have been, for the past few months. I have been noticing you randomly disappearing for a day or two, each time going up to Altor." His voice lowered, "I am wondering what you are doing there?"

Jake's eyes hardened, and he was ready to strike if he pushed any further, but he spoke, telling a half-lie, half-truth, "I simply went up there to get some more information about... certain people, and use it to my advantage."

Adams' eyes watched him, studying him, "You plan on usurping me? Or what?" Jake froze at the question and thought. What made him think that? "No, I will simply wait until you die, old man."

Adam laughed at his son's response. "You have your mother's mind," he said as memories of her flashed through his eyes and a genuine smirk appeared on his mouth.

Jake slumped back, making a space between the two men. "What do you want me to do, old man?" Jake said, bringing up the topic of what his father wanted him to do.

Adam chuckled, "There are 3 people I want you to deal with, and 2 people I want dead," Adam said flatly. "They are a small group that has been poking around too much. I want to give them a warning, but the last I also want dead — but it will be tricky."

"Tricky?" Jake scoffed, but his mind still swirled with what Elena had asked him, asked him not to kill. "Yes, 2 are powerful merchants and one is a noble?"

Jake looked at his father, an eyebrow raised, "Yeah? Which noble house is he from?" Adam looked at him as he seemed to hesitate. Jake had a sinking feeling, and it only grew as his father spoke. "It's one of the 7 major houses"

"Which one?" Jake said quietly as he watched his father's mouth, and his heart dropped. "Falmil"

Jake's grip tightened on his knives as he was ready to strike down his father this instant. "Henry Falmil," Adam clarified, a hint of fear in his eyes as he saw his son slowly calm down. His mind turned at what creature or horror he had just seen in his own son's eyes.

"Henry… Falmil," Adam said, lightly observing his son, wondering why the Falmil house caused such a reaction from him. "He has connections to the Kanmis family." The Kanmis family was one of the other 5 families in the underground city."What is a member of the Falmil, one of the major 7 houses, doing?" Jake had told Elena that he didn't know of any criminal activities in the 7… but now a member of her own house was doing night jobs? "So you want to weaken them? What is Henry Falmil doing?"

His mind whirled as he thought of the implications and how this could affect Elena, how close was she to Henry? If Henry were discovered and his actions revealed, how would this affect the reputation of her house?

"Just taking some bribes or something to allow some enchanted weapons in," Adam said lazily, but Jake's eyes widened. Enchanted weapons? Those were highly valuable, yet depending on the enchantments, they were also very illegal.

"So you want to cut their supplies?" Jake asked, and Adam nodded. "Do we have to kill him? It will cause a lot of movement in the courts if a noble, especially one from the 7, is killed." Adam looked thoughtfully as if he didn't realize that.

Jake's brow furrowed at Adam's thoughtful look, "If they even have a hint it was one of the 5 families, do you know what they are gonna do!" he said, his voice growing in anger and intensity as he spoke.

"Oh... you're right, that would cause a lot of trouble..." Adam said, rubbing his chin. Jake was absolutely baffled that his father didn't consider the consequences of killing a high-ranking noble as if he didn't already know them.

"You just want to see high-blood spilled again, don't you?" Jake said, his eyes looking at his father's scar, and Adam chuckled. "Yeah, I love that rich blood on the dirt." His voice was sharp like a knife and had hints of desire in it.

"How about I just simply give him a warning, a warning that is quiet yet also efficient? I can easily threaten the man," Jake said, shaking his head.

"Maybe kill a horse, chop off its head, and throw it on his bed?" Adam said, thinking of something like that happening in the past.

Jake rolled his eyes at the idea of doing that. "I will deal with things, give me the information, and I will deal with it myself." Adam chuckled as he pulled out slips of paper and slid them towards Jake. "Good luck, son!"

Adam got up and walked out, waving goodbye. Jake looked down and took another bite of his meal... now cold as he grumbled and finished it.
