Chapter 8 - Chapter 4: A Knight in Distress

Three days had passed since Haru arrived in this unfamiliar northern land. The icy wind still stung his skin, but he had begun to memorize the layout of the fortress and the surrounding forests. He walked along the battlements, observing the soldiers as they trained, the clatter of armor ringing through the crisp morning air. Each passing day, he felt the weight of the knowledge from his past life more keenly. He knew what awaited these people—and he intended to change it.

Haru's eyes scanned the horizon, settling on a cluster of trees at the edge of the forest. Movement caught his attention: several armored figures struggling against an unseen threat. 'That is… one of the princess knights,' he realized. 'Alicia Arcturus. One of the Seven Shield Alliance. She's far from home, alone… and history tells me her fate is grim if she is captured here.'

---

A sudden shout carried on the wind:

"Help! Someone, please!"

Haru moved instinctively, crossing the stone courtyard with long, measured strides. He could see now: Alicia was fighting bravely, but she was outnumbered, being dragged by three armored men toward the dense tree line. Her silver-trimmed armor shone, marking her as nobility and skill, but alone she was vulnerable.

Alicia's thoughts raced as she struggled against their grip. 'Why now? Why am I so far from my homeland? How did I end up here… in the territory of the northern queen?' She knew the rumors—Olga, queen of the dark elves, ruled this land with iron fists. Many human women who entered were captured or enslaved. The thought made her stomach churn.

---

"Let her go."

The voice was calm, almost casual, but carried a weight that made the bandits pause. Haru stepped forward. Unlike what one might expect from a stranger in a war-torn land, he bore no sword in hand—yet every movement carried control, precision, and authority.

"Or what?" one of the bandits sneered, brandishing a jagged blade.

Haru's lips curved in a faint smirk. "Or… you regret it."

In moments, he disarmed the nearest man, flipped another to the ground with a swift motion, and kicked the last stumbling back. Alicia's eyes widened as she realized the balance of power had shifted in an instant. Chloe, moving silently from behind, incapacitated the remaining assailants.

---

Breathing heavily, Alicia straightened her armor and surveyed the men who had fled. She turned to Haru, whose dark eyes met hers with calm intensity.

"I… I don't even know your name," she said, her voice a mixture of relief and caution. "Why… why did you help me?"

Haru shrugged lightly, the faintest playful smile on his lips. "Because you're still in one piece, and I don't like seeing someone helpless."

Her thoughts ran quietly: 'He doesn't strike me as a hero… yet he saved me without hesitation. Strange… but perhaps I can trust him.'

---

As they walked back toward the fortress, Haru explained the situation, carefully avoiding anything that would reveal his knowledge of future events:

"You should not have been here alone," he said. "Olga's forces are strong, and she controls this territory with more than just soldiers. You're lucky I happened upon you."

Alicia's mind wandered. 'I was scouting the border on my own… I thought I could manage. But the northern elves are… far more dangerous than we anticipated.'

"Thank you," she said finally. "I owe you my life."

Haru only nodded. "Keep your gratitude in mind. You may need it later." He felt a playful pull at the corner of his mood, teasing without being cruel. 'She is brave, yes, but perhaps a little too reckless. I'll need to guide her… protect her… my way.'

---

Later, in the courtyard, the system quietly displayed the first quest for Haru related to Alicia:

[Quest Available]

[Objective: Assist Alicia in strengthening her defenses, uncover threats from neighboring human forces, and train recruits under her guidance.]

[Reward: Ally loyalty, combat intelligence, additional resources.]

Haru's eyes narrowed slightly. "Simple enough. Her fate is no longer sealed… not while I am here."

Chloe's sharp gaze followed him. 'He's not hiding his skill or knowledge, but he chooses carefully. That is… dangerous. And useful.'

---

Alicia walked a few paces behind him, her thoughts still tangled. 'Who is he? He is not boastful, yet every step he takes exudes control. I feel… safe with him. And yet, there is something unspoken, something beyond mere protection.'

Haru allowed himself a small smirk. 'She notices. Good. Let her feel some security… even if temporary. Trust must be built, not demanded.'

---

By the end of the day, the fortress was quiet again. Haru sat in his room, quietly reviewing the day's events. He allowed himself a brief human indulgence: a sigh, a small smirk, a moment of reflection.

'Alicia's fate is changed, for now. Chloe is evaluating me. Olga is watching, calculating. Every move matters. And each woman I save… may come to care for me, in ways history never allowed.'

He stretched, leaning back in the chair. 'I will be human, not a god. I will care, tease, play, and protect… in my way. That is how bonds are formed. That is how trust is earned.'
