Chapter 157 - When he arrived, the scene was already utter chaos.

Although the aircraft could reach New York at full speed, doing so would place an enormous burden on the human body.

Xu Dan had no need to fly at maximum power. According to the Red Queen's calculations, it would take several hours before the Chitauri army could threaten Antarctic Company. All he needed was to return within ten minutes.

When he arrived, the scene was already utter chaos.

The city had suffered devastating damage. Once-bustling streets now looked like the end of the world, torn apart by the Chitauri invasion. Giant billboards erected by Antarctic Company, promotional posters for the new game, and even ordinary civilians were being mercilessly attacked, with nowhere left to flee.

The police were still struggling to maintain evacuation order when a Chitauri aircraft launched an attack. If the shelling continued, the officers would be slaughtered on the spot.

At that moment, a fiery-red beam of energy shot out from the crowd, slamming directly into the chest of the Chitauri. The tremendous force sent the alien flying backward more than ten meters.

Looking closer, it was a mutant.

The Brotherhood of Mutants wore far more "individualistic" attire, making them stand out instantly among the crowd. From above, one could see a group of mutants charging against the fleeing tide of people.

Some mutants with altered appearances frightened a few timid girls into screaming on the spot.

However, there was a strict rule in place this time: mutants were forbidden from attacking civilians. Their mission was to protect them.

Who knew what obsession the boss had developed to issue such an order?

Humans had discriminated against mutants for so long, and now they were expected to save those same people?

Still, regardless of their feelings, the boss's command had to be carried out.

Several fast-moving mutants immediately rushed forward, escorting civilians who struggled to escape to safer areas.

Each mutant possessed different abilities.

For a time, superpowers of all kinds formed a living wall, blocking the Chitauri advance.

They were like a secret army hidden within the Earth. Though their formation lacked discipline, their offensive power was overwhelming.

Even with flying machines, the Chitauri vanguard could not withstand the intertwined barrage of superpowered flames, energy ropes, erupting ground spikes, and countless other abilities.

For the first time, mutants were unleashing their powers openly on city streets, in broad daylight, before a massive audience.

Because the boss had given his guarantee, there was no need to hide—no need to cover up, no need to restrain themselves.

Why should mutants hide their powers at all?

Members of the Brotherhood had long asked themselves this question. Deep down, they believed their abilities were superior to ordinary humans.

Yet in reality, even they had been forced to wear hoods and operate in secrecy.

But today was different.

Today, they displayed themselves without restraint.

This was where they belonged. This was where they should live—openly, proudly, without fear.

Mutants capable of frontal combat instinctively banded together, unleashing devastating firepower to suppress the Chitauri vanguard.

Those with powerful defenses or regenerative abilities stepped forward without hesitation, letting alien artillery strike their bodies to create a perfect output environment for their allies behind them.

Mutants unsuited for direct combat took on support roles instead.

On this day of proving themselves, they pushed their abilities to the limit, demonstrating astonishing coordination.

It was as if an immortal aura had ignited within them.

The Chitauri vanguard was crushed.

But it didn't end there.

If the Brotherhood of Mutants was the main force, then the approaching fighter jet was the stormtroopers.

It was an aircraft from Xavier's School.

Several elite X-Men leapt from the jet mid-flight, leaving only one pilot to continue aerial combat.

The X-Men unleashed their power.

Cyclops fired a crimson laser before even landing, sweeping across the battlefield. Under the searing heat, a Chitauri aircraft was instantly sliced in half, its occupants crashing to the ground.

Storm descended like a goddess. Her eyes turned white as darkness rolled across the sky. Thunder roared, and in a split second, a lightning serpent struck down a flying machine.

Beast, Hank, let out a ferocious roar and leapt directly onto a Chitauri craft, gripping it with massive hands, looking ready to tear it apart with his bare strength.

Seeing his teammates shine, Wolverine charged forward as well, pouncing on the two Chitauri who had fallen to the ground.

The battlefield became a graveyard for the Chitauri vanguard.

The civilians who had been fleeing began to slow, then stop.

When they turned around, what they saw were mutants—each one different, each one fighting desperately.

On ordinary days, mention of mutants drew disgust in most people's eyes.

No one remembered exactly when that prejudice began.

Perhaps it started with the first discovery of mutants, or the first sensational media report, or a personal encounter colored by fear.

Over the years, humanity's perception of mutants had never improved.

Yet now, it was those same mutants—once despised—who were risking their lives to save them.

They ensured that not a single shell landed among the civilians.

They promised salvation to anyone within sight.

Every blast from alien artillery fell upon their backs instead.

Even with superpowers, watching mutants being blasted dozens of meters away, burned and smoking, stirred deep guilt in the crowd.

They asked themselves:How did they deserve this kind of salvation?

This was not mercy—it was desperate, self-sacrificing protection.

Since these mutants joined the fight, not a single civilian had fallen.

Yet several mutants had already lost their lives.

Where were the police who once clamored to arrest mutants?

Where were the armies that mercilessly hunted them on television?
