Chapter 2
Deceiving the Heiress
Chen Mi opened her eyelids and found herself on a hospital bed bathed in bright white light. She slowly sat up from the clean mattress, her eyes sweeping around the room.
"Ke Xin, you've recovered!" The high-pitched voice of a young woman rang out with joy. It was Zhao Yuanyuan, who rushed in and hugged her.
She then turned to the two people standing next to the bed and said enthusiastically, "Oh my gosh! She's recovered! Go get the doctor, quick!"
"Okay, wait a minute," Wang Zehao agreed before quickly heading out of the room.
Mrs. Wang, Wang Zehao's mother, hurriedly stepped forward. She touched her daughter-in-law's shoulder and spoke with feigned gentleness. "Oh, you're awake, dear? Don't be sad, Ke Xin. Be strong. Everyone is gone."
Behind her was Wang Hao's sister who added, "That's right, sister-in-law, don't be sad; take care of your health. Look at you; falling like that shattered all of us." She nodded with a false show of concern, but the glint in her eyes was clearly fake. Chen Mi didn't need to think twice to know it was insincere.
Then, Zhao Yuanyuan released her embrace and offered a supposedly caring speech. "You have to be strong, you know? Take it easy. Even though your parents passed away in that accident, you still have us—you have Zehao, your mother-in-law, Sister Tu Ling, and your son Mu Mu. Your health is the most important thing right now, because there are still many arrangements to handle. If you fall ill again, what will Zehao and Mu Mu do?"
Chen Mi secretly glanced at the serpentine friend, smiled coldly, and immediately burst into feigned tears, playing the role of a woman deep in mourning for the benefit of the persistent schemers.
"Yuanyuan, my dear friend is right, woo." She let out a squeaky sob while wrapping her hands tightly around the other woman's thin waist.
"Oh, don't cry, don't cry," Zhao Yuanyuan said, rubbing her back and trying to comfort her, but her face was contorted because the fierce hug was making it hard to breathe.
"Uh..."
"Yes, I know you're sorry, but..."
Chen Mi pretended to be shocked. "Oh, I'm sorry. Did I hug you too tightly?" She then tightened her arms even more, treating the other woman's waist like a rope she was pulling taut, before finally releasing the embrace.
"Just a bit," Zhao Yuanyuan choked out, forced to cough loudly.
A short while later, the sound of two pairs of footsteps approached the room, followed by the appearance of two tall men. One was wearing a white gown—Dr. Liu, Wang Zehao's friend who was on duty that day. He was the one assigned to conduct the autopsy on the bodies of Li Kexin's parents, the couple who died in the car-truck collision.
"My dear, I've brought Dr. Liu. Let the doctor examine you," Wang Zehao said with concern. He then moved to help her lie back down on the bed.
But Chen Mi subtly deflected her wicked husband's hand and spoke in a weak voice, "It's okay. I've been sleeping for a long time. It's better not to sleep anymore. Let Dr. Liu take my pulse."
"Hmph...," she pretended to bow her head and cry to hide the calculating glint in her eyes—a glint that was definitely not Li Kexin's.
The young doctor completed the physical examination. He then said sympathetically, "Your body is fine, but you're just overly distressed and exhausted, which is why you fainted."
"Take it easy. Your parents are gone, but the living must carry on. Be strong." He comforted her.
He then avoided her gaze, turning to Wang Zehao as he didn't want to continue the conversation with his colleague's wife.
"Take your wife home. Leave the rest to me. The autopsy results should be available no later than tomorrow. If there are no issues, please come and retrieve the bodies for the funeral."
"Understood. Thank you very much, Dr. Liu."
An hour later, the couple returned to their luxurious penthouse in the skyscraper, right in the center of Taipei.
