Victor's POV
The cold that settled into my chest in that moment was something I didn't see coming.
Amy's eyes were still on mine. The whole room had gone the particular kind of quiet that only happens when everyone in it is holding their breath at exactly the same time. Seven board members, coffee cooling in their cups, every face turned toward me with the same question wearing different expressions.
I set my champagne glass down.
Slowly. Deliberately.
"That," I said, "is actually one of the reasons I came in today."
Amy blinked.
"Victor..."
"Let me speak." I adjusted myself calmly. Everything I had trained myself to be when the ground was shifting under my feet. "Before the end of today, before I walked out of this building, I was going to sit in this room and tell all of you exactly what I'm about to tell you now."
Nobody moved.
I looked around the table...David, Geoffrey, Robert, all of them ....and I told them.
