The Seraphine's Echo drifted closer to the Void's nexus, the heart of the corruption at the center of the Lattice Mind. Outside, the stars warped unnaturally, streams of shadow and light intertwining as if the galaxy itself were bending to the Void's will.
Elyra stood at the helm, her fingers dancing across the controls. Kael hovered nearby, still feeling the aftershocks of the fragment's influence. The Marauder coiled in the shadows, scanning the nexus with eyes that glowed like molten gold.
"It has changed since you last saw it," the Marauder said, voice low. "The Void is no longer a singular entity. It has evolved—a living network. It adapts to thought, to strategy, to attack. Every move we make is anticipated."
Elyra's jaw tightened. "Then we use what it doesn't expect. Kael, the fragment—it's our only weapon."
Kael nodded, running his fingers over the control ring that contained the fragment. "I know. But it's risky. The fragment may burn itself out… or worse, the Void could try to claim it."
The Marauder extended a tendril toward the ship's interface. "I can synchronize the fragment with the nexus's energy fields. It will act as a prism—amplifying its effect. But you must be precise, Elyra. One miscalculation and the nexus will consume us entirely."
Elyra glanced at Kael. "Together?"
He met her gaze, the weight of recent trials reflected in his eyes. "Together."
The ship entered the Lattice's core, a cathedral of light and shadow spiraling endlessly in all directions. The nexus pulsed at the center, a massive, crystalline network that shimmered like a living web. Tendrils of shadow wriggled outward, latching onto nearby light currents.
"Now!" the Marauder commanded.
Elyra activated the fragment. A beam of pure, harmonic energy shot forward, refracting through the nexus like sunlight through crystal. The shadows writhed violently, twisting and splitting as the fragment illuminated their network.
But the nexus responded. Its tendrils shifted, anticipating the energy flow, curling around the fragment's projection to trap it. The ship shuddered as a pulse of dark energy slammed against the hull.
Kael gritted his teeth. "It's learning… faster than we thought!"
"Then let it learn from us," Elyra said, adjusting the beam's frequency. She focused on the clarity of the Mind, the bond between her and Kael, projecting their will into the fragment. The energy pulsed, synchronizing with their intent.
The nexus screamed, a soundless roar that resonated through thought and matter. The living network convulsed as fractures of light spread across its structure, disrupting the anticipatory patterns. The Void's control faltered—but only briefly.
The Marauder's voice cut through the chaos. "It is evolving mid-conflict. The nexus anticipates even the bond between you two. Prepare for retaliation—unpredictable and immediate."
Elyra tightened her grip on the controls. "Then we strike again. Harder. Faster."
Kael placed his hand over hers, lending his will to the fragment. "For the galaxy."
The beam flared brighter than ever, sending shockwaves through the nexus. Shadows twisted, nodes collapsed, and the network's pulse faltered—but somewhere deep inside, the Void was adapting.
It was learning.
And it was readying its next move.
