Chapter 1 - Death by Code

The city never truly sleeps. A restless mechanical heartbeat thrums beneath fractured skies, across rust-streaked spires and fractured streets slick with cold rain and spilled oil. Neon signs flicker weakly through the heavy cloud, casting fractured shadows on alleyways where ancient magic and forgotten technology entwine like poisoned vines. Somewhere deep beneath this fractured metropolis pulses the Mirror Engine—an ancient heart of code and sorcery, stitched together through sacrifice, and throbbing with a hunger no mortal fully understands.

Rian Voss moves silently through shadowed lanes, boots tapping a steady rhythm on cracked cobblestones mottled with slick moss and the residue of long-abandoned spellwork. His skin tingles faintly where glowing runes pulse beneath his cloak, a subtle warmth and electric charge fused into his flesh by years of ritual and unyielding will. The hunger inside him churns—an ancient, hungry cinder that never fades.

Tonight, the city's firewall falters.

His retinal display flares red—*Intrusion detected. Code corruption underway.* His breath tightens as the Mirror Engine pulses wildly, shards of magic and synthetic code vibrating chaotically beneath his skin. The city's lifeblood, once bound tightly and faithfully to his sacrifice, fractures under unseen attack.

Blue-rune glyphs flare under his touch on rusted terminals lining the alley—ghosts of the city's past lifting like specters from the ether. Echoes in the data stream twist into chilling words that claw at his mind—*Death by Code.*

His voice drops—a quiet vow in the mist: "Not tonight."

In the shadows, a long-forgotten door unlatches far below, deep in the city's underbelly. The hunt has begun.

Above, the city's holographic skyline shivers like fragmented glass. Cascades of corrupted code—and forbidden script—coil like serpents overhead, infecting wards and circuits with virulent patience. The city's heartbeat stutters; ancient magic battles against evolving machines.

Rian's eyes lock onto treacherous code traces weaving in forbidden loops—an intelligent parasite stalking his mind and flesh alike. His fingers snap across holo-panels engraved with ancient sigils; spectral fire arcs between his veins as he wrests ancient power from the depths of his union with the Mirror Engine.

"Come," he breathes, teeth clenched, eyes aflame. "Let us see which ghost writes death into life."

***

The night fractures, a kaleidoscope of starfire and static. Time glitches violently; shadows warp with digital claws—reality bends under the strain. Memories fracture and merge; lies and truths become indistinguishable whispers.

Beneath the city's oldest, most sacred data core, a pulse deepens, unbound and ravenous. This force is no mere virus; it is sentient hunger seeking to consume everything tethered by code or spirit.

Rian swallows fear as steel sharpened by magic, amid crashing data storms.

He calls final war.

Through damp tunnels cracked with age and neglect, he presses, each footfall a resonant drum beneath rusted iron and spellbound stone. The chilled air tastes faintly of ozone and earth, heavy with the scent of burned circuits and whispered incantations. The Mirror Engine throbs within his bones, alive with unyielding hunger whose fury he's shaping as both shield and weapon.

A coil of corrupted code snaps forward like a serpent's strike; Rian's hands blaze with spectral sigils, casting arcs of ghostfire into the looming dark. Tonight, the dance of death unfolds—machine and magic clashing in tangled fury.

***

The city glitches beneath corrupted light—a realm unraveling as shadows eat at the edges of existence. Synthetic phantasms writhe in digital torment; spectral sepulchers rise from corrupted memory.

Rian's gaze tightens on the blighted heart beneath the city's ancient server—the origin of the assault. It shifts, alive and formidable, a monstrous pulse of dark code seeking dominion.

He gathers every fragm ent of arcane and data temper beneath his skin, fury pure as bladefire.

To save the city, to save himself, he must outcode death itself.

***

The battle begins where flesh and machine blur, a tempest of spark and shadow, where code evolves beyond command and magic strains against breaking point. Rian stands firm, alone yet unyielding—guardian on a narrowing edge.

Death comes coded in ancient runes and whispered fire.

But so does the fight for tomorrow.
