Chapter 7 - Goodbyes and Coffee

Goodbyes And Coffee

Leaving my old job was a difficult task. I'd known the people there for a long time, and in many ways, they had become my family. The thought of saying goodbye to them filled me with a deep sense of loss. I was so going to miss them. They had become such an important part of my life. I never envisioned this day would come.

The break room was unusually quiet when I entered, the hum of the refrigerator was the only sound breaking the stillness. I walked in with a heavy heart, holding an envelope containing my resignation letter. Iggy was already there, sitting at the table with a cup of coffee in her hands. Her eyes met mine, a flicker of sadness crossing her face before she quickly masked it with a supportive smile.

"Hey, Bella," she greeted softly, setting her coffee down. "Ready to say goodbye?"

I nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I guess it's time."

Mark and the chef entered just then, noticing the somber mood. Iggy stood up and walked over to them, giving them a nod that signaled they were in the loop. Mark's face fell as he took in the situation, and the chef's usual stern demeanor softened.

"Okay, everyone," I began, trying to keep my voice steady. "As you probably already know, today is my last day here. I'm going to start working with Mr. Sterling now ."

The room was filled with a quiet murmur of reactions. Mark stepped forward, his expression serious. "We're going to miss you, Bella. You've been a great part of this place."

Iggy moved closer, wrapping me in a hug. "I'm really going to miss you, Bella. But I know you've got to do what's right for you."

The chef cleared his throat and nodded. "Good luck out there. You've done good work here, and I hope this new path serves you well."

I glanced around the room, my heart aching at the thought of leaving these familiar faces. "Thank you all. It's been an incredible experience, and I'm grateful for each of you. This place has been like a second home."

With a lump in my throat, I took a deep breath and gathered my belongings. Each item felt like a piece of my past slipping away. The hugs and well-wishes were heartfelt, and as I made my way to the door, I couldn't help but feel a mix of sadness and excitement.

I paused at the threshold, glancing back at the restaurant that had been my refuge. With one last look, I stepped out into the crisp air, feeling the weight of the past lift slightly as I walked towards the future.

I'd been working here for a while now, and I wouldn't say it's been rosy. The initial excitement had worn off, leaving behind…..stress and anxiety. Stress had become my constant companion, and it seemed like Mr. Sterling either didn't realize or simply didn't care that I was human. A human with my own limits.

Everyone has their breaking point, and I felt like I was nearing mine. Last night, I barely managed two hours of sleep because I had to finish compiling a massive report on market trends that had been dropped on my desk last minute. I'd forgotten how difficult office jobs could be, and this one was proving to be especially demanding.

The fluorescent lights overhead seemed harsher than usual, and the steady hum of the office felt more oppressive. My eyes were heavy, and I struggled to focus on the spreadsheet in front of me. Every time I blinked, it felt like my eyelids were weighted down, as if begging me to shut them for just a few more seconds of rest.

But there was no time for that. Mr. Sterling had a packed schedule today, and it was my job to ensure everything ran smoothly. He wasn't the type to tolerate mistakes or delays, and the last thing I needed was to give him any reason to question my competence.

I stretched my neck and tried to stifle a yawn, glancing around the office. Everyone seemed absorbed in their work, oblivious to the exhaustion that was dragging me down. I took a deep breath and forced myself to refocus, pushing through the fog of fatigue.

It was another long day at the office, and I was dragging myself through the motions when I noticed a couple of colleagues lingering near the coffee machine. I'd seen them around before. Paul and Crystal. But I hadn't really interacted with them much. Paul was a tall guy with an easy smile, always cracking jokes with anyone who would listen. Crystal, on the other hand, had a bright, infectious energy, with a habit of twirling a strand of her curly hair whenever she was deep in thought.

As I approached to grab a much needed cup of coffee, they both turned toward me. Crystal was the first to speak, her eyes lighting up as she recognized me. "Hey, you're Bella, right? We've seen you around but never really got a chance to chat."

"Yeah, that's me," I replied, managing a tired smile. "And you two are...?"

"Paul," he said, extending his hand with a grin. "And this is Crystal. We're the resident troublemakers."

Crystal rolled her eyes playfully. "He's exaggerating. We're just the ones who make this place a little less boring."

"Nice to meet you both," I said, shaking Paul's hand. "How's your day going?"

"Better now that it's almost lunchtime," Paul quipped. "But hey, we've been meaning to ask you something. There's this rumor going around..."

Crystal shot him a look. "Paul, don't be nosy."

"It's not nosy if she's willing to share," Paul countered, then turned back to me with a curious expression. "So, there's been some talk in the office. People are wondering why Mr. Sterling personally requested you as his assistant. I mean, it's not every day the boss takes such a keen interest in someone."

I felt a slight chill at the mention of Mr. Sterling. Of course, there were rumors. How could there not be? "Oh, that..." I trailed off, choosing my words carefully. "I think he just needed someone with my experience. Nothing more to it."

"Come on," Crystal pressed gently, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "There's gotta be more to the story. We've all seen the way he looks at you."

I laughed it off, hoping to steer the conversation away from dangerous waters. "You're both reading too much into it. Trust me, it's just work."

Paul chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. We won't pry... too much. But if you ever want to grab a drink after work and spill the tea, we're all ears."

Crystal nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, we'd love to hang out sometime. This place can be a drag if you don't have friends to laugh with."

I found myself relaxing a little, appreciating their friendliness. "I might just take you up on that. A drink sounds good after a week like this."

"Great!" Crystal beamed. "We'll make sure it's a date then."

As I made my way back to my desk with my coffee in hand, I couldn't help but feel a bit lighter. Paul and Crystal seemed like the kind of people who could make even the toughest days bearable. Maybe this job wouldn't be so bad after all.
