The atmosphere in Konoha had shifted significantly over the past week. The first two stages of the Chūnin Exams had concluded, and for the first time in decades, the Hidden Leaf hadn't just participated—they had dominated.
The spectators from other lands were whispering about a "Golden Generation." Neji Hyūga's strikes carried an otherworldly weight; Sasuke Uchiha's speed seemed to defy the laws of physics; even Hinata Hyūga had displayed a fierce, unbreakable resolve that left her opponents stunned.
But for Naruto Uzumaki, the change was internal.
For the first time in his life, the whispers in the street weren't about the "Monster Fox." They were about the "Surprising Ninja." Last night, Iruka-sensei had treated him to Ichiraku Ramen, and for once, the shop wasn't just a sanctuary—it was a stage. Other Jōnin had stopped by, offering nods of respect and genuine words of encouragement. Naruto had gone to bed feeling like he was finally walking in the light of his own dream.
That was why the threat of Gaara felt so personal. Gaara wasn't just an opponent; he was a shadow that threatened to swallow Naruto's newfound sun.
"It makes sense that Gaara would look at you with such venom," Shen Mo said, his voice cutting through the nostalgia of the grove. "Think about it, Naruto. He is your mirror image. A jinchūriki who spent his formative years as a pariah, feared by the very people he was meant to protect. The One-Tails, Shukaku, is a restless, violent spirit that denies him even the mercy of sleep."
Naruto's grin faded. The reality of the sand-user's existence began to sink in.
"But where you had pillars to hold you up, he had none," Shen Mo continued, his gaze drifting toward the village rooftops. "You had Iruka. You had the old man at the ramen shop. Gaara... his own father, the Kazekage, viewed him as a failed experiment. He didn't just ignore him; he sent assassins to kill him. Multiple times. Can you imagine that, Naruto? Can you imagine your life if every hand reached out not to feed you, but to end you?"
Naruto's body went rigid. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. He didn't need a vivid imagination for this; he only had to look into the "what if" abyss of his own past. If Iruka hadn't acknowledged him that day in the woods... if the villagers had pushed just a little harder...
He would have been Gaara.
"I see the potential in you, Naruto," Shen Mo said, placing a hand on the boy's orange-clad shoulder. "But potential isn't born from talent or the fox's chakra. It's forged in suffering. Suffering is the kiln that hardens the soul. Gaara's kiln was hotter than yours, his suffering deeper. That is why I have high expectations for him as a customer—if he can find his way back to the light."
Shen Mo knew that beneath the bloodlust, Gaara was a child starving for a single scrap of affection. If Gaara could be turned, he wouldn't just be a powerful ninja; he would be a "High-Value User" in the Merchant Association's eyes.
"Uncle! Train me!" Naruto suddenly blurted out, grabbing Shen Mo's hand with desperate strength. "I have to win! I have to show him that... that there's a better way! I can't let him destroy everything!"
Shen Mo looked down at the boy's earnest face, then let out a soft sigh. Under Naruto's expectant, shimmering eyes, he slowly shook his head.
"I refuse."
"WHY?!" Naruto practically shrieked, his face crumpling in disbelief. "You're the strongest person I know! You sold me the jars! You know everything!"
"My time is incredibly precious, Naruto," Shen Mo shrugged, his tone casual. "I have a business to run and a world to observe."
"Nonsense! You've been wandering around eating dango for two hours!"
"You're simply not qualified for personal tutoring yet," Shen Mo added with a playful wink.
"QUALIFIED?! You just said I had great potential! Uncle, don't be stingy!"
Shen Mo felt a headache brewing. Naruto's persistence was legendary, and he knew the boy wouldn't stop pestering him until he got what he wanted. He was just about to release a sliver of his imposing aura—just enough to make the boy's hair stand on end and convince him to back off—when a voice interrupted the squabble.
"How about I take over the training?"
Jiraiya stepped forward, pointing a thumb at his own chest.
He hadn't met this boy before, but the pieces were falling into place. The whiskers, the orange suit, the "Nine-Tails" mention... this was Minato's son. His godson. He was louder and more impulsive than Minato, but there was a spark in him that Jiraiya recognized instantly.
Naruto paused, turned his head to look at the bruised, swollen, white-haired "Peeper," and immediately turned back to Shen Mo with a look of pure disgust.
"No way! Absolutely not!"
"Pfft—!" Tsunade failed to stifle a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.
Jiraiya's face turned a shade of purple that matched his bruises. He wasn't used to being rejected by anyone other than Tsunade. He took a step back, struck a flamboyant Kabuki pose on one leg, and exhaled a puff of smoke from nowhere.
"Hah! Listen here, brat! I am the Great Toad Sage of Mount Myōboku! The legendary Sannin! You're refusing the chance of a lifetime!"
In his mind, he looked majestic. In reality, with his black eye and swollen lip courtesy of Tsunade, he looked like a crazy person who had lost a fight with a beehive.
"Who cares about a Toad Sage?" Naruto made a face, sticking out his tongue. "You were just peeping at the girls' bath! You probably couldn't even beat the Jar-Selling Uncle's pinky finger!"
"YOU... YOU LITTLE...!" Jiraiya's pride snapped. He suddenly whirled around, pointing a finger directly at Shen Mo's nose. "Fine then! If that's how it is, I'll have a match with this 'Uncle' of yours! I'll show you exactly who is the more capable teacher!"
The grove went dead silent.
Ikaros tilted her head, her wings (though invisible) twitching slightly. Tsunade's eyes widened in genuine shock. Shen Mo himself blinked, genuinely surprised by the turn of events.
He's testing me, Shen Mo realized instantly, reading the ripples in the air around Jiraiya.
Beneath the buffoonery, Jiraiya was a master of information gathering. He couldn't abide a mysterious entity like Shen Mo living in his village without knowing the exact depth of the man's pool. This "match" was a calculated provocation.
"What's the matter? Scared?" Jiraiya crossed his arms, leaning back with a smug grin that didn't quite hide the sharpness in his eyes. "Since Tsunade claims you're an 'elder,' I'll be a gentleman. I won't use my full strength. It'll just be a simple, friendly sparring match to see what kind of 'wares' you're really selling."
The words were a classic trap—designed to force Shen Mo to reveal his combat style or his energy source.
"Jiraiya, stop being a fool!" Tsunade stepped forward, her voice dropping to a warning low. "You have no idea who you're talking to or the level of strength he represents. Don't embarrass yourself and the village."
Jiraiya's expression hardened. He saw the genuine fear—not for Shen Mo, but for him—in Tsunade's eyes. It was a warning he had never seen her give before, not even when they faced Hanzō of the Salamander.
Who is this man? Jiraiya wondered, his hand inching toward the summoning scroll on his back. Tsunade is a Sannin. If she's this protective... he must be a monster.
Shen Mo let out a soft, melodic laugh. He looked at Jiraiya, then at the wide-eyed Naruto, and finally at Ikaros.
