Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The setting sun is like blood

The setting sun cast a bloody glow over the old city, its dying rays illuminating the worn, weathered walls. Shi Chu walked quietly through the dimly lit alley, her shadow stretching out like a ghostly apparition. The stone pavement beneath her feet was uneven, and the silence was oppressive.

As she walked, a creeping sense of unease settled over her. It was as if she was being watched from the shadows. She stopped abruptly, her eyes scanning the surroundings with a mix of caution and concern.

The alley was deserted, the only sound the faint hum of the old street lamps. The air was heavy with an unsettling stillness. Shi Chu's instincts screamed at her to beware - danger was lurking, waiting to strike.

Her body tensed, ready to spring into action. Her right hand instinctively reached for the weapon hidden behind her. "Come out!" she commanded, her voice echoing off the walls. She looked around warily, her heart racing with anticipation.

The enemies emerged from the shadows like specters, their faces twisted into snarls as they closed in on Shi Chu. Six pairs of eyes gleamed with malice, with two alphas leading the pack. Shi Chu assessed the situation calmly, her mind racing with strategies.

Fortunately, she'd been working on her skills, or she'd be in a tight spot. A scrawny man with a pointed chin and monkey-like features leered at her, his eyes flashing with lust. "Boss, this girl's a looker. Want her...?" he sneered.

The alpha leader, a burly man with a scarred face, cut him off. "Business first. You'll get your fun later, with the payoff." He eyed Shi Chu warily, sensing she was more than she seemed. Her keen observation skills didn't fit the profile of a typical student.

But the alpha's arrogance soon took over, blinding him to the details. How could a beta girl stay so calm, surrounded by so many? He sneered, looking down at Shi Chu with disdain. Strength was all that mattered in this world.

The alpha leader snorted, convinced of his own superiority. What could a young beta girl possibly do? He had numbers, strength, and experience on his side. The girl was as good as dead.

Shi Chu surveyed the group, her grip tightening around the energy knife hidden behind her back. She was sizing them up, deciding who to take out first. The scrawny, leering guy was her top pick - weakest and most disgusting.

Without warning, she swung the snack bag in her left hand, smashing it into the alpha's face. The bag exploded, covering the floor in snacks. The alpha stumbled back, stunned and enraged.

Seizing the moment, Shi Chu drew her sword and activated the energy blade. A brilliant light sliced through the air as she lunged at the pointed-faced man. One swift stroke to the throat, and he dropped, eyes frozen in shock.

Before the others could react, Shi Chu spun around, attacking the next person in line. The group was caught off guard, reeling from the sudden turn of events.

The burly boss snarled, charging at Shi Chu with his massive axe. She dodged the blow with ease, her eyes flashing with cold calculation. The energy blade in her hand wove a deadly pattern, slicing through the dim alley air.

She moved like a phantom, weaving through the enemy ranks, leaving a trail of blood and carnage in her wake. The boss roared, rallying his men, but Shi Chu was unstoppable.

One by one, the enemies fell, until only the boss remained. Shi Chu's blade danced, forcing him to his knees. With a swift kick, she sent him crashing down, then efficiently dispatched his arm.

Her eyes were ice, her voice a cold whip. "Who sent you?" she demanded, the blade hovering at his throat. The boss's face beaded with sweat - he'd underestimated the target, thinking she'd be an easy kill.

Now, he faced the consequences. This beta girl was a force to be reckoned with, her speed and strength rivaling top alphas. He was no match. The boss's thoughts turned to the commissioner - what else had they missed?

Shi Chu's smile was a cold, mirthless curve, her eyes gleaming with an unsettling intensity. "Not talking?" she repeated, her voice dripping with menace. "Then join your brothers. But I promise you'll suffer more than they did."

With a slow, deliberate motion, she drove the energy blade through the boss's palm, the sound of crunching bone and flesh filling the air. The man's scream was ear-piercing, his face contorted in agony. Sweat poured down his cheeks, and his eyes brimmed with pain and despair.

"I'll talk! I'll tell you!" he gasped, his voice barely audible through the pain. Shi Chu's blade paused, her expression unyielding. "Speak," she commanded, her tone icy.

Shi Chu disabled the energy knife, and the blade vanished, leaving a harmless metal stick. She stowed it away in her schoolbag's secret compartment.

Her gaze fell upon the blood-soaked snacks, and she felt a pang of regret. What a waste of her food reserves.

A dark glint flashed in her eyes. If she hadn't been prepared, armed, and cautious, she'd be the one lying on the ground. The no-firearms rule in the main star had actually worked in her favor today.

She recalled the big man's words, and her expression turned calculating. The Leet family was behind this. She knew she'd crossed them, but the hit squad's incompetence suggested they didn't know her true strength.

Shi Chu's lips curled into a sneer. Shen Xiuyin was involved, maybe even the mastermind. Only she knew Shi Chu's habits. The connection between Shen Xiuyin and the Leet family was intriguing.

Trying to kill her was a grave mistake. Shi Chu's eyes hardened, and she turned to leave the dark alley. The setting sun cast a bloody glow behind her, illuminating her determined stride. The alley was silent, deathly so.
