Chapter 323: Empty Shell and Hope
Akira's thrown stasis grenade, with its physics-defying effects, instantly resolved the hostage crisis.
The pale blue energy field acted like an invisible amber, firmly locking the Klingon soldier and the Vulcan child outside of time.
Without needing further orders, Valerie and Jack quickly stepped forward.
They cautiously avoided the edge of the stasis field; Valerie used skillful force to pry open the Klingon soldier's stiff arm, while Jack carefully carried the thin Vulcan child out from the hostage-taker's grasp.
The child's body was incredibly light, and to the touch, he felt no different from an ordinary Vulcan child. However, the faint pulse of energy flowing faintly beneath his skin made Jack feel as if he was carrying a delicate, precision energy container.
Mann and Dorio roughly disarmed the Klingon commander subdued by Mael, along with the other incapacitated soldiers, tying them up securely with high-strength synthetic fiber ropes.
"How is the child?" Kirk stepped forward quickly, looking with concern at the Vulcan child Jack had laid flat on a smooth rock.
The stasis field effect had disappeared as the device's energy depleted. The child had resumed breathing and showed faint vital signs, but remained unconscious.
Carol immediately squatted down and used a portable medical scanner to examine him.
"Vital signs are stable. He just suffered from shock and slight asphyxiation, causing temporary unconsciousness," she reported, but her brows immediately furrowed. "Wait... his physiological signals are... very strange. Cellular activity is extremely high, and his metabolic rate far exceeds that of a normal Vulcan child, and it's even continuously accelerating..."
Akira's massive body approached. A slender probe arm extended from his wrist, its terminal sensor emitting an almost inaudible hum as it scanned the child's body from close range.
"It is not a simple physiological acceleration," his synthesized voice sounded, carrying an analytical steadiness. "His body tissues are resonating deeply with the Genesis energy in the surrounding environment. The energy is catalyzing his growth process in a way that defies natural laws."
Dr. McCoy also walked over. His face was pale, and cold sweat beaded on his forehead.
The closer he got to this child, the more restless Spock's Katra inside him became. An indescribable pulling sensation made it almost impossible for him to stand steady.
Enduring the discomfort, he also took out his medical tricorder to scan, and the data corroborated Carol and Akira's findings.
"Jim..." McCoy's voice was a bit hoarse as he pointed to the complex brainwave patterns on the tricorder screen. "Look here... His brain... is almost entirely blank. There is no formed memory data, no ripples produced by higher cognitive activities. There are only primitive brainwaves maintaining basic life functions. This... this doesn't look like a brain with a normal consciousness."
Kirk's heart suddenly sank. A blank brain?
Akira's optical lenses shifted from the child to McCoy, then back to the unconscious child, the crimson light flashing steadily.
"The logical chain points to a high-probability conclusion," his synthesized voice stated evenly. "Mr. Spock's remains were exposed to the core area where the Genesis Device detonated. That energy, which reshapes matter and life forms, contains the laws of creation alongside destruction. It may have reversed the biological clock of the remains and, using it as a template, initiated some kind of... reset program."
He paused briefly, allowing everyone to digest this information.
"This individual possesses the complete biological characteristics of Mr. Spock; he is a young Spock reshaped by the power of Genesis. However, the consciousness, memories, soul—or rather, his personality data as 'Spock'—did not return with the reversal of his physical body. This body is currently a pure, unloaded biological vessel."
"An empty shell..." Carol muttered.
Yet at this moment, an unbelievable light burst forth in Kirk's eyes.
An empty shell? No! This was not an empty shell; this was hope!
Wasn't Spock's Katra, his very soul, right inside "Bones" McCoy's body?!
"His body is... growing?" Kirk acutely grasped the key point, looking at Akira and Carol.
"Yes, and at an extremely fast rate." Carol pointed at the jumping data on the scanner. "Influenced by the continuous resonance of the Genesis planet's residual energy, his cell division and differentiation processes have been drastically accelerated. Following this trend..."
She did a quick mental calculation. "...In perhaps twenty-four to forty-eight standard hours, his body will develop to the physiological state of an adult Vulcan."
Akira added, his tone carrying a warning: "But this accelerated growth is built upon a resonance with unstable planetary energy. It is unsustainable and even harmful. If exposed to this environment for a prolonged period, when the planet's energy field violently fluctuates or decays due to overconsumption or reaching a new equilibrium, his body is highly likely to rapidly collapse from losing its energy support, manifesting as extreme aging and disintegration. You must take him off the Genesis planet as soon as he completes his growth and his state is relatively stable, severing this dangerous resonant link."
Kirk instantly cleared his thoughts: wait for this "young" Spock's body to naturally grow to adulthood, then take him and leave the Genesis planet with the Enterprise, head to the Vulcan homeworld, and use an ancient ritual to return the Katra within McCoy into this brand new body!
This was far more realistic than finding a cold corpse and praying for a miracle! There was true hope for Spock to return!
"We will establish a temporary camp right here!" Kirk made a prompt decision, his voice slightly raised with excitement but quickly returning to a commander's steadiness. "Mann, reinforce the perimeter, keep a close eye on the prisoners. Carol, Magos Akira, continuously monitor his vital signs and growth data. McCoy... hold on."
McCoy wiped the sweat from his forehead and nodded, his gaze complex as he looked at the young, quiet, yet incredibly familiar face on the rock.
The feeling transmitted from Spock's Katra within him was no longer pure restlessness; it seemed to carry a trace of an indescribable, faint anticipation.
Akira's mechanical body turned toward the rugged horizon, his sensors conducting a comprehensive sweep of the surrounding environment.
"I suggest setting up the camp under the rock ledge seven hundred meters to the northwest. The terrain there is advantageous for defense, and the geological structure is relatively stable, making it less affected by energy turbulence," he provided the optimal solution based on data analysis.
"We'll do as the Magos says," Kirk agreed. "Let's move there. Move fast!"
Everyone quickly took action. Mann's squad took charge of security and transporting supplies, while Jack carefully picked up Spock—still unconscious but whose body was already quietly growing under the infiltration of energy—and advanced toward the location of the temporary camp.
