"Not the same." Abel's response was immediate and sharp. "His stone creates barriers. It muffles sound and magic. The one hidden here works in reverse. It broadcasts a signal that seeps into earth and sky, touching every creature within reach. The beasts pick up this call, and it transforms them. Makes them savage. Relentless. Your fortress walls should terrify them, but instead they throw themselves against the stone without any sense of self-preservation."
His words settled like lead in my chest. The past two nights flashed through my mind - claws scraping against stone, soldiers vanishing into the darkness above, the endless assault that never wavered even as sunrise approached.
"You're saying there's something in this outpost that strips away their fear?"
