Chapter 4 - A hunt for the strongest

NEWS REPORTS:BREAKING NEWS – piles of bodies were found massacred and butchered in an alleyway on B-Sector E5.At first, the sight left the police force in what could only be described as shock, disgust, and absolute horror—only to later find that all twenty-seven bodies belonged to various cartel leaders. Two of them were confirmed to be infamous mass murderers who had been on the run for years.

The question is… did whoever did this know exactly who they were killing?Could it even be possible for one person to take down this many monsters in such a short time?

Stay tuned for more updates on this mystery vigilante.

That's how it began. The stories spread like wildfire—news after news, week after week, the body count only grew. Every victim: a killer, a convicted rapist, a war criminal, or someone with a record steeped in blood.

It didn't take long before theories began to bubble up from the depths of the internet and the chaos of the streets.

"Doing more in a month than all the forces in a year!" some said."Killing a killer is still murder. Two wrongs don't make a right," others argued.

But the real question was the one no one could answer: Is this person even human?

Conspiracies bloomed like weeds. Some claimed he was a devil that escaped from hell to cleanse the world. Others swore he was a vampire resurrected from his coffin. The most popular theory? That it wasn't just one man at all—because witnesses had spotted him in different nations, days apart.

They called him many things. But one name echoed louder than the rest:"A Feared Hero."

TEACHER: Alright everyone, make sure to finish your work before next class. You may proceed to your next period.

The class shuffled, bags zipping and chairs scraping as students headed out. The only topic on anyone's lips was the vigilante. You couldn't blame them—this kind of story was something ripped straight out of a comic book.

Yuri (thinking):Wow… feels weird hearing everyone talk about me like this. Feels like I'm naked or something.

Then—"Psst!"

A voice, sharp but hushed, called from the corner of the hall.

Yuri already knew who it was. His heightened senses made it impossible not to. But he couldn't make it too obvious. He turned slowly and spotted Sarah, peeking her head out of a classroom door.

He sighed and stepped in.

Inside weren't just Sarah—but three others.

He recognized one immediately: Eithen—the popular athletic boy with long, silky hair and a body that made half the school swoon. Then there was Gemma—a girl Yuri quietly admired for her gentle, steady kindness. She always treated him like she could see through the walls he built around himself. Her long black hair shimmered with faint purple highlights, framing dirt-brown eyes and soft, baby-smooth skin.

And finally—someone new. A guy in a hood and headphones, leaning against the wall like he was part of it.

Yuri: Uh—hello.

Eithen: Hey, what's up.

Gemma: Hey, Yuri!

Yuri: Hey, Gemma.

Duke: …What's good. Call me Duke. Nice to meet you.

His tone was flat, almost robotic. His face gave nothing away.

Yuri: I'm Yuri. Nice to meet you too.

Sarah: Now that introductions are out of the way… let's get started.

Yuri: Started? With what?

Sarah: Well, Yuri—

Eithen: We're on a hunt.

Yuri: …A hunt?

Sarah: Yeah, you see—

Duke: Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard of this dark, mysterious "superhero" people are calling The Vigilante.

Yuri: Yeah, I've heard of him. He's like… a devil or something, right?

Gemma: Exactly—or at least that's what people think.

Yuri: Okay, so what's he got to do with your hunt?

Duke: Wow, you really have been living under a rock. People all over the world are trying to find this guy.

Eithen: Some organization even put a five-billion-dollar bounty on his head—for whoever can bring him in.

Gemma: They justify it by calling him a rogue killer. Even though everyone knows he only kills other criminals.

(Sarah glances down, hesitant to speak.)

Yuri (thinking):An organization? The words hit him like a cold wave. This is bad… they found out about me this soon?

Sarah: Yuri?

Yuri: H-huh?

Sarah: As I was saying, there are over a hundred and twenty groups formed just to hunt down the vigilante. We can't let that happen.

Eithen: And there are only twenty groups—like ours—trying to protect him.

Yuri: No.

The word dropped like a blade. The room went still.

Eithen: Excuse me?

Yuri: Look, guys. This is dangerous. If the vigilante can take down world-class convicts, he can protect himself. There's no reason for us to stick our noses into this. Just stop.

Eithen (frowning): You don't get to decide that, understand?

Gemma: Yuri, no one said he can't protect himself—but we could still help. It wouldn't hurt to do what we can, to stand up for something that matters.

Duke: …

Yuri: …As I said, no. This isn't our business. We don't have to get involved.

He turned to leave.

Then Duke spoke, voice low and unreadable:

Duke: I wonder what he's thinking right now… you know, the vigilante.

Yuri froze for a second. Then left without another word.

Later…

After school, Yuri walked home, his mind a storm. But this time, he wasn't alone when he opened the door.

Waiting for him—arms crossed, face carved in stone—was Hiro.

A tall, mature man with neatly kept curls, sharp eyes, and a presence that demanded respect. And fear.

Yuri: H-Hiro… you're back—

Before he could finish, Hiro grabbed him by the collar, yanking him inside and slamming the door shut.

With his back turned, Hiro spoke in a tone that sliced like a knife.

Hiro: I warned you. I fucking warned you about this. But the second I'm gone, you spit in my face.

Yuri: …

Hiro: You blew it, Yuri. Three years of training—gone. All my work—wasted.

Yuri: Don't say that! I promise I'm ready! Just these three months alone, I've taken down a hundred and eighty-seven criminals—filth, Hiro! And I'm just getting started!

Hiro: You realize they're after you now, right? They know about your strength—

Yuri: And so do you! You know how strong I am! You know I'm not human—I can take them on—!

Before Yuri could finish, Hiro moved—faster than thought. His hand gripped Yuri's shirt, and with brutal force, he slammed him into the ground.

The sound echoed.Yuri coughed blood.

Hiro: You see? You're not invincible, Yuri. You bleed—just like everyone else. You're as human as the people you claim to judge. And you'd better remember—you can be killed just like any other man!YOU HEAR ME?!

Hiro's rage trembled into silence. He exhaled sharply, then turned and walked away—leaving the air thick with everything unsaid.

Yuri lay there, chest heaving, blood on his lip—but his eyes burned brighter than ever.

"Human? No… I'm far from it," he thought. And I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Just ask the millions who've heard the name…

THE VIGILANTE.
