Chapter 15 - Shadows of Retaliation

The office felt strange the moment I stepped in. The usual hum of keyboards and murmurs of conversation seemed sharper, more pointed. Every glance from a colleague felt like it was analyzing me. Every movement seemed too deliberate, too measured. Something had changed overnight, and I knew exactly why. Trent had noticed.

I walked to my desk, forcing myself to appear calm. Claire was already seated, pretending to focus on her screen, but I caught the slight tremor in her fingers as she typed. Ethan's office door was closed, his usual calm aura replaced with a taut edge I could sense even from across the floor. The subtle signs of chaos were everywhere, but nobody would admit it. Not until it was too late.

My phone vibrated. A new message from an unknown number blinked on the screen. I opened it carefully. The words made my stomach tighten: Selina, you should have stayed in your lane.

Trent knew. He had seen the breach. He knew our strike had been successful, and now the game was on a new level. I leaned back in my chair, pretending to review reports, but inside, I was already plotting the next steps. Every file, every email, every interaction could reveal too much if I wasn't careful.

Claire leaned closer, whispering, her eyes wide with anxiety. "Selina, he's moving his pieces. I think he knows the files were taken last night."

I nodded slowly. "Good. That means we're on the right track. But fear won't help. We act carefully, anticipate his moves, and stay invisible until the perfect moment to strike."

Around noon, Adrian called me into his office. My chest tightened, wondering if he had picked up any traces of our work. He greeted me with a neutral expression that gave nothing away.

"Selina," he said, voice calm but firm, "there's been unusual activity in the system last night. Security suspects an internal breach. I need your full cooperation."

I nodded, keeping my expression neutral, hiding the rush of satisfaction rising within me. "Of course. I'll do whatever's necessary."

Adrian's gaze lingered. "We need to find the culprit immediately. If it's not addressed, the consequences will be severe."

"Yes, sir," I said, concealing the truth. Trent's retaliation had begun, but every move he made only made the game more thrilling.

Back at my desk, I reopened the encrypted files from the Helix transfer. Every document, every code line, every internal financial trail represented a chance to dismantle Trent's empire. The weight of what I held in my hands was immense. It was dangerous, powerful, and intoxicating.

Later, Ethan appeared quietly beside me. He pulled out a tablet, showing surveillance footage from the office. My eyes widened as I recognized the figure moving confidently through the restricted areas.

"It's Mara," Ethan whispered, his voice tense. "Trent's new operative. She's clever, ruthless, and she won't hesitate to strike. I didn't expect her presence so soon."

Mara's reputation had preceded her. She was known for manipulating anyone around her and striking at weaknesses with precision. Watching her move now, I understood why Trent trusted her so completely.

"She's searching for something," Ethan continued. "And she's likely noticed the Helix breach."

I nodded, my mind racing. "Then we control the narrative. Every step she takes, every trace she follows must be anticipated. If she discovers the truth before we act, it could ruin everything."

The afternoon passed in a haze of subtle movements, calculated pauses, and careful observation. Claire hovered near my desk, visibly uneasy, yet determined to help. She whispered fragments of information about office procedures, internal schedules, and minor anomalies in Trent's workflow. Each piece was critical, each detail a thread we could use to stay ahead.

By evening, I was home, the city lights casting shadows across the room. I sat in front of my monitors, reviewing the encrypted drives again. My hands trembled slightly, not from fear, but from adrenaline and anticipation. Every line of code, every hidden account, and every manipulated record was a potential weapon. I could feel the weight of Trent's empire pressing down, but I had the edge now.

My phone buzzed again. Another anonymous message: You won't get away this time.

I read the words carefully, letting the tension simmer like fire beneath my skin. Let them come, I thought. I was ready. I had prepared, calculated, and anticipated every move.

I wasn't just surviving anymore. I was controlling the game.

Tomorrow, the office would face the consequences of our actions. Betrayals would rise, alliances would be tested, and I would prove why I was invisible, indispensable, and untouchable.

The night dragged on, but sleep was impossible. Every flicker of light outside my window, every distant sound in the city made me alert. Trent's retaliation was not theoretical anymore — it was imminent. Mara's presence in the office had added a new layer of danger. Claire's loyalty was tested, and Ethan's cautious guidance reminded me that every step carried risk.

I couldn't let myself falter. My skills, honed and hidden for so long, were my only advantage. I would use them to navigate the chaos, dismantle Trent's control, and protect those who had helped me. Every calculated move I had planned would now be tested under fire.

When the clock finally struck midnight, I allowed myself a single moment to breathe. The world outside was quiet, but the storm was coming. Tomorrow, Mara would make her first move, Trent would retaliate, and I would be waiting.

I smiled faintly. Let the chaos come. I was ready to meet it head-on.

This was no longer survival. This was strategy, power, and the thrill of turning the tables. And I would not fail.
