Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 - Boring missions

I stood at the village gates along with Rina and Souta. Waiting for our sensei to show up. Over the past month, my progress has exploded by leaps and bounds. Especially since those achievements pushed up my date of technique upgrade. Now I can control all five of my initial Jutsus.

STATUS

KUROSAWA REN

Power - Elite Genin

Phisique - 55

Chakra - 517

Specials - None

Skills - Tagcraft II

System Stats - 4

Call - The eye passes.

Soul

Develop Basic(0/5) 1000 SS

Physique

Prodigy Physique(0/100) 10SS. (Locked)

Chakra

Refining technique Basic(3/5) 300 SS

One Tail (0/1000) 20 SS.

Apparently, neither was still called a skill. But I was used to the System having high standards. So I didn't bother much. But the advanced Chakra control helped me master the barrier tag by and large. I was certain I was close. And then I could move on to the legendary storage scroll. Baby steps, Ren. Baby steps.

Today was an escort mission. Simple enough. Sensei arrived with a merchant and a horse-drawn carriage. We greeted the client and started off. We were vigilant and ready. Dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's. By the evening, we were bored. The next day, we were sparring with each other to pass the time. By the 4th day, we had almost given up hope of any excitement.

"Patience is a virtue. Especially for reconnaissance squads like yourselves. Besides, no excitement is a good thing," I had forgotten. Unless you are the MC, every mission does not spiral into chaos. The mission department did its job well, especially in peacetime. That's why it was there in the first place. Over the next few missions, nothing much happened. Except for a bandit ambush. They never had the chance. We discovered them too much in advance. One other bandit group ran seeing our forehead protectors. We hunted them down anyway.

Most missions had little to no excitement. I did get a small achievement, though.

Achievement - Killer II -Kill 10 hostile civilians.

Rewards - 50 SS.

LEGEND - 65

It had given only 1 Legend point. The pattern was obvious. One, then ten, then probably a hundred. A major change occurred just before my transmigration day, a few months down. Achievement - Path of Shinobi II - Complete 10 missions.

Reward - 500SS

LEGEND - 75

I quickly upgraded my Chakra Refinement Technique and was faced with a huge Hiccup. Everything was locked down.

Your Soul is too weak. Upgrade to continue Enhancement.

What? Are you kidding me? I just got so much SS. I was planning on steamrolling Chakra. What was the benefit of upgrading the soul anyway? Honestly, with my experience as a transmigrator. Body modification was acceptable. Soul, on the other hand, had a special place now. Not that it wasn't special before, but you get what I mean, right?

But since everything else, except the daily quest to gain SS, was locked. I proceeded to do just that. Saving in for a soul upgrade.

But what occurred on the transmigration day( 1 year from arriving) was what was important. I had gotten the Path of Shinobi achievement just before, and I wasn't expecting anything new.

Achievement - Survivor - Survive a year.

Rewards - 100SS. Call Token. Special.

LEGEND - 85.

The call token. At first, I thought it was related to that strange cryptic tab on my Status screen. But it turns out, it was a meal voucher. What I mean is, I could upgrade one thing regardless of its price.

Instantly make the payment in fragments or SS once.

My first instinct told me to upgrade my soul. But I stopped myself. From the way things were going. I might need to save it for it later. Especially since it could pay for fragments. Which I had no Idea about. Seriously. This system was a mystery in itself.

It didn't tell any details. It kept half its features locked and didn't even tell me how to open them or something. It didn't even have a system mall. Not that I had SS to spare for it. But it would be good to have some.

A chime made me jolt up. For the second time in history, System answered a question.

Special Section - LEGEND - 100, Soul Basic 3/5 and Physique, Chakra Volume and Refinement Technique Evolved once at least.

Call Section - LEGEND- 500

I tried asking more questions. But again. All I got was a big fat nothing.

Well, at least I now knew what was needed to open them. I was very near the Special section. That brought a smile to my lips. The call section, although it had a single requirement, it was ridiculous and felt out of reach in this life. 500 LEGEND, What the hell? Establishing a clan gave me only 50. Did it want me to become Hokage or something first? Yes, I had made the connection between LEGEND and prestige. Anything you do that makes you sound Badass is counted.

But for now, it basically meant grinding. One or two years at least, unless I get a windfall of 1000SS like Fisherman.

Suddenly, Souta stopped us. I sense enemies.

Good, I muttered. I needed some exercise. "Shinobis," he stated grimly. I guess I'll get my exercise and then some. My first actual battle against shinobis.

"Formation 2!" Sensei spoke out. We took positions. I was a bit confused, though. This was an attack formation. Shouldn't we be taking defensive measures?

"Ren, use the tags to scatter and diorient them, then take on the leftmost genin. Hold, don't take risks. I will take the Chunin. The two of you focus on the rightmost genin first. Eliminate him quickly. Then team up against the other 2."

Of course, he knew. But it was jarring to see our laid-back sensei in serious mode. We were an elite chunin plus above-average genin. But still, the battle was a grim a chaotic affair.

"4 of them. 3 genin 1 chunin from the Chakra," Souta confirmed. "They stopped a little short distance away."

"They just discovered us. Move out."
