Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 - The War of Ascension

The sky above Manhattan tore open like shattered glass. Fragments of light fell upon the city, burning through clouds and steel alike. From the fissures descended figures—tall, radiant, and terrible. Their armor gleamed like starlight, their eyes cold and ancient. The gods had returned.

Ethan stood amid the ruins, golden Qi flowing around him in waves, his every breath resonating with the trembling world. Lyra stood at his side, her cloak torn, her blade drawn. Steve Rogers watched from a distance, his eyes hard with grim understanding.

"They came faster than expected," Lyra said.

"They were waiting," Steve replied. "The moment the third seal broke, they traced the resonance. The last one is awakening, and they're here to stop it."

Ethan's gaze turned toward the heavens. "Then we make sure they fail."

One of the gods descended, landing with the force of an earthquake. His presence alone made the air vibrate, his golden hair flowing like living fire. He raised a hand, and every human soldier nearby dropped to their knees, their bodies crushed by divine pressure.

"So," the god said, his voice echoing through the ruined streets, "the cultivator dares stand before us. The thief of our power."

Ethan stepped forward, his Qi flaring like the sun. "You sealed this world's energy. I'm only restoring what you stole."

The god's eyes narrowed. "You meddle with what you cannot comprehend. Qi was not meant for mortal hands."

"Maybe not," Ethan said quietly, "but I'm not from this world."

At that, the god hesitated—just slightly. "An outsider. A remnant of the cosmic flow." He smiled cruelly. "Then your destruction will be… instructive."

Before Ethan could move, the god vanished. In less than a blink, his palm was pressed against Ethan's chest. The impact sent him flying through a building, the structure collapsing under the force.

"Ethan!" Lyra shouted. She leapt forward, her blade flashing, striking the god's arm. Sparks flew, but the blade barely scratched him. The god turned, his gaze cold.

"Child of the Veil," he said. "Your master's defiance ends here."

He raised his hand to strike, but a shield of blue light slammed into him, throwing him back. Steve landed between them, the air around him shimmering with Qi-infused energy. His voice was firm. "You'll have to go through me first."

The god sneered. "A mortal who mimics our essence."

"Not mimicking," Steve said, eyes glowing gold. "Evolving."

They clashed, and the world shook. Steve's punches carried the weight of storms, each strike resonating with perfect control of Qi. The god countered with divine might, his blows cracking the sky. Energy waves tore through the streets, leveling everything within miles.

Ethan pulled himself from the rubble, blood on his lips. His Qi burned inside him like wildfire, unstable but alive. The system flickered in his mind.

[Status: Critical. Qi Flow Disrupted.]

[Warning: Risk of Soul Fragmentation – 87%. Proceed?]

He gritted his teeth. "Do it."

Golden light enveloped him. His body felt as though it were being torn apart and reforged all at once. The air rippled, time itself bending around his form.

Lyra turned as the ground beneath Ethan cracked, symbols of light spreading in all directions. "Ethan—what are you doing?"

"Finishing what I started."

The gods felt it immediately. The air trembled. A second rift opened above the city, larger than before, revealing a vast structure hidden in the clouds—a colossal gate engraved with ancient runes. The final seal.

The lead god's expression turned from arrogance to fury. "No! It cannot be opened!"

He lunged toward Ethan, but Steve intercepted him again, their fists colliding in a blinding flash. Lyra darted forward, slicing through smaller divine entities that emerged from the rift. Their golden blood stained the air like sunlight.

Ethan's eyes glowed white. Within his mind, he stood once again before the Guardian.

"You've come far," the Guardian said, his voice echoing through the void. "But this path demands sacrifice."

Ethan's tone was calm. "I know. Tell me what I have to do."

"The final seal binds creation itself. It was forged not by gods, but by something greater—the Source. To break it, you must merge your soul with the flow of the universe. You will cease to exist as you are."

Ethan's expression didn't change. "If that's what it takes to free this world, then I accept."

The Guardian regarded him with quiet pride. "Then you are truly one of us."

The vision faded.

Ethan opened his eyes, and the world erupted in gold. His Qi surged beyond mortal limits, his aura expanding until it filled the sky. The gods faltered as the resonance overwhelmed their divine energy.

"What are you?" one of them cried.

Ethan rose into the air, his voice steady. "A cultivator."

He extended his hand toward the gate. The seal's runes flared, responding to his presence. The ground shook, the rivers reversed their flow, and the air became dense with raw creation energy.

The lead god screamed in rage and desperation. "If the seal breaks, everything ends! You will destroy all realms!"

Ethan's voice was calm, resolute. "Then I'll rebuild them."

The god launched himself forward, divine sword drawn. Steve intercepted once more, his Qi shield shattering under the impact. The blade pierced his shoulder, but Steve didn't fall. He looked at Ethan and shouted, "Do it! Don't stop now!"

Ethan clenched his fist. "Hang on, Steve."

The gate began to open. Golden streams of light poured out, illuminating the battlefield. The divine army cried out in terror as the energy consumed them. Lyra fought to stand against the pressure, her body trembling. "Ethan—it's too much! You'll burn yourself out!"

"I know," he said softly. "But it's worth it."

In that instant, time stopped.

The noise, the battle, the storm—everything froze. A single figure descended from the center of the light—a woman, cloaked in white, her face obscured. Her presence was neither divine nor mortal but something beyond both.

Ethan's heart stilled. "You're the Source."

Her voice was soft, echoing through the still air. "You seek to free what was sealed. Do you understand the cost?"

"I do."

"The gods will fall. The world will fracture. Time will rewrite itself once more. Even your existence will fade into the flow."

He smiled faintly. "Then I'll become part of it."

The Source regarded him for a long moment. "So be it."

She touched his forehead, and the world exploded in light.

Energy poured from Ethan's body, merging with the rift, spreading across the planet. Every dormant Qi node awakened, every seal dissolved. The gods screamed as their essence was stripped away, returning to the Source.

Lyra fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "Ethan…"

Steve looked up, his wounded arm trembling. "He's… doing it."

Above them, Ethan's body dissolved into golden fragments. His final words echoed through the collapsing sky.

"Balance restored."

Then, silence.

The light faded. The rift closed. The heavens cleared.

Hours passed before the first rays of dawn broke over the ruins of the city. The divine armies were gone. The gods' presence had vanished. The world, though scarred, was alive.

Steve stood amid the wreckage, his uniform torn, his face weary. He felt the faint pulse of Qi still within him—but it was calm now, no longer violent. "He did it," he murmured.

Lyra stood beside him, holding what little remained—a fragment of golden crystal, pulsing faintly with light. "He's not gone," she whispered. "Just… beyond."

Steve looked toward the horizon, where the sun rose over the quiet city. "Then maybe this world finally has a chance."

Lyra closed her eyes, the wind lifting her hair. "He freed us all. But someday… he'll return. When the balance breaks again."

Far above the sky, beyond the reach of mortal eyes, a faint spark drifted through the stars—a single ember of golden Qi, pulsing like a heartbeat.

Within it, a voice whispered.

The path of cultivation never ends.

And in the vast silence of the universe, something ancient stirred once more.

To be continued.
