Chapter 45 - Chapter 34: The Gunshot Will Eventually Ring

"So... what are you trying to say?"

Elysia waved her hand in the air, showing her confusion.

"...Elysia, your feigned innocence is truly annoying."

Elysia spread her hands innocently: "But I'm telling the truth. I truly don't know the purpose of all this."

"You..." Mobius paused, then something clicked, and she nodded in sudden realization. "I almost forgot, you're also a person of unknown origin, aren't you?"

Elysia blinked and smiled: "But I have proper employment channels and records~"

"Hmph, records—the easiest thing to fake." Mobius had naturally investigated Elysia. She didn't believe a word of her suspiciously flawless employment record. "I'm too lazy to pursue your issues; they don't concern me. But what happened to Lin is very interesting to me."

"Hmm... Should I go ask him?"

"..."

Mobius's gaze was strongly inclined to treat Elysia as an idiot.

"Oh, don't look at me like that! Lin is genuine with his friends, so he'd definitely be willing to talk if you just ask." Elysia shrugged indifferently. "But since Dr. Mobius thinks it's no good, then you should just go ask him yourself. It's not difficult; you just need to become his friend."

"Don't be ridiculous, Elysia. Forget it. I'm foolish enough to talk about this with you. Now, you've eaten enough, just go." Mobius impatiently waved her hand, like shooing away a fly.

This woman was far more troublesome than the cold-faced man. Mobius had thought she could use Elysia's excessive curiosity to help find what she was looking for, but Elysia was completely different in this aspect compared to her usual antics.

"Dr. Mobius, are you simply curious, or are you worried that the situation might develop beyond your control?"

"..."

Elysia's light question as she reached the doorway made the air freeze.

Mobius had her back to her and turned off the lights in the room.

"Tap."

In the total darkness, a pair of faint green eyes quietly lit up, looking behind her.

"I think worry is unnecessary. No matter what experiences we've had, there's only one reason we all exist here together, isn't there?"

This was why she wasn't interested in Lin's past.

If she were to delve into Lin's secret, she might tear open his old wounds, and even if he pretended not to care, well...

Elysia's smile was as bright as sunshine.

After cleaning the dishes and washing his hands, Lin left and walked toward the R&D Department. On the intricate pathways of this vast headquarters base, he encountered an "acquaintance."

The bandaged young man coldly glanced at the tall man approaching from the front, then turned sharply, intending to walk around him.

"Tap."

A foot spanned the path, blocking his way.

Lin looked up slightly, gazing at the man who was a little taller than himself, staring at him without saying a word.

Sigma's face was gloomy. His gaze lingered on Lin's legs for a few seconds before he spoke slowly: "You've recovered?"

Lin thought for a moment and nodded: "Dr. Mobius's doing."

"Is that so? Then 'congratulations' on hooking up with Mobius." Sigma commented sarcastically. Mobius's notoriety was known to all, though mostly for bad reasons.

Lin didn't respond. He simply asked, "Is there anything else?"

"Yes."

"Speak."

Sigma's gloomy expression softened slightly. He stared at Lin's expressionless face and exhaled heavily: "What happened last night was too aggressive of me."

"..." An unexpected development, but Lin showed no reaction. He simply crossed his arms, waiting indifferently for Sigma's next statement.

Sigma had heard rumors of Lin's aloofness. He withdrew his blocking foot and said, "Your rumors have been circulating for months, including your military achievements, personality, and the weapons and equipment you use."

Lin knew this. Elysia's initial approach was also due to the rumors.

However, Sigma was the first to harbor such intense hostility toward him purely because of rumors.

"I haven't had much interaction with you, so my impression of you was based on those assembled rumors, which led to some misunderstandings."

Sigma paused here, gauging Lin's reaction. Seeing that Lin still looked unresponsive, he continued, "I've had some minor friction with Delta, which compounded the misunderstanding. I reviewed your combat records after I got back yesterday."

"To be honest, your overall combat strategy is amazing. You are definitely not someone who achieves brilliant results solely through equipment performance."

"..."

The compliment came somewhat abruptly. The man who had been verPartyy abusive just yesterday was now praising his individual ability. Unless Sigma was truly a man of great tolerance, most people wouldn't be able to swallow their pride like this.

Lin shook his head: "It's nothing. There were plenty of others who could have done better than me in that situation."

"Perhaps, but the one who was there at that time was you. There is no doubt about that."

Sigma extended his hand and nodded to Lin: "In any case, I don't expect your forgiveness, but I hope we can start over. I am MSA-066, Sigma from the Tactical Command Department."

"You don't need my forgiveness." Lin decided to grant him this courtesy, extending his hand for a handshake. "MSA-079, Soldier Lin."

"You seem to have somewhere to be. I won't detain you. Goodbye."

Lin nodded in acknowledgment, bypassed Sigma, and continued walking forward.

"..."

The tall man narrowed his eyes, watching Lin's retreating back.

Recovered? His aura was still weak, his steps unsteady, and his handshake lacked strength. He could likely only walk with difficulty.

At this moment, even if someone were to shoot him from the front, he wouldn't be able to dodge, would he?

And if it were from behind...

Sigma silently drew a pistol from inside his collar, slowly aiming it at the back of Lin's head.

Lin walked forward, completely unaware, oblivious that a cold, gleaming gun barrel was pointed at his head from behind.

It would take only a pull of the trigger to easily kill this unsuspecting man.

Should I execute the order here?

Lin walked farther and farther, about to reach the corner.

His finger began to tighten, the trigger pulling back.

The cold gleam in Sigma's eyes and the hidden anger began to dominate his expression. His finger tightened, his grip on the gun turning his knuckles white.

"Tsk..."

He lowered the gun, turned, and hurried in the opposite direction.

Lin stopped at the corner, subtly glanced at Sigma's retreating figure, and then continued on his way as if nothing had happened.
