Chapter 18 - First steps

Gwin was looking at the empty stage with a mix of fear and curiosity. Most of what awakened Rock had said was already known to him but even then he still learned something. He had not known he would be sent near others.

'That should make things easier right?'

Of course people were just as dangerous as nightmare creatures and calling it easier would be wrong. More like it would be possible.

Awakened Rock's attempts at scaring the sleepers had been very successful but Gwin couldn't help but feel excited as well. He was curious about where he'd end up and with who. The excitement and fear wrestled in his stomach making him feel a little sick.

Soon his communicator dinged with the information on the dorm and his room. The sleepers began filing out of the hall and dispersing into the sleeper compound. Gwin began heading to his dorm room too but not before shooting one last glance at the daughter of Ki Song. She was heading in the direction of the dorms ahead of him with measured and graceful steps. Gwin stopped for a moment to put some distance between them.

After finding his room he dropped his bag off and settled on the bed. The dorm room was similar to his room except for how sterile it felt. Gwin's room had felt lived in because it was, all the sterile scent did was try to mask the traces of the sleeper who once shared the room.

Whether they were alive or not Gwin did not know.

 A screen played pictures of the outside world mimicking a window. The furniture was made of alloy. Overall it was nice.

Gwin had also received some academy issued clothing on his bed as well. After unpacking he headed for the cafeteria.

He was having trouble feeling hungry until the fragrant scent of real meat hit his nostrils. He had only ever had real meat once when his dad had joined the House of Night. He hungrily stacked meat on his plate making sure to get a few vegetables as well. His fear was smothered under layers of meat making it hard to cause him trouble.

Feeling satisfied after tearing apart his small feast, he headed for his dorm to get ready for the interview. He was going to have to pick his courses which would define his future chances. There were many useful courses to pick from like the core combat course. He had more time than most until the winter solstice and he planned on using it well. He had two courses in mind.

Gwin's communicator pinged and he soon found himself in a small room sitting across from a young woman. To Gwin's astonishment the desk separating them was made out of real wood.

'Holy…'

He hadn't seen so much real wood since climbing the nest of Kesh. Wood was an extremely rare thing to find in the real world just like real meat.

'I feel like this shouldn't shock me as much as it does.'

The interview started soon which was a bit awkward for all parties. She started the interview by asking Gwin if he was in need of psycologival counseling and then asked if he was willing to share about his first nightmare. He remained silent and shook his head no to both questions. In truth he might have needed some help after the hellish experience of being digested but he knew that sharing too much wasn't a good thing.

After that awkward silence she went onto asking about his aspect. Gwin had no intention of sharing that either but he knew his wasn't exactly a subtle aspect though. He sighed reluctantly and pulled out his communicator and began typing.

{Snake transformation}

The woman eagerly wrote something down in her notebook.

"Anything else you want to share?"

Gwin shook his head no.

She moved on to the important part of the interview.

"Have you decided which class or classes you would like to take? I would recommend the core combat class."

{Nightmare creature weak points and the core combat class}

'I'm not just saying that because you recommended it…'

She marked something down before turning back.

"Looks like we are finished here! Your class times and locations will be sent to your communicator soon"

With that Gwin left the small office and headed back to his room. Night had already fallen painting the world a stark black as he went outside. Countless lights lit up the horizon where tall buildings peeked over the walls of the academy and cut off the sky. Gwin was feeling melancholic.

His life was never going to be like it was again, he still wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or bad thing yet.

'Depends on if I survive I guess.'

He inhaled deeply through his nose which made him wince a little. His senses had been increased greatly after becoming a sleeper and he could now smell better than any mundane human ever could. His nose was tingling from all of the new sensations. He could smell the stale air as well as sweat.

A lot of sweat. Which actually made sense. The awakened academy was a place where people prepared themselves to be their best in an attempt not to die. Sweating would come naturally from that, still, it was pungent and made him want to get inside
