Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Unremarkable Hakushi

Hakushi carefully examined the application form for medical ninja training.

On it, not only were the details for applying for medical ninja training included, but also the subsidies and resources the village would tilt in their favor after becoming a medical ninja, including salary aspects, clearly stated.

It was also noted that on the battlefield, medical ninjas are the least likely to die type of ninja.

Because all medical ninjas stay in the base camp of the formation, where they are responsible for treating the wounded.

Even if a medical ninja in a team goes to fight on the front line and is captured by the enemy, the enemy is unlikely to kill the medical ninja and would rather imprison them.

Whether as a bargaining chip or to have the imprisoned medical ninja help treat their wounded, these are issues that major ninja villages need to consider.

No wonder, the Ninja Realm currently has too few medical ninjas.

Every medical ninja is a valuable resource for the village.

Even if the enemy captures a medical ninja, they are reluctant to kill them.

With all these advantages, medical ninjas are indeed the type of ninja with the lowest mortality rate.

The prerequisite for becoming a medical ninja is to undergo a test, and only those with Yang Attribute Chakra can be trained.

Without Yang Attribute Chakra, even if one has a strong desire to become a medical ninja, they will be turned away, at most serving as an assistant or nurse—commonly known as running errands or doing odd jobs.

Two days later, Hakushi submitted his application form to his homeroom teacher, Fujimura Daiga.

Together with Hakushi, there were a few others who also wanted to become medical ninjas.

After school, Fujimura Daiga took them to a classroom that had been vacant for a long time, where a few ninjas wearing ninja suits and animal masks awaited them. They were members of the Anbu directly under the Hokage.

A total of thirty to forty students gathered here, and these Anbu ninjas conducted checks in sequence. If someone had Yang Attribute Chakra, they stayed; if not, they were excluded.

Twenty-three people were selected, with Hakushi being one of them. All twenty-three had Yang Attribute Chakra.

Thus, the Anbu ninja informed Hakushi and the others that they would be the first batch trained as medical ninjas at Konoha Village's Ninja School. Previous medical ninjas were not trained from a young age at the school; most were self-taught and varied in ability.

This time, a truly formal experimental class for training medical ninjas was established—

The First Medical Ninja Training Experimental Class.

The class time for Hakushi and the others in the first experimental class was from three in the afternoon after school until five.

Each day had nearly two hours of training.

Because they are medical ninjas, their graduation exams would be much easier, and there would be many additional subsidies each year.

The teacher for Hakushi's first experimental class was a Special Jonin from the Anbu who was proficient in medical ninjutsu and was promoted to Special Jonin for this reason.

His achievements in medical ninjutsu were notable within Konoha.

According to him, the foundational medical knowledge of the Anbu directly under the Hokage was also under his responsibility, indicating that the Konoha upper ranks greatly valued the outcomes of the first medical ninja training experimental class, hoping that in a few years, dozens of excellent medical ninjas would emerge to lower the mortality rate on Konoha's front lines.

In the first class, the Anbu ninja handed out a few textbooks to each student and required them to master all key knowledge points in these textbooks within six months, with weekly theoretical exams where those who excel could receive rewards.

The rewards could be ninja techniques or financial support.

Hakushi roughly glanced over and found it was all stuff he had mastered, but to not draw attention, he decided to keep a low profile.

Performance... being average is good enough, slightly above or below the average line is fine too.

However, maintaining a middle position is actually very difficult to achieve.

This is because one must consider that some questions cannot be solved by a student of average level, so it's crucial to study which questions to answer, which to leave blank, which to answer partially, and which to answer correctly without arousing suspicion. This is an incredibly profound subject.

Fortunately, over the past two years, Hakushi had accumulated an abundance of experience, making it not challenging to cope at all.

He aimed to give the impression of having a solid foundation but could only solve a portion or half of advanced problems like a middle-level student.

Sigh... becoming more adept at disguising day by day.

Maintaining this facade continuously, it feels as if there's truly no difference between himself and a middle-level student.

The bell rang, and Hakushi emerged from the first experimental class's classroom; it was already five in the afternoon.

The students of the first experimental class spent two more hours each day in medical ninjutsu learning than normal students.

But the benefits are also obvious, especially for civilians not from a ninja family, as becoming a medical ninja is a good path.

Seeing that it was about time, Hakushi quickly ran toward the woods in the school's back mountain.

There, Ruri was already waiting for him.

This was a training ground belonging to both Hakushi and Ruri.

Rarely would anyone pass through here, so there was a level of secrecy.

Moreover, as their powers grew stronger, an ordinary ninja approaching would trigger mechanisms, alerting the two of them.

Not only did Hakushi not want to be disturbed, but Ruri also disliked interacting with unrelated people.

Because it's within the village, these traps are designed to imprison the trigger rather than kill.

"You're late."

Ruri was wearing a black tight-fitting outfit, her long black hair slightly lifting in the breeze, arms crossed in front of her chest, her face showing a bored look of waiting.

Hakushi didn't mind, or rather, he was used to it.

He glanced around; many scattered, chaotic shurikens lay on the ground, along with several pits with charred marks, probably from Ruri practicing shuriken throwing jutsu and Fire Style Ninjutsu after school.

Judging by the number of shurikens, their condition, and the extent of charring around the pits, Ruri's shuriken throwing jutsu and Fire Style Ninjutsu were ever more refined.

"What are we playing today? Free combat?"

"No, this time let's play a game where we fight with our eyes closed. The loser cleans up the field last."

Hakushi nodded, agreeing to this kind of game.

Ruri occasionally proposed some rather peculiar styles of combat games.

For instance, there was once a game where they stood still and continuously threw shuriken at each other, and whoever moved first would lose. Hakushi lost that time by a narrow margin.

So, without any prelude or dramatic atmosphere, the two closed their eyes simultaneously, scattering immediately from where they stood. As the wind swept by, their fists were already colliding.

"Sorry, Ruri, this time you can't use your Sharingan. Although it seems unfair, you set the rules yourself, so I'll definitely win."

Hakushi caught Ruri's slender leg as she kicked over, a confident smile on his face as he kept his eyes closed.

"Has nobody told you that defying your superiors comes with heavy consequences?"

"All I know is that a man can't always be on the bottom!"

He had the soul of an adult inside, yet for two years he'd been getting beaten by an eight-year-old girl.

It could be said that successfully overcoming Ruri once was one of his greatest life aspirations.

"Such a pointless ego!"

Ruri snorted coldly, but her expression turned serious.

Though she had always kept Hakushi under control, Hakushi's growth rate was rapid, always trailing just behind her, giving her a constant sense of impending surpass.

Most importantly, Hakushi did not dedicate all his energy to training. Part of his concentration was on research.

If she weren't careful, he might really succeed in defying her.

Hakushi knew that if he and Ruri actually fought, he wouldn't easily gain an advantage.

Especially regarding Chakra, Hakushi's wasn't abundant enough to waste frivolously, whereas Ruri was different. As a prodigy of the Uchiha Race, awakening the Sharingan catapulted her Chakra into rapid growth.

This marked the greatest distinction between Blood Marked Ninja and ordinary ninja.

Ninjas with bloodlines are truly remarkable.

Ninjas with bloodlines who are also diligent are more so.

Sure enough, as Hakushi contemplated ways of winning, a grip on his shoulder led to a swift shoulder throw, flipping over with his arms locked behind, feeling Ruri's soft form sitting upon his back, pinning him down.

"..."

Hakushi opened his eyes, filled with humiliation, once again pinned down.

When would a transmigrator genuinely rise?

In the end, Ruri still helped the defeated Hakushi clean up.

A sharp tongue but a soft heart.

Ignoring Ruri's somewhat insensitive tone, her personality was quite gentle...probably?
