Chapter 12 - 12—Stalking prey

The day closed almost too quickly for Noah. He was actually enjoying going to school. It was a novel change from the grim life he lived before he transmigrated into this body. But there was a lot he had to do today.

Like finding Isaac Grave.

The former enforcer had taught Noah how to shoot, only for Noah to put a bullet in him before dying.

Isaac wasn't as close to Noah as Pierre had been, but he still grew up beside the bastard and went through life and death situations with him. He unconsciously touched his abdomen; the scar was gone in this life, but he took a bullet there in his past life.

And Isaac was the one that saved his life back then. He had a strange connection to the mob and his former associates.

Like Pierre.

The thought that Pierre was still alive in this world was strangely scary to him. Like his former handler would remember how Noah killed him in their past lives and come for him.

It was strange considering the fact that Noah was sure he could beat Pierre in a fight.

Especially with his new powers.

But there was an uncomfortable part of him that felt sick when he killed Pierre. It wasn't like Dalton or Georgie. Pierre had raised him since his parents killed themselves, and despite being partially responsible for their death, Pierre had become a sort of role model for him.

He sent a text to Fara about how he would be busy today so she should go home by herself. He had some hunting to do, and he would do it far outside his territory.

First he took a cab downtown, then a train into the city, where. Noah continued looking through supernatural stories online. But strangely there were fewer stories about supernatural creatures in this world.

Someone suppressing this info was the first thing that came to mind.

After all, this was power, and where there was power there would be people trying to control it. But he would follow that thread later.

The train's telecom buzzed and an unintelligible voice came through. Anyone not from this city wouldn't know that this was their stop. the doors opened with a pneumatic hiss and he got off.

He was immediately swallowed into the crowd and rolled along with them to the exit of the underground station.

Some things in the city were the same; the crowded streets, the furiously honking cars, and the huge billboards advertising sports games.

But some things were different.

He visited a deli that he used to frequent a lot in his past life. It was a front for hiding cash and drugs, the owner wasn't a made man so Noah didn't plan to kill him.

But instead of finding the usual clientele at the shop, he found a lot of unfamiliar faces. After scoping out the place, he decided to order a sandwich.

"Philly cheesesteak please," Noah said, maintaining eye contact. "How's your sister?"

The owner, Sal, did a double take at Noah's words.

"I don't have a sister."

"Ohh, sorry, wrong person," Noah said quickly and stepped aside to wait for his order.

The fact that Sal didn't answer that question meant he didn't know the other basic codes.

Meaning he might not be an associate in this world. But that didn't make sense to Noah: Sal's deli was a good location to avoid cops and connect the lines of distribution.

He got his sandwich and left the shop, lurking on the streets as he ate, watching his back for people following him. After a couple minutes of searching he finally found what he was looking for.

He was sitting on a bench, watching a grocery store across the street while shopping online for clothes and texting Fara. While he waited his mind drifted towards smaller things.

Like the ghost girl he met at that park. He ought to go back and do some more training with her, and maybe finally find her body. Because he was sure the girl was killed and buried in the park.

Other things plagued his mind too, like how his family might get dragged into his vendetta.

This was looking bigger than he expected. Supernatural groups and hunters stalked the night and the mob itself might be one big freak show.

The sky darkened and a street lamp beside him flickered on. He looked up at it wondering if he was being irrational, but he couldn't give up. He couldn't silence the hate that was burning under his skin

He just needed to be more careful. Sighing, he raised his head and peered through the glass windows of the grocery store, then a man at the counter caught his attention.

The man grabbed a brown bag off the counter and the cashier just pretended not to notice.

When the man stepped out, he stuffed the bag into his black leather jacket and started walking away.

Noah got up slowly and crossed the busy street with his hands in his pockets.

He put down his hoodie as he followed the man, revealing his face so didn't set off his prey's nerves.

He followed the man to an apartment complex then walked into an alleyway and got behind a trash can.

Then he held his breath and then left his body.

His ghost form's flaming head flickered like burning shadows in the night. He went intangible entirely except one leg, before sticking a head through the wall of the apartment. It was an empty toilet.

He passed his intangible foot through the wall and made it tangible before it touched the tiled floor. Then he made the other leg intangible and brought it into the toilet.

He then repeated this process of peeking through walls till he got to the main lobby. He waited for a moment and listened with his sharp ears.

A door clicked shut above, maybe on the third floor.

He waited till the coast was a bit clear then crossed the lobby and walked through the walls into someone's room. All the cameras might catch were a pair of shoes walking on their own.

The moment he invaded the apartment he was greeted by the loud voices of an arguing couple.

"You never listen to me! I told you to get this shit done before Friday!"

"I was busy, okay? I'm the only one that works in this house after all."

Noah ignored their argument and walked through their bathroom wall. He looked up at the ceiling, exhaling as he prepared to jump. He lowered his knees and took off with as little force as possible.

The tiles under his feet still cracked loudly as his intangible body passed through the ceiling.

He made it two stories up with the leap, full body passing through the first roof, then only half making it past the second as he started losing momentum.

He quickly made his hands tangible and caught the floor of the second-floor bathroom he was in. Then he raised his entire body and made it tangible.

For a moment, he thanked the heavens that no one was in those toilets when he came in, even though he used his enhanced hearing to check.

It would have been really awkward.

From outside the bathroom though, he could hear someone moving through the apartment.

He took in a breath then walked through the bathroom walls into the room.
