Chapter 74: Divergence
The warriors of the Astartes are born for war, and their reunion with Erda would only last a little over a month before they must part again.
As Omega departed, he looked at the woman with some relief that she was immortal and wouldn't grow old and die in a few decades.
Dressed in a black robe, Erda stood on the street, sunlight streaming down her face, watching Omega leave and disappear from sight with a smile.
Omega, who had just returned to the fortress, saw Alpharius standing alone at the entrance. Somewhat puzzled, he went up to greet him, but Alpharius only glanced at him and nodded.
Alpharius could clearly sense that Omega had been in a good mood for the past month, but he refrained from following him out of curiosity to find out Omega's secrets.
Ten warships passed through the Warp Gates near Pluto and disappeared into the solar system.
The structures built by hundreds of billions of humans appeared so tiny in the solar system, and countless warships and aircraft seemed like small meteorites when viewed against the vastness of the Milky Way galaxy.
On the planet Sophis, a mature and stable Forge World, the flagship in the docked starport was rapidly receiving information about the Alpha Sector.
Within this star system, information transmission was convenient and required no face-to-face interaction; direct communication was sufficient.
Intergalactic communication was extremely troublesome. Although Astropaths could facilitate communication, they were, in a sense, long-term resources. Every piece of Warp navigation data was extremely valuable, making it impractical to use them to receive large amounts of information.
On the flag bridge, Alpharius and Omega quickly read the information, both looking pleased. Clearly, the Alpha Sector was developing well.
With a population exceeding hundreds of billions, the Mechanicus had invested heavily in infrastructure development in recent years, enabling the stable implementation of Omega's policies on various planets.
As a result, the population had been steadily increasing.
While the Alpha Legion's death toll in overseas campaigns might be high, it became relatively manageable when spread across a hundred planets, as each world could withstand casualties.
In terms of population, resources, technology, and other factors, the Alpha Sector could sustain the Alpha Legion's 3,000 warships for a long time. After decades of integration, the entire sector had developed a mature administrative system.
After reviewing the intelligence, Alpharius looked at Omega and finally spoke his mind.
"The Alpha Sector has been so successful. I want to spread our systems and experiences to other planets of the Empire, replacing those backward and barbaric systems and making them more progressive and civilized as well."
"If all the star sectors of the entire Empire could be like the Alpha Sector, it's unimaginable how powerful the Empire would become!"
"The Emperor's dream of making humanity great can surely be realized, right, Omega?"
Omega, who was standing nearby, immediately understood Alpharius's idea upon hearing this: he wanted to extend the political system of the Alpha Sector across the entire human empire.
He knew all too well what this meant; it was nothing short of a revolution sweeping across the empire.
The human empire was currently suffering heavy losses due to the Great Crusade, and Alpharius's actions could easily lead to internal strife if not handled carefully.
Omega thought for a moment, then said softly,
"Given the Emperor's wisdom, he must have already considered how to govern the empire. I suggest we first explain the political systems and experiences we've discovered to the Emperor. Then, the Emperor and Malcador will be able to consider how to govern the empire more carefully."
Alpharius was surprised that Omega did not immediately agree and shook his head.
"Malcador doesn't care what the systems are on the countless planets of the Empire. The Emperor is too busy. We can't just wait around like this."
"With you by my side, nothing is impossible. We will change the political systems of planets, little by little, just as we have in the past, freeing them from barbarity and backwardness."
Looking at Alpharius, whose eyes shone with hope and ideals, Omega realized for the first time that his brother was not the highly realistic and cold-hearted man he had imagined. In fact, he was quite idealistic.
The Emperor held immense significance for Alpharius, and he wished to help the Emperor realize that great dream.
But Alpharius was too naive. They did not rule this empire, but by the Emperor and Malcador. There were more than a dozen other Legions like theirs, which meant that Alpharius's ideology only represented his personal views.
Even if the system were brought to other planets, there was no corresponding industrial and social environment to support its implementation.
Omega hadn't been ignoring things all these years. Implementing a highly advanced political system on a backward planet was destined to fail. The planetary environment would force humans to abandon the advanced system and adopt a simpler one, as the latter was better suited to their survival.
Omega and his companion were also unable to command the headquarters of the Mechanicus to cooperate with them. Reforming the entire empire's system required the Emperor's leadership.
Omega pondered deeply, "This is a difficult task, but we can plant the seeds of the succession system. When the Emperor has time to reform it, these seeds will sprout and grow into a great tree."
"We're truly brothers! We're on the same page. Let's sow lots of seeds, just like before," Alpharius said cheerfully.
After reaching an agreement, the two began selecting planets from the human empire's star map.
The two then disagreed on the scope, with Alpharius wanting to spread the seeds of the hierarchy throughout the entire human empire.
However, Omega only intended to concentrate his efforts in the Medias and Coranno star sectors, which were relatively close to the Alpha Sector.
The three-star sectors were arranged in a strip formation in the sky, with the Medias Sector at the center. These two sectors had once been conquered by the Alpha Legion and had priority in their development.
Alpharius gazed at his scattered points of light across the vast star field, like sesame seeds scattered everywhere, but fell silent when he looked at Omega's two star sectors.
Alpharius calmly looked at Omega.
"Roboute Guilliman's Five Hundred Worlds is excellent, and his war achievements are considerable, but do you know why Guilliman is so controversial and not well-liked among the many Primarch brothers?"
"Why?" Omega asked in surprise.
Alpharius said calmly, "Because everyone knows that Guilliman's heart is only set on his Macragge and the Five Hundred Worlds. In Guilliman's eyes, Ultramar is more important than the vast Imperium."
"He has been diligently managing the Five Hundred Worlds, but he doesn't care much about the other worlds of the empire."
"We are all sons of the Emperor, and the entire human empire is the realm we will govern in the future, not merely a few star sectors."
"In my heart, the Alpha Sector is part of the Empire. I am considering the Emperor and the future of the Empire, not just my own legion's sector. Do you understand?"
At this moment, both Primarchs became aware of their inner differences and realized that they were not entirely in sync.
Alpharius had been with the Emperor since his rediscovery, and in his eyes, the entire empire was a natural progression of his duty.
But Omega was different. Ever since Alpharius had rediscovered him, he had been fighting on the frontier.
On Terra, he had only one acquaintance: Erda. Everything there was unfamiliar, and he had no sense of belonging.
Omega realized that Alpharius's secret revolution within the empire's borders would cause serious problems in the future, but he could not deny the other's ideals.
Perhaps only a near-divine being like the Emperor could forcibly deny Lorgar's beliefs and ideals, but logically speaking, Omega knew that the destruction of Monarchia would have endless consequences, and something terrible would definitely happen.
Omega, not wanting to argue, proposed, "Our legion will suffer heavy casualties in the decades-long war against the Orks. I will focus on developing the Medias Sector to mitigate the risks."
"The manpower and resources of two-star sectors will support your plans in other star sectors. Let's await the Emperor's institutional reforms together."
Alpharius was silent for a moment, then asked, unable to understand.
"Why are you only willing to stay in two or three-star sectors and unwilling to open your heart to the entire Empire? The territories of the Imperium of Man are much, much larger than the Alpha Sector."
"I hope you, my brother, won't be the next Roboute Guilliman. Your heart should be filled with the entirety of human civilization."
