An unknown amount of time later I opened my eyes with my face firmly pressed against the cold cobblestone floor.
I'm alive.
Waking up alive after failing to kill the Alpha surprised me. I didn't think that the werewolves would be able to resist the thrill of finishing me.
My muscles screamed as I pushed myself into a sitting position. But the moment I looked up, I noticed that I wasn't alone.
On the other side of the iron door sat a handsome figure. The luxurious black robe that he was wearing casually made him appear regal, like a true ruler, but the look in his eyes was colder than ice.
A smirk crept across my face as I leaned against the dungeon wall. "And what do I owe the pleasure of a visit from the Alpha?"
There was no longer any reason to hold back. I knew it was only a matter of time before they killed me.
I met his gaze as I waited for his response. Unlike last night, today his eyes were a very deep, unsettling blue..
He slowly reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out a very familiar spray bottle. "I found something very interesting in your belongings," he said, spinning it around in his hand.
My smile grew wider. I realized why they were keeping me alive.
"You should just kill me. I'm not going to tell you anything," I spat.
His eyes darkened. "Are you so eager to die?"
The words were spoken in a surprisingly calm manner. It was only then did I notice the bandages around my wrists.
He'd even gone so far as to tend my wounds?
It was laughable to think that they felt like they could get any information out of me. I would never betray my people.
"It's for your own good, Alpha. I might just find a way out of here and kill you first," I said.
"Kill me? Just like you tried last night? You can't kill me," he replied, the sarcasm barely hidden.
Anger bubbled inside of me."Who knows what might happen in the future? It could be your greatest regret."
He stood up and walked over to the iron gate that separated us. "Watch your words, human. I might just grant you your wish."
His piercing gaze sent a shiver down my spine. I could feel the raw power behind his threatening words. But I didn't look away. Instead, I kept my gaze firm, challenging him with my subtle defiance.
"It seems you need more time to fully understand the position you're in. I will come back when you're more inclined to talk."
"Don't bother. I'll never speak."
He placed the spray bottle carefully into the pocket of his robe before turning to leave. "We'll see."
I watched him vanish into the darkness of the dungeon hallway. The few torches that hung every few feet weren't enough to fully illuminate the surroundings.
Shortly after the Alpha left, two more werewolves walked over to keep guard over my cell. They were both very tall and imposing, but avoided making eye contact with me.
With the flickering light of the torches I took a look around my cell. Everything about it looked medieval. The stone walls and floors showed many signs of age with numerous small cracks. Even the heavy iron door was almost fully rusted.
The floor was strewn with dirt and smaller chunks of broken stone. My eyes darted from the pile of small rocks to the heads of the two guards in front of my cell.
I could probably knock them both out if I could throw a rock hard enough.
But I knew I couldn't attempt it yet. To throw a rock at high speed, I would have to use my wrists...
I glanced at the bandages around my wrists. A bitter, unfamiliar herbal scent rose from beneath the cloth. It all felt primitive — whatever they'd used, I doubted the effects would be worth the effort.
If I were back home, this kind of injury would be fixed in a day or two. Here, I would most likely have to wait a few weeks before they were usable again.
The only problem was that I wasn't sure how long they were willing to keep me alive. Thanks to the Alpha's visit, I knew they were interested in trying to get information out of me. That would buy me at least a few days, but after that, I wasn't sure.
I need to make a plan. What if they resort to torturing me?
Torture was unlikely, but not a guaranteed no. It just depends on how badly they want the information, and how well I can string them along.
As soon as I was healed enough to hold my own, I would try to escape. And this time, there was no doubt in my mind. I would kill the Alpha.
I looked around the cell a bit more to try and find any other possible exits. There was a small iron grate above me, but it was too small for me to squeeze through even if I found a way to get rid of the iron bars.
None of the cracks in the walls were large enough for me to get through, however there was a possibility that the wall itself was unstable due to the wear.
I would have to find a way to distract the guards if I want a chance at breaking through the wall. Otherwise, my actions would make too much noise.
After inspecting every inch of the cell, I closed my eyes. Nothing could be done right now anyway, so it was best to focus on recovery.
Maintaining my sitting position, I quickly fell asleep. My last thoughts before I drifted off were about the Alpha. The way everything about him screamed raw power was unlike anything I've ever experienced. It was frightening.
It made sense as to why I was sent on this mission. Someone as powerful as that would easily overwhelm even the best hunters.
My lips couldn't help but curve up into a smile and I pictured Mason. He was considered the strongest hunter of our generation.
I wouldn't mind if the Alpha tore that cocky smile from his face.
