Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Kira POV,

I'm awoken by a sharp pain in my ribs. And voices asserting my ears.

"Quickly prep an OR…"

"She's losing blood…"

I could feel a rush around me, people shouting, machines beeping, but I could not see a thing. Everywhere was dark.

I felt my body move from one surface to another…what is happening?

The last thing I remember is arriving here in Alaska. A driver picked me up from the airport, and the next moment he was out of the car. Which was still moving on the highway.

The car collided with another, and I was sent tumbling along with it. Am I dead? Is that why everywhere is dark?

I wanted to ask, but my throat felt clogged, and no words came out. My head turned dizzy from everything around me, and my brain succumbed to the darkness.

For how long I was out, I had no idea…but when I regained consciousness, that same darkness shrouded me. "Nod your head, miss, if you see this." An old, gruff voice sounded beside my ears.

"What about this? Do you see it?" Came the voice again.

I saw nothing…maybe my eyes are closed… I blink rapidly, but the darkness remains. "What's happening? Why is everywhere dark?" My voice sounded hoarse to my ears.

"Hello, miss. I'm Doctor Randy." The person answered, "Hi, doctor, can you explain what's happening to me?" A cold feeling gripped my chest when he introduced himself. I would rather not think of anything negative…it's better I remain positive.

"You were involved in a fatal accident and rushed here. The doctors did their best, and you will be on your feet anytime soon. But—"

"But what?" My heart rate quickened at his words.

"Your eyesight was damaged during the accident, and unfortunately there was nothing to be done about it."

"So you trying to tell me that I'm blind?"

"Yes," he replied.

This must be a cruel joke or a bad dream. I must be asleep; that explains the darkness. All I have to do is just wake up, and the nightmare will be gone.

Opening my eyes, the darkness remained… I squint them but still the same result. No…no…no…" It can't be real.

"Is there no way to fix it, doctor? Maybe surgery… I would pay no matter how much it cost, please."

I can't be blind, no…it can't happen. What would I do? Who would take care of me?

Dave's not by my side, and I have no friends or family.

"To fix your eyes, we have to find corneas that match yours, and unfortunately…" the doctor began saying but was called by another voice. "Doctor, your attention is needed." The person spoke.

"What happened?" Came Doctor Randy's voice.

"The other patient does not look good. She wants to speak with you."

"Please rest, miss; I'll check on you later."

With that the whole room became quiet, save for the occasional beeping of a machine.

I'm shrouded in both darkness and silence.

Not for long, though…as the sound of footsteps, followed by familiar voices, filled the room.

" This isn't what I planned, but it still a good outcome." Sarah's voice rang out. "At least now you would know better than to threaten me."

So it was her…all this is because of her. "Why?" My voice sounded weaker than I had intended.

"Why?" She asked, "I had my eyes on Dave for years; he was going to be mine. But you suddenly entered the picture, and he picked you over me. An ugly pumpkin."

"But you guys are together. He is yours now, so why this?" She already got what she wanted, Dave. Then why go after me? What did she intend to get from destroying me?

"You touched what's mine; because of you, he came to me late." She shouted.

"What nonsense are you spouting? When Dave asked me out, he was single." I yelled back at her. She's a lunatic.

"No…it was not his will. You seduced him. You diverted his attention from me. This is the price you pay for it."

I wanted to laugh or cry. But none was forthcoming. Should I scream at her? What should I do?

I was at a loss.

"Stay away from me and Dave and LA if you don't want to lose more than your eyesight." After she was done, I heard the clicking of heels, indicating her leave.

Immediately she left, and hurried footsteps filled my ears. "Miss, there's good news." Came the gruff voice of the doctor.

"What is it?" Sarah's earlier presence, totally thrown out the window, my heart leap in expectation.

"There's someone willing to donate their corneas."

"How?" Confusion clouded my mind.

"There's a patient at the hospital who heard about your case and is willing to donate." The doctor spoke.

"Wait a minute. This person is clearly still alive." A person has only two corneas, one for each eye. If they're willing to donate theirs to me, does that mean they want to become blind? Or is the doctor trying to prank me?

"Yes, miss, not for long. The patient in question is a pregnant woman who was also involved in the accident." My heart skipped a beat at his words.

"How's she?" Because of me, an innocent pregnant woman is fighting for her life.

"Not good. And that's where you come in."

"How?"

"Miss Lydon wants to speak to you herself." The doctor spoke instead.

Nodding my head, I agreed. I felt arms wrap around me…one moment I'm midair, and the next I'm in a chair, being wheeled to some place unknown to me.

Not up to two minutes later, we stopped moving. "I'll let you two talk."

"Hello, I'm Marie Lydon." A soft voice introduced itself.

"Hi, I'm Katherine Grey." I introduced myself back. It felt weird speaking to someone I could not see.

"I know this will sound weird and stupid, but still, I need you to help me." Her voice was weak and pleading.

"I would love to…but I can't, as you can see I'm blind and in no state to help myself, let alone anyone else."

"I know. According to the doctors, our corneas are a match. I'm willing to give them to you if you would please help me."

"Why would you want to give up your sight? I heard you are pregnant. Don't you want to be able to see your baby when it's born?" My confusion only amplified.

"That would be my dream; unfortunately, I would not be able to live long enough to see that moment." Her voice sounded sad. "I have stage three cancer, and with the accident, it's a miracle I'm still breathing right now."

I was short of words. She continued speaking nevertheless. "There's no hope for me anymore. And I don't want my baby to face the same fate. That's why I need you."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Conceive my baby."

Her words sent shock waves running through my body. Conceive her baby. What the hell does she mean by that? "I don't understand."
