Chapter 6 - The Mask Cracks

Elena stood in front of the tall mirror, trying to steady her breath.

Her reflection stared back; calm, composed, and determined but beneath that stillness, a storm brewed.

It had taken her five years to come back.

Five years to build a new life, piece by piece, after the world she knew had crumbled.

Now, all that time led her here.

To Maya Johnson.

The woman she'd once called sister.

The woman who'd smiled as she watched her fall.

Elena slipped into her navy coat and picked up her bag. "Tonight," she whispered, "the lies end."

At the Cole Industries building, Adrian was pacing his office. The lights from the city poured in through the glass walls, reflecting off the polished floors like ripples of silver. He hadn't been able to think straight since uncovering the truth.

He wanted to storm into Maya's office, confront her, demand an explanation, but a part of him held back. He'd built his reputation on control. Losing it now wouldn't bring Elena peace.

It would only bring chaos.

Still, the thought of Maya sitting a few floors below him, acting like nothing happened, made his blood boil.

Sophie knocked softly and stepped inside. "Sir, you asked for updates on the internal audit?"

Adrian nodded. "Yes. What did you find?"

"There's evidence of unauthorized transfers during the same period the leak happened. Multiple shell accounts, fake vendor invoices… all linked to Maya's division."

He exhaled sharply. "So it's her."

Sophie hesitated. "There's something else. One of the files is encrypted—with your digital signature."

Adrian froze. "Mine?"

"Yes, sir. It looks like she cloned your credentials to approve those transfers."

For a moment, silence hung heavy in the room. Then Adrian's expression hardened.

"Prepare security," he said quietly. "She's not walking out of this building tonight."

Maya's office was all elegance; soft lighting, minimalist décor, the faint scent of jasmine in the air. She was sitting behind her desk, scrolling through her phone when a familiar voice cut through the quiet.

"I didn't expect to find you here so late."

Maya looked up, startled.

Elena stood by the door, framed by the warm light of the corridor. Her expression was unreadable.

"Elena," Maya breathed, masking her surprise with a smile. "I didn't know you still had access to this floor."

"I know a few people who owe me favors," Elena said, stepping inside. "We need to talk."

Maya gestured toward a chair. "By all means. Sit."

Elena didn't. She crossed the room, eyes sharp. "You forged the memo. You used my project, my files, then sold them to Lennox for a payout."

Maya's smile didn't waver. "That's a bold accusation."

"I have proof," Elena said, pulling a folder from her bag and placing it on the desk. "Emails. Transfers. Your signature. You didn't just betray me, Maya. You betrayed Adrian too."

For the first time, Maya's mask cracked.

A flicker of something; fear, guilt, or anger, crossed her face.

"You think you know everything," Maya said softly. "But you don't."

"Then tell me," Elena snapped. "Tell me why."

Maya leaned back in her chair, her calm returning like a tide. "Do you really want the truth? Fine. You were never supposed to get that project. Adrian gave it to you because he was sleeping with you."

Elena froze. "That's a lie."

"Is it?" Maya's voice dripped with venom. "He defended you in every meeting. He risked millions for your idea, ignored every warning. Everyone saw what was happening, how he looked at you. And when things went wrong, I was the one cleaning up the mess."

Elena's hands trembled. "You ruined my life over jealousy?"

Maya's expression darkened. "I built my life from nothing. No family, no privilege. Everything I earned, I had to fight for. And then you walked in; brilliant, beautiful, the CEO's favorite and you didn't even realize how easy you had it."

"That doesn't justify what you did," Elena whispered.

Maya's lips curved into a brittle smile. "Justify? No. But it made sure I survived."

Outside the glass door, a tall shadow moved silently.

Adrian had arrived minutes earlier, security discreetly behind him—but the moment he heard their voices, he stopped.

Every word hit him like a blow.

He'd thought Maya's betrayal would be purely corporate; numbers, money, ambition.

He hadn't realized it had been personal. Twisted with envy, love, and obsession.

He pushed open the door.

"Maya."

Her head snapped up, and the color drained from her face. "Adrian"

He walked in, his gaze cold. "Save it. I've heard enough."

Elena turned toward him, shock flashing across her face. "You're here?"

"I had to see this for myself." His voice was low, dangerous. "All those years I blamed her—you let me believe she was guilty."

Maya rose from her chair, trembling slightly. "Adrian, please"

He slammed the folder onto the desk. "You cloned my credentials. You sold the plans. You destroyed the woman I" He stopped himself, jaw tightening. "You destroyed everything."

Maya's eyes glistened. "I did it for you."

The room went still.

Elena's breath caught. "What?"

Maya turned toward her. "You think he loved you, Elena? He didn't. You were a distraction. He needed focus, and you made him weak. I had to save him from you."

Adrian's voice turned to ice. "You didn't save me. You broke me."

Maya's lips parted, but no sound came out.

He turned away, disgust and regret clouding his face. "Security will escort you out. Legal will handle the rest."

Maya took a step forward, desperation seeping through her voice. "Adrian, please, I did it because I"

"Enough." His tone cut like a blade.

She stopped. Tears welled in her eyes, but for the first time, they didn't look innocent, they looked dangerous. "You'll regret this," she whispered. "Both of you."

Adrian didn't answer. He simply walked out, and Elena followed, her heart pounding so loud she could barely hear anything else.

Outside the building, the night air hit them like a wave of cold relief.

Neither spoke for a moment. The tension between them was thick, fragile, electric.

Finally, Elena said quietly, "You believed her once. What's stopping you from believing her again?"

Adrian turned to her, his eyes heavy with regret. "Because this time, I saw the truth."

For a moment, their gazes locked—two souls bound by pain, misunderstanding, and something far deeper neither dared to name.

Then Elena looked away. "It's not over yet. Someone else was texting her. Someone higher up."

"I'll find them," Adrian said. "We both will."

And as they stood under the flickering streetlight, the storm that had started years ago began to shift.

Not toward peace,

but toward something more dangerous.

Something like love reborn through fire
