Jane jumped into the sky, soaring hundreds of meters above the vast complex city of steel, concrete, and glass. She glanced toward the bank, surrounded by tall buildings and small shops. In front of the bank were police vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and officers with various guns aimed at the entrance. Inside was nothing but trouble.
She could hear the high-pitched wail of sirens and the occasional burst of radio static, followed by a voice. Her eyes landed on a man in a tan coat with a badge around his neck and a black bulletproof vest labeled "NEGOTIATOR." He held a black microphone in his hand. Jane caught the grim expression on the negotiator's face, which matched the looks of the other officers around him.
Jane acrobatically made her way to the bank's rooftop and examined the situation from above. She peered through the paned glass below and saw a group of armed men and women in tailored black Italian suits and brown fur monkey masks. Two unarmed women had purple electricity crackling around their arms and feet, while the men were armed with high-tech guns and advanced tactical gear.
A significant number of hostages lay face down on the bank's polished brown wooden floor, while the pregnant women sat hunched over and weeping. All of the victims had their hands bound with black zip ties behind their backs. The armed men patrolled the area, ensuring no one moved and keeping a watchful eye for any suspicious activity.
Jane knew she couldn't take them all out instantly without causing chaos. Her speed, while as fast as human thought and reaching up to 268 mph, wasn't instantaneous. It was faster than a commercial bullet train at 200 mph, but not enough to clear a large group head-on without risking innocent lives.
'This is going to be a bit difficult, but I'll manage... Somehow,' she thought grimly. If Jane had continued her training with the Demon Method, it would've been a different story, one that would have made today's problem trivial. She knew that but didn't dwell on it.
Knowing she was a bit outmatched, Jane had to adapt to the situation. Her mind was filled with tactical knowledge and an understanding of physics. Using both, she planned to execute her task perfectly without causing unintended consequences.
Jane opted for a stealthy approach and silently slipped through the bank's open window. Her next moves required silence, finesse, and deadly precision.
She positioned herself near the ceiling, using the thick golden rails bolted above, which could hold up to 800 pounds with ease. They supported her weight without issue and provided a stable vantage point to observe the situation below. She carefully studied their lines of sight, obstacles, and movement patterns, memorizing every detail.
The bank's power was out, and the only light source was the pale moonlight above. The darkness of the interior provided her visual shelter against the numerous pairs of eyes inside the bank's white-painted walls.
From her perch above, surrounded by darkness and shadow, Jane watched closely as the scene unfolded below, waiting like a curious predator. She noticed the two women talking and listened carefully, seeing their purple electricity flicker with their conversation. She analyzed it as emotionally focused, assuming that if their emotions were heightened, their power would either go out of control or become stronger.
Two women: one sat in a chair with her feet resting on the gray desk, watching the hostages and their roaming subordinates. Her sister leaned against the desk, back turned to the scene, and watched as their men stuffed large stacks of cash from the bank's open vault into black duffel bags. She stood beside her sister, who remained seated.
"What is Adeline's theory of time? Why is it so important in our endeavors?"
Ace, still standing, only glanced at her sister.
'Another speech, greeaat~' Ace thought, but said nothing. Speaking would only irritate her sister, and she didn't want to face that cold glare or in this case her disapproved monkey glare.
Ace knew her sister's addiction to theatrics and could only sigh in acceptance.
"Humans dream of ultimate power not in terms of glory, riches, or strength, but godhood, even if they don't deserve it. Adeline's theory of time, building on and branching from Einstein's theory of relativity, gives us a clue on how to reshape our destiny," Syn said, moving her hands as she spoke to emphasize her words.
"I've heard this before. If we understand her theory and apply it to our electricity, we can control time." Ace danced her purple electricity between her fingers.
"Why bring it up now?" Ace sighed and turned to her sister, remembering a similar conversation a few weeks ago when they robbed a bank in Metropolis. That success was only possible because Superman was busy fighting a giant robot at the time.
"Call it inspiration." Syn lifted her head high with pride.
"I have a good feeling about this. Once we have everything we need, we'll move on to the next step of our plan," Syn said, crossing her arms as she thought about their next move.
"Nexus Corp is gonna have a rough time dealing with us," Ace said with a smile beneath her monkey mask.
"Although, that Jane girl would make a good bride for me, don't you think?" Ace imagined herself in a white suit with Jane beneath a white veil, wearing a lace bridal dress.
"First, we'll focus on the tasks ahead, then marriage."
Syn's eyes gleamed with determination. "Everything in this world has a predestined path, and everything has a design it must follow."
She paused for dramatic effect, while Ace rolled her eyes at her antics.
"In order for us to become gods, we must conquer divinity itself and make it our slave. Only then can we be truly free." Syn raised her hand, imagining a pure white sphere of light in her palm before closing her fist as if crushing it.
"Conquering gods? How noble," Ace said sarcastically.
"I set my sights on greatness and plan against failure," Syn replied with a nod. "It demands patience, ruthlessness, and the willingness to commit evil."
"I tend to go for the more impatient approach," Ace said, watching the electricity flow around her hand. "Act fast, be brave, and destroy anyone in your way. That's my motto, and it's kept me going to this day."
"That, and my rigorous planning. We'll both become gods, and then we'll be happy. I'm sure of it. Maybe we could even—" Syn stopped herself, shook her head, and whispered, "love is a cruel curse."
"I wonder what Mom would think of us now?" Ace said, pointing toward the men stealing money. "I can hear her now: 'You two are grounded for life,' with that godly mad expression on her face." Ace laughed softly at her own joke.
"I'd rather not think about what she'd say. The past is the past; it's best to leave it be." Syn leaned back in her chair, her eyes focusing on the pale moon shining through the glass above. An older woman with long black hair and tan, wrinkled skin smiling flashed through her mind, but only for a moment.
'No need for that,' Syn thought, closing her eyes as she regulated her breathing and took control of her emotions.
Unbeknownst to the duo and their gang, Jane was preparing to make her move.
There were a few gadgets lifted from her mother's lab that would help her against their endeavors. In her hand were small black spheres.
She placed them on the golden railing that she was perched upon, positioning them around the area where the criminals were located below, including the duo.
She pressed a red button on the small remote in her hand, and immediately the spheres opened a small hole and started to fill the area with dense, white, and harmless smoke.
As the smoke fell, the duo's goons reacted in panic.
"What's going on?"
"It's Batman! He's here!"
"Oh, this is bad!"
"I don't want my ass to be torn apart again."
"..."
"..."
"..."
The three men turned to him with bewildered expressions, though hidden by their masks. They collectively thought at the same time, 'Really? This isn't the time for one of your jokes!'
"What?"
Unfortunately for the trio, he wasn't joking, as Batman had punished him with a serious, brutal beating that had shattered his bottom into multiple pieces, indirectly of course. The only reason he could still walk was because of his slightly above-average healing factor. Though his body had mostly recovered, the psychological trauma remained, deeply ingrained in his soul.
Panic quickly subsided with Syn's calmness and focus.
"Everyone grab a partner and stay close. Keep your eyes on each other and the hostages. He won't attack freely if you do," Syn roared as the white smoke slowly closed off her view.
"Stick close to me," Syn said, standing next to her sister. "If he attacks, we do it together."
Ace nodded in agreement. The men at the vault stopped what they were doing and paired up, gripping their weapons tightly and watching each other's backs.
Meanwhile, the hostages let out a collective sigh of relief. Though a sense of fear gripped their collective hearts.
Syn didn't know if it was truly Batman who was attacking, as he mainly operated in Gotham City, but she couldn't take any chances and decided to stay on high alert.
Jane dropped from the golden railing and dashed around the complex at maximum speed with pure silence and deadly precision, using her superhuman senses to guide her effortlessly through the smoke-filled environment. She decapitated the first goon nearby with a hand chop and repeated this method constantly.
Meanwhile, as she attacked, she made sure they fell silently while taking their high-tech guns from their clutches to prevent them from firing when they died.
In sixty seconds, she had killed every one of Syn and Ace's men without them noticing and planned to use this time to quickly move the hostages outside the bank's entrance. There were a total of twenty-three.
She quickly knocked out the hostages with precise nerve strikes to silence their surprise and worry, then moved them as planned to the entrance, signaling the cops to approach and take away the unconscious hostages.
A few police officers tried to come in but found that the building's power had suddenly come on and metal shutters had locked down their entry.
"Thank you, Stella," Jane remarked, pressing two fingers against the temple of her black helmet.
"No problem, give them hell, you hear?" Stella radioed in, still worried about Jane's safety but encouraging her in her victory.
The sound of the metal shutters at the entrance put Syn and Ace on high alert, though they were still unaware of their dead men and freed hostages due to the smoke completely blocking their view.
The smoke quickly started to clear as the AC turned on, and the lights of the building flickered on simultaneously.
Syn and Ace noticed the many headless bodies of their men but saw that their enemy wasn't in the area.
Jane was once again perched on the golden railing, a goon's gun in her hand. It was a semi-auto assault rifle built by her company, but heavily limited due to the soft locks, which decreased its overall effectiveness against powerful superhumans.
However, Jane ordered Stella to unlock the soft locks and even overlock it, which for a normal person would tear their arms from their shoulders if they fired it.
Jane didn't plan on dragging out this fight as a two-on-one; she planned to end it quickly, and the gun was going to help her.
She aimed the muzzle at the pair and placed her finger on the trigger.
Syn noticed Jane's figure and the rifle in her hand. She placed a forcefield with her electricity before her and protected her sister. She ordered Ace to stay behind her and shoot a lightning bolt at Jane when she gave her the signal.
Ace nodded trusting her sister's plan.
'How cute,' Jane thought as her deranged smile widened further behind her black mask, 'but too bad.'
Jane pulled the trigger when Ace's head aligned with Syn. The gun in her hand recoiled, jerking away only slightly, but to a normal human it would have felt like getting kicked by a horse. She would have been thrown from her vantage point if not for her immense physical strength.
The bullet exited the muzzle in a spit of blue fire and a loud bang. It propelled through the air, blue electricity crackling around its casing. It moved like a blue comet, a color symbolizing hope. It pierced Syn's barrier, penetrated her skin and skull, and obliterated her brain before moving on to destroy the second head it hit, creating a sonic boom that echoed off the bank walls.
In the midst of that, the cops outside jumped and ducked behind their vehicles, guns ready, as they heard a loud gunshot resonate from the bank.
Jane dropped down from her position and ordered Stella to reactivate the gun's safety features so her traces wouldn't be traced back to her.
'Now onto my debut,' Jane thought as she walked out from the bank's entrance as the shutter were being pulled up by Stella's command. She held her hands high, mocking surrender while the cops aimed their guns at her, still wary if she was a hero or villain.
The voice module within her mask was set to high, making everyone hear her voice loud and clear.
Jane saw the police barricades and the reporters outside them, along with a group of people glancing and gossiping about tonight's events.
Her words rang out across the street, dramatic and mocking. "Call me Heretic. I guess you're welcome. I'll be protecting this city from now on."
Before the people and officers could ask her anything, as they had a lot of questions on their minds, Jane used the small black sphere resting between her fingers and dropped it on the ground. It created a large white smoke screen, and the cops rushed in afterward.
She quickly entered the bank, escaped through the window she had used before, and made her way to the rooftop. She leapt into the air. Silver cracks formed beneath her feet, and she used them to traverse through the air. She moved through the buildings around the bank as cover, heading toward the next criminal activity.
Her current record for taking down criminals was ten minutes, and she wanted to beat it.
She had all night to take down the criminals in the city.
Unknowingly, her actions would spark major drama with heroes and villains alike.
