Chapter 5: The Hunt
Aaron and the monster fall into the depths of the dungeon. Aaron, stunned, gets up from the floor.
"W-what happened?" Aaron rubs his head.
Aaron notices the monster, but the creature is desperately trying to climb up, wanting to return, but its attempts are in vain.
"W-why is it trying to climb up and not attacking me?" Aaron, out of fear and curiosity, stays to observe the monster.
After a few attempts to climb, the creature turns and stares intently at the young. It is determined to kill him. Noticing this, Aaron's legs tremble, and his face breaks out in a sweat.
"I must act!" Aaron activates his technique and quickly moves toward the monster, but the bulky creature manages to grab his arm.
"Shit!"
Aaron is lifted by the creature, but the young man uses his useless arm and, barely, manages to activate his technique and wound its face. Aaron falls to the ground.
"Damn it, I have to run away from this demon!"
Aaron, his arm now more screwed up from using the technique, begins to run. He heads down the long, endless hallway of the dungeon. The demon recovers from the attack and begins to pursue the boy.
"Do you think Aaron is okay, Safira?" asks Freya, with a whisper that denotes fear.
"I hope so. My brother, although he seems foolish, is not stupid; he knows very well how to act."
The two girls continue to delve deeper into the dungeon, searching for their companion. Suddenly, they find stairs going down.
"Alright, we have to go down…"
Meanwhile, Aaron continues running desperately and sees another room in the distance. Without hesitation, he enters. He manages to position himself behind the wall of the room. The bulky creature passes by and continues walking down the endless hallway of the dungeon.
"God, I think I managed to get rid of that…"
Looking at the place, he notices some small creatures, walking on all fours, but they seem terrified upon seeing Aaron.
"D-damn, if I bother them, they'll attack me…"
Aaron barely moves a foot when one of these little ones begins to shriek loudly. The other small creatures become agitated and do the same.
"Dammit!" Aaron has no choice but to go deeper into this room. The monsters attack Aaron, leaving several scratches on his legs.
The bulky monster hears this and heads towards where he heard the noises.
Finally, Aaron manages to hide behind a giant rock near the room.
"Please, don't let him come here!"
The monster, after a few seconds, arrives at the room where the young man is.
"Oh, God…" Aaron's mind is racing; he doesn't know what is going to happen. He feels as if the creature is breathing down his neck.
At that moment, one of the small creatures comes to where Aaron is hiding. It doesn't attack him and only watches him with curiosity.
"Get out of here, they're going to discover me," Aaron whispers to the small quadruped, but it doesn't even understand.
The large monster approaches the rock, sees the young man, and grabs him by the neck, lifting him off the ground. Aaron kicks and tries to punch it, but he can't even reach its face. His eyes close more and more from the suffocation caused by the monster.
Finally, he closes his eyes. But suddenly, the small quadruped monster bites the giant demon's leg. In pain, it releases Aaron. He finally manages to breathe, but doesn't have much time and gets up. Completely weak, he continues to run for his life. Aaron watches as the small one is disemboweled by the horned creature.
"Thank you very much, you are my savior."
Meanwhile, Safira and Freya continue trying to find their companion. They keep passing through the long, dark corridors of this horrendous dungeon. From afar, they manage to see someone.
"Master Porco!" shouts Freya. The two girls quickly head toward the dwarf.
"Huh? It's good that I found other people!" Porco replies.
"What happened to the team that was with you?" Safira asks him.
"Well, what happened was that when they heard the small tremor, they got scared and ran toward the exit."
"Speaking of which, the exit is sealed, possibly with Aetherian," says Freya.
"I suspected it; I felt a large amount of Aetherian when the tremor happened. It's as if this place has a life of its own; it must be the demon fragment," Porco runs his fingers through his beard.
"Aaron is lost; we are looking for him. He is in danger with a monster," Freya's voice denotes anxiety and worry.
"I see, this place is seriously very dangerous. We had only planned to investigate this dungeon a little. But there's no other option, let's hurry and find the young human."
Aaron continues to escape from the horned demon. After a long time escaping from the creature that is stalking him, he finds an area of the dungeon that is somewhat unusual. This area is alive; it has trees, grass, small rivers—it is a peaceful place.
"What is this place?" Aaron wonders, but he quickly hides again behind some rocks near a tree.
"I still don't understand anything…" Aaron sets aside his surroundings and begins to think: "Why did that monster try to climb up instead of attacking me?"
For a moment, Aaron seems to find the right answer. He remembered that in the place where there was a monster and a monster child, they seemed scared to see them: "Could it be that the monsters we found that were scared were its family? It was simply defending them," Aaron considers.
"That's absurd; how can beings like that feel love?" he answers himself.
"Although, that little one helped me. Maybe it realized that I was scared too, just like him. I don't understand anything," Aaron is now immersed in his thoughts, still unable to grasp everything that is happening.
"I feel sorry for that creature; it shouldn't have died, and yet when it sensed that I was afraid, it didn't hesitate to protect me. It truly saved my life."
Aaron continues to appreciate everything around him—all those trees that provide fresh air, the grass he manages to touch with his hand that moves delicately in the wind, those rivers with their relaxing sound. Aaron finally feels peace.
"This place is very nice; this dungeon feels like an entire ecosystem."
Aaron's peace is short-lived when the bulky monster arrives at this area. He hides further behind the giant rocks.
"To hell with it, I can't have a moment of peace!"
The big guy starts searching among the trees and the giant rocks. With every step the demon takes, Aaron feels a chill. The young man becomes more tense, his hands sweat, he swallows, while the monster gets closer and closer to him. It is now only a few steps away from finding him, the fearsome giant keeps approaching. Aaron breathes heavily, feeling a shiver run through his whole body. The creature is inches away from the rocks where the boy is hiding.
"Team, I found a very nice place, hurry up," a feline hybrid arrives at the greenish area, along with three other canines.
"What is that thing?!" one of the canine hybrids sees the giant creature from afar.
The big horned creature notices the presence of these invaders. It heads toward its prey.
"Dear God…" Aaron whispers, sticking his head out a little to see what is happening.
"Get away! Or we'll kill you!" the feline shouts at the monster, but it ignores them and continues approaching the team.
The hybrids' feet are trembling, their voices break; they are completely paralyzed. One of them tries to attack using his Aetherian, but the demon doesn't even flinch. It quickly grabs the one who attacked it by the neck and suffocates it to death. The body falls. The remaining three watch the body of their friend in horror.
"Son of a bi—" the half-cat approaches the monster with great speed and tries to attack, but he doesn't leave a single scratch. It grabs the cat's arm and tears it off. He screams with all his might.
Aaron, who is watching this, is horrified. He watches as that demonic creature tears apart the bodies of that team.
"It's my chance!" Aaron, with the little energy he has left, manages to activate his transparent Aetherian sword. He runs at full speed toward the monster that is still destroying the hybrids and manages to attack the monster's heels. It shrieks in pain and falls to the ground, unable to stand up.
"Your hunt is over!" Aaron runs toward the exit of the beautiful sanctuary, leaving the monster behind.
Meanwhile, Porco, Safira, and Freya walk through the large, dark hallways of this dungeon. In the distance, they see someone walking with difficulty.
"Aaron!" Safira manages to recognize her brother and runs toward him.
"He's alive!" Freya follows Safira.
"Brother! What happened? You're a mess!" his sister hugs him again, with great force.
"I'm a little wounded, but I'm fine. I finally see you again."
"Are you alright, young man?" says the dwarf Porco.
"Oh, Porco! Thank you for worrying about me!" Aaron smiles at him.
"Have this, boy, it's the last one I have left," Porco throws a potion and Safira manages to catch it.
"Why are you giving it to me? It could be useful to you," Aaron asks him.
"You were my students, even if only for a short time. Plus, I am the boss and the most experienced on this mission; it is my duty."
"Thank you very much!" the three friends say at the same time.
"What happened with the creature you fell with?" asks the elf Freya.
"It started chasing me to kill me, but I managed to escape from it. I couldn't kill it, so it might be coming back for me."
"Aaron, you should have said that sooner!" shouts Safira.
But she only said that when the horned creature appears again in front of them, now angrier because of the damage Aaron inflicted.
"Young ones, run! Try to take care of your friend; I'll handle the monster." Porco stands in front of the creature, determined to fight the devil in person.
"Porco, but it's too strong!" Aaron yells desperately.
"Shut up! It's my duty as leader to defend the young people. Hurry and get out, or you will die too!"
Safira and Freya grab Aaron by the arms and pull him away from the situation. Aaron says nothing.
"Brother, we'll give you the potion elsewhere, but first, we have to get out of here."
