ELENA POV
Isabella was awake when I entered her room, sitting up in bed with a tray of untouched food in front of her.
"Elena." She smiled when she saw me, and it still took my breath away, that she knew me, that she remembered. "I was wondering where you were. The nurses said you had visitors."
I sat in the chair beside her bed, trying to keep my expression neutral. She didn't need to know about the police. Not while she was still recovering.
"Just some business to handle. How are you feeling?"
"Tired. But better." She pushed the tray away.
"Mama, you need to rest"
"I need to remember." Her voice was firm. Urgent. "Elena, I can feel it. It's right there, just out of reach.
"Your brain is still healing. The doctors said"
"The doctors don't understand." She grabbed my hand. "Elena, I'm running out of time. I can feel it. Brighton knows I'm alive. He's been trying to kill me. He'll try again without hesitation."
"We have security. You're safe here."
