Chapter 44 — Crushed Again (Sad)

"It's Nannan."

Nannan's mother clearly hadn't noticed anything unusual about her posture with Huo Yuhao. She merely looked toward Jiang Nannan at the door and murmured vaguely.

"Tonight, Yuhao will be sleeping with me to treat the aftereffects."

"Aftereffects?"

Hearing that it was for treatment, Jiang Nannan's expression tightened instantly. She quickly glanced at Huo Yuhao.

"Are these aftereffects dangerous?"

"Uh…" Huo Yuhao's lips hesitated, fumbling for words. "Not… not that dangerous…"

Hearing his words, Jiang Nannan instinctively recalled how her mother had suddenly mentioned wanting a drink. Her heart stirred with an inkling of understanding, and she nodded at Huo Yuhao with a faint smile of gratitude.

"Yuhao, I really appreciate all the trouble you're taking."

"Uh, no, it's nothing."

The words were already on the tip of Huo Yuhao's tongue, but seeing Jiang Nannan's grateful gaze, he ultimately couldn't bring himself to speak. His mouth opened and closed repeatedly. After a moment, as if persuading himself, he let out a small, resigned sigh.

"You're welcome."

"Since you're staying here tonight, you should…?"

Jiang Nannan hesitated for a moment, as if recalling something, her cheeks subtly tinged with color. "You should… take a shower first?"

A few minutes later…

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Jiang Nannan arrived at the bathroom door and knocked lightly.

"Yuhao, did you bring a change of clothes?"

"I have some in my storage ring, don't worry."

Listening to the voice outside, Huo Yuhao felt a strange, inexplicable tension in the air.

This wasn't right.

How had a simple treatment turned into this?

Soon, the rustling of movement came from outside the door.

"Then I'll help you wash the clothes you changed out of."

"N-No, that's fine."

Huo Yuhao's lips twitched. "I'll just take them back tomorrow and wash them myself…"

Before he could finish, Jiang Nannan's soft laugh floated through the door.

"You've helped us so much; I should at least do something in return, right?"

As if anticipating Huo Yuhao's objection, she continued, "Don't say you haven't done much. I know how hard it is to treat my mother's illness."

"…."

Huo Yuhao fell silent, quietly scooping water from the wooden tub to rinse himself.

"Yuhao, you know… I actually feel lucky. Lucky to have met you at the medical hall."

Through the frosted bathroom door, Jiang Nannan seemed to open up, glancing at the stars outside the window as she spoke softly.

"Before this, I'd even inquired about a secluded sect that could save my mother… but the price they demanded was myself."

Huo Yuhao's eyes flickered, his mind suddenly piecing things together.

Though she hadn't named the sect, recalling Xu Sanshi's relationship with Jiang Nannan in his previous life, he finally understood.

"So you should know… how much your help means to me."

Jiang Nannan paused, her tone serious. "I owe you my life."

"My price wasn't that high. Those gold coins were more than enough."

"Really?"

Hearing Huo Yuhao's resigned words, Jiang Nannan's lips curved into a faint smile.

"Then I'll just keep it in my heart."

She moved on from the topic, her voice softening. "By the way, Yuhao, if possible… could you come visit my home more often?"

"Hm?"

Huo Yuhao was curious, noting how her words echoed her mother's earlier phrasing. "Why?"

"My mother seems to like you. Seeing her laugh like she did at dinner today… I've never seen her so happy all these years raising me. So if you have the time, I'd like you to come over more often. Of course, I'll compensate you."

"No need for compensation."

Huo Yuhao tugged at the corner of his mouth and rose to towel off.

"I'm actually happy just to have a place to grab a meal. I'll come by often."

Back in the bedroom, Nannan's mother, as if long anticipating his arrival, thoughtfully lifted the covers, her gaze lingering on Huo Yuhao.

The sensation was strange—strangely intense. When Huo Yuhao touched her earlier, her body burned with heat, yet she hadn't felt discomfort. But during his brief absence while showering, every inch of her felt restless.

Less than ten minutes of waiting, and she was already growing impatient.

Huo Yuhao, noticing Nannan's mother's hungry gaze, swallowed hard. After steadying himself, he finally crept into bed.

The moment he lay down, he felt the fiery warmth pressing against him, like a living pillow. Nannan's mother wrapped him completely in her arms.

Her nose unconsciously inhaled his scent, and a shiver of strange, thrilling sensation surged through her body. A faint, mosquito-like hum escaped her lips.

As her movements continued unconsciously, Huo Yuhao felt the playful jostle of her prominent chest against him, boldly demonstrating its presence.

The familiar, tormenting sensation from being at the Star Dou Great Forest at Zhang Lexuan's hands returned, and he felt like a fragile boat tossed amid a storm, helplessly enduring the crashing waves.

Sensing Huo Yuhao's restraint, Nannan's mother, slightly flushed and dazed, tilted her bra upward slightly, testing the waters.

"Do you want to… try it? Like when treating the illness?"

Creak—

"Mom, I'm back."

Huo Yun'er peeked out from the kitchen, making breakfast. Seeing Huo Yuhao, she exhaled in relief. Even as a spirit master, she couldn't help worrying about him staying out all night.

"Why didn't you come home last night?"

Huo Yuhao recalled the night of being thoroughly crushed, biting his lips, with a dry smile on his face.

"The patient's condition was complicated. By the time it was resolved, it was too late, so I stayed at the medical hall for the night."

"Can you even sleep there?"

Seeing the faint exhaustion etched between his brows, Huo Yun'er's heart ached.

"Eat breakfast first, then rest a bit more."

"…Okay."

Huo Yuhao nodded. He hadn't really slept at all. Closing his eyes, memories of last night's events flooded his mind—what he had seen, and the intensity of the treatment.

This sort of healing… was not for ordinary people.

He sighed, sitting at the table for a moment as Tang Ya and Gu Yuena came downstairs.

Seeing him, Tang Ya's eyes lit up. She pulled out a seat and asked with concern,

"Yuhao, are you okay?"

"I'm fine. Just a little tired. After breakfast, I'll go back to my room to rest."

As he spoke, Gu Yuena glanced at Tang Ya, and Tang Ya, noticing the gaze, blushed before forcing a calm nod.

"Then rest well."

She quickly retreated to the kitchen, helping Huo Yun'er with breakfast.

Huo Yuhao raised an eyebrow. Before he could question it, a waft of fragrance brushed against him. Gu Yuena had somehow moved beside him, pressing her delicate face near his neck and inhaling softly.

After a moment, she looked up, her purple eyes blinking.

"Are you treating illnesses while holding them?"

"…."
