Chapter 41: The Roommates' Unspoken Understanding
Inside the Medical Hall
The door to the ward was pushed open from the outside. The moment Jiang Nannan stepped inside, her brows instinctively knitted together in concern.
"Mom, didn't I tell you to rest properly? Why are you getting out of bed on your own again?"
Nannan's mother, hearing this, wore a gentle smile and obediently sat back down on the bed.
"You little girl… Do you think I don't know my own body? I'm perfectly fine now," she said with a faint, reassuring grin.
"That won't do. You have to wait until the doctor has checked you thoroughly. Only then can we be sure it's safe."
Jiang Nannan didn't spare her mother any face.
She still remembered how her mother had insisted she was fine, only for the truth to hit when she collapsed at home, revealing the severity of her illness.
"I just finished eating. A little movement won't hurt, trust me, I'm fine."
Before Nannan's mother could finish speaking, a knock sounded at the door. Jiang Nannan's face immediately lit up with delight.
"Please, come in."
As the words left her lips, a young boy stepped through the door, his appearance so youthful that Nannan's mother nearly dropped her jaw in shock.
This is the doctor who treated me? So young…He looks even younger than Nannan!
The thought of having been treated by such a young boy brought an inexplicable blush of embarrassment to her heart.
But that was immediately replaced by a sense of relief.
The relief came from the fact that her lingering side effects might finally have a cure. Days had passed since her initial treatment, yet those persistent "little lumps" had never fully subsided. The occasional, shocking friction against her clothing made daily life a constant source of discomfort.
Over those long days, she had tried every remedy she could think of, though none proved effective. Yet she had slowly begun to understand the cause.
Her heart had once been weak, her body essentially in a long-term state of anemia. Now that the problem had been resolved, her body struggled to adapt naturally…
…but knowing the cause didn't solve the problem. How long would this state last? If it dragged on for a year or more, she might as well have stayed in bed, anemia or not.
And these embarrassing matters were hardly something she could ask others about…
But if the doctor were a child, perhaps asking wouldn't be so awkward.
"Good afternoon to both of you. Has Auntie experienced any unusual symptoms in the past few days?"
Even though he had prepared himself mentally, Ho Yuhao's smile was still slightly stiff as he faced Nannan's mother, who had fully awakened.
The latter part of his greeting was naturally directed toward Jiang Nannan, yet he noticed something strange: Nannan's mother's face had grown a little red upon hearing his words.
Could there really be some unusual symptoms?
"No unusual symptoms. Thank you for coming all this way. I'd like you to examine my mother again, please."
Jiang Nannan quickly rose and stepped aside, turning to address her mother.
"Mom, this is the person who treated you before—Ho Yuhao."
Shaking away the intrusive thoughts racing through her mind, Jiang's mother offered Ho Yuhao a gentle smile.
"Yuhao, Nannan has explained most of the situation to me. Thank you so much for your help."
"Honestly, Auntie, your condition wasn't too severe, so the treatment process wasn't particularly difficult."
Ho Yuhao took a seat on the stool. After carefully observing Nannan's mother, he smiled reassuringly.
"From your complexion, it seems your body has largely recovered. Please place your hand in mine so I can examine it thoroughly. If everything checks out, there should be no need for you to stay in the Medical Hall any longer."
Upon hearing this, Nannan's mother brightened visibly. She placed her hand in Ho Yuhao's palm and allowed him to examine it, sneaking a triumphant glance at Jiang Nannan during the process.
"See? I told you I'm perfectly fine now."
Though Jiang Nannan felt equally relieved, she couldn't help but roll her eyes at her mother's antics.
The examination concluded quickly. Ho Yuhao opened his eyes and nodded toward Jiang Nannan with a smile.
"Auntie's illness can be considered fully cured. Just buy some medicine to gradually strengthen your body at home. Also, avoid strenuous activities for the next couple of months."
"Understood," Jiang Nannan replied earnestly. "Thank you so much this time. By the way…"
She hesitated for a moment, then cautiously asked, "Yuhao, do you happen to have a sister studying at Shrek Academy?"
After that day's treatment, she had recalled Ho Yuhao's name and realized where she had heard it before. It clicked—the 'Xiao Yuhao' her close friend Tang Ya always mentioned.
"You mean sister Xiao Ya?"
Ho Yuhao had considered the possibility that Tang Ya and Jiang Nannan might still be roommates in this life, but he hadn't expected Jiang Nannan to already know him. Could Tang Ya have told her?
Though he had long suspected, the moment he confirmed it aloud, Jiang Nannan felt the world shrink to a startling degree.
"Yes, Xiao Ya and I are roommates. She mentioned you and your mother before."
"Really?"
Ho Yuhao's curiosity was piqued. "How did sister Xiao Ya describe me at the Academy?"
The room fell into a pin-drop silence immediately.
(⊙o⊙)…
"Ahem… um… well…"
Jiang Nannan's mind went into overdrive. Her expression suddenly turned complex, her cheeks flushed as she stammered, struggling to speak what she felt was embarrassing.
"?"
Ho Yuhao, sensing something amiss, felt his smile stiffen slightly.
"What's wrong? She didn't speak badly of me at the Academy, did she?"
"No, no. She said she's very grateful that you and your mother took care of her."
Jiang Nannan waved her hands hurriedly, though her blush deepened.
How could she possibly explain the rest? How could she tell him: his sister had… odd habits?
She finally dredged through Tang Ya's peculiar stories about her younger brother and managed to pick out a few positive words.
"She said you're very capable—cooking, medical knowledge, Spirit Tools… It's like there's nothing you don't know."
"Is that so?"
Ho Yuhao looked at Jiang Nannan, whose embarrassment made her wish she could bury herself in the floor, and asked doubtfully.
"Mm-hmm," she nodded vigorously, unwilling to dwell on the topic further.
"With Auntie's illness resolved, I should—"
As Ho Yuhao prepared to take his leave, Nannan mother, who had been quietly observing the scene, finally spoke.
"Yuhao, wait a moment. You've helped us so much, we should at least have the chance to express our gratitude, shouldn't we?"
Without giving him a chance to respond, she continued.
"Auntie is being discharged today. We planned a slightly more lavish dinner to celebrate. Just the two of us would be rather lonely. Please, give Auntie the opportunity to treat you. Will you have dinner with us?"
She knew Ho Yuhao might refuse rewards to avoid burdening them, so she proposed a modest meal instead.
As expected, Ho Yuhao relaxed and did not refuse.
"Then it's trouble for Auntie. Thank you."
