Chapter 22 - The whispers of the ES rank

The morning sun poured through the curtains of Jinwoo's apartment, painting golden lines across the wooden floor. For the first time in weeks, the city outside seemed calm. The air carried no traces of mana distortions, no flickers of dungeon gates, no distant roars from beasts. It was an illusion of peace, fragile and uncertain, but it was enough for him to stand still for a while and breathe.

Jinwoo stood by the window, watching the distant skyline shimmer faintly under the sunlight. He could sense it now more than ever—the quiet hum beneath the city, the rhythm of the world that most people could not feel. His power pulsed softly within him, stronger, denser, and sharper than before. It was unlike the S Rank energy that once flowed through his veins. This was deeper, refined, almost sentient. The System had changed again.

When he closed his eyes, he could see faint golden threads of energy weaving through the world. Every movement, every heartbeat of life had its own pattern. He realized that this was the threshold of the ES Rank—the power to feel not just the presence of mana but its very purpose. The System was teaching him a new language of existence.

A soft knock came from behind him. His sister, Jinah, peeked into the room.

"Oppa, are you okay? You've been standing there for an hour."

Jinwoo smiled gently. "I'm fine. Just thinking."

"You're thinking too much again." She crossed her arms, pretending to frown. "Mom says you barely sleep. Even Jinho called and said you skipped your training session yesterday."

"I needed to rest," Jinwoo replied, his tone calm. "Something is changing again. I can feel it. The world feels… different."

Jinah tilted her head. "Different how?"

He paused for a moment, searching for the right words. "Like the air itself is holding its breath."

She blinked, confused but trusting him as always. "You always say strange things, oppa. Just promise me you'll come to dinner tonight. Everyone's coming—Jinho, Cha Hae-In, even Go Gun-Hee's nephew. You haven't seen them in months."

Jinwoo smiled faintly. "Alright. I'll be there."

The evening came with a quiet warmth. The small gathering at the Lee household brought laughter and stories that filled the air with life. Jinho joked as always, holding his stomach as he laughed at his own clumsy attempts at cooking. Cha Hae-In sat beside Jinwoo, quietly observing him with a soft smile. Even their son, little Sung Suho, ran around the room with energy, pretending to fight invisible monsters with a toy sword.

For a moment, Jinwoo allowed himself to feel human again. The warmth of the room, the sound of his sister's laughter, the soft hum of the world outside—it all grounded him in the life he had fought so hard to protect.

Yet beneath that peace, he could still sense it. The world was breathing differently. Somewhere deep beneath the surface, the mana currents were shifting in ways that felt unnatural.

Cha Hae-In leaned closer and whispered, "You've been quiet all evening. What's wrong?"

Jinwoo met her gaze. "Do you feel it too?"

She nodded slowly. "The mana around us feels… restless. It's almost like it's waiting for something."

"Exactly," Jinwoo murmured. "The balance is changing. The System isn't just watching anymore. It's moving."

Jinho, who overheard, laughed nervously. "Hey, don't say things like that at dinner. You'll make me lose my appetite."

Jinwoo smiled faintly. "Then eat fast."

Everyone laughed, but Hae-In's eyes didn't leave his face. She could tell he wasn't joking.

Later that night, Jinwoo stood on the rooftop again. The city lights glittered below like stars fallen to the earth. His shadows gathered around him silently—Beru, Igris, and the others—all watching the horizon.

"Master," Igris said quietly, "your aura has changed. It feels… higher."

"It should," Jinwoo replied. "I've crossed another threshold."

System Message:

Congratulations, Player Sung Jinwoo. Rank Advancement Achieved: S → ES.

Mana Core Stabilization in Progress. Power Synchronization: 42%.

The message faded, leaving only the faint glow of mana around him.

Beru tilted his head. "Does it feel different, my king?"

"Yes," Jinwoo said softly. "It feels like standing on the edge of something infinite."

He raised his hand, and the air around him shimmered. The shadows beneath his feet rippled outward, merging briefly with the wind before fading again. Every motion of his fingers sent soft waves of energy through the world, almost like ripples across water.

Igris knelt. "Master, with your permission, we will begin analyzing this new flow of mana."

"Do it," Jinwoo said. "But do not disturb the balance. The world is delicate now. The wrong move could alert Agnorath."

At the mention of that name, the air grew heavier. Even Beru's wings stilled.

"He's still watching," Jinwoo continued. "Somewhere out there, he's testing how far I've come. I can feel his influence on the beasts. Their coordination is not natural."

Beru hissed softly. "Then we will be ready, my king. Always."

Jinwoo looked up at the moon. "No. Not yet. This is not the time to strike. Let him move first."

The night deepened, the air vibrating faintly with unseen power. The System whispered quietly in his mind, not in words, but in fragments—symbols and feelings he could not yet fully understand. It was the voice of something ancient, something that had guided him before, now changed, evolved, perhaps even watching him as much as he watched it.

Far away, in the realm of shadows, Agnorath stirred. His eyes glowed faintly, silver light flickering in the dark. Streams of energy surrounded him, pulsing with power that resonated with the shifting of the world. He felt Jinwoo's advancement across realms, like a whisper brushing through his own core.

"So, you've finally reached the ES threshold," he murmured. "Good. The higher you rise, the more you will attract what waits above."

The air around him trembled as he absorbed fragments of power from the void, strengthening his connection to the mortal realm. His own evolution was slow but deliberate. He had reached XX Rank now, though he could feel the next stage stirring faintly within him. He smiled.

"Let us see how long it takes before you look into the eyes of the true Supreme."

---

Back on Earth, Jinwoo stood still as the wind passed through his hair. He felt calm yet aware, strong yet uncertain. The night sky stretched endlessly above him, filled with quiet stars that reflected the weight of destiny pressing against his soul.

He looked out at the city once more and whispered to himself, "If the world is changing, then I will change with it."

His shadows bowed silently. The wind carried his words into the darkness, where somewhere, far beyond, another power was already listening.
