Chapter 11 - The Escape

Adrian made a call, I guess he was trying to get all for our getaway; I am sure his enemies coming are still wondering what went wrong.

But all I could feel was an excitement that belied the danger of tonight. It was a night of many firsts, moving into an unknown world.

Sighting and feeding off the auras of the powerful, wealthy, and scheming, it was a thrill I did not expect but fulfilling.

"Follow me, Elena, my car is waiting for us at the other end of the alley," Adrian says, cutting through my thoughts.

He held my hands in a strong hold while we walked swiftly through the blocks in silence.

Bypassing some wanderers moving in the night till we got to the described location. Our car was waiting, and we were about to get into the car when I felt like I had forgotten something important in the midst of the chaos.

My senses were on alert, and I stopped Adrian. "Wait a minute," I said. He stopped and turned back to look at me. I could see the confusion on his face mirroring mine.

"I don't think it's safe yet," I stated, worried. "Yes, I know," he replied. That's why we need to leave now.

No, it's not that, at the gala, I had a strong impression of a betrayal. I wanted to tell you, but it slipped my mind in the chaos. "Betrayal? Who?" He asked.

Yes, I remember now, my mind tuning, I heard a thought that they planned this night attack with your bodyguard. Really, he replied, a subtle frown on his face and his lips curled in a smirk.

Then I guess the fun has not ended yet, so let's go, I'm sure we will find out soon.

We entered the car in silence and we journeyed in silence, our senses attuned to any form of danger. I couldn't read any strange thoughts, but I felt tension that could snap at any time.

Suddenly, our car stopped, and we were blocked by three other cars, unable to exit.

Men in dark suits stepped out holding clubs and knives. I guess Adrian and I were right, the night had not ended yet.

Adrian projected his thoughts to me, "I will stall them for a few while I want you to slip through them and run. I will find you."

I wanted to argue that I can stay and fight alongside him, but the commanding stare he gave me was intense and brooked no argument. I nodded swiftly and watched him step out.

Another man seemed to step out from the crowd of men; I guessed he was their leader; he was holding on to a man in bonds. I watched as Adrian approached him, before I could tune in to hear what the man would say. Adrian projected to me. Elena, run now!

I had no choice, I stepped out quietly and into the night; I didn't look back.

My surroundings were not familiar, but I navigated street by street till dawn and found a familiar route till I got to my alley connected to my street.

I got home, my stunning evening dress thoroughly rumpled, my heeled shoes made flat after I broke the heel to be able to walk more easily.

Getting into my familiar space, I wondered if I should have waited; after, I vowed to fight alongside him.

He might not have known that, but I wanted to, felt compelled to. Still, when he said run, all I could do was trust in his words.

"I hope he is okay," I said aloud into my room. My dingy space is silent in judgment.

After a cold shower in the bathroom, the strain of it all got to me, and I collapsed on my bed in exhaustion and fell asleep.

A loud ringing woke me up I jumped up from my bed due to the sudden interruption; shocked, I found my phone under the layers of clothes.

It was Tiffany calling, and I connected the call.

"Hey Lena, what's happening? Are you sick? It's 11 am and you are not at work."

Dumbfounded, I looked at the time and realized I had forgotten that today was also a workday.

She continued, "Answer Lena, Melissa has been asking of you, she said she has sent you multiple texts with no response." I replied, "I'm so sorry, Tiffany, you woke me up.

"Oh really, what's wrong, are you really sick? Melissa said you both have a presentation document to review together. The manager needs to give the report today."

"Yes, yes, that's true," I stated gruffly, "Tiffany, please help me file a sick leave with the HR today, I'm down with a cold.

I won't be coming in and let Melissa know too." I'm sure she can figure it out after all. She likes taking all the credit for the work done. I didn't say that out.

"Ok, Elena, I will," Tiffany replied, "Make sure you take adequate rest. I hope to see you tomorrow, ok?"

"Yes, thanks, Tiff," the call ended.

I looked around at my room, with its peeling walls, and I realized that all I had gone through all night felt like a mirage, like a scene from an action movie, even though I was never a fan of such films before I was reborn.

I could feel a dull ache in my bones, my muscles had been stretched, and the adrenaline had worn off.

I could hear the low hum of thoughts down the street, but they were not as intense as before I went to Adrian's home. I guess

I stretched my senses to the limit; still, all I could think about was Adrian; I wondered if he was okay.

I glanced at my phone, thinking of calling his line, and with a rude shock, I realized I didn't have his line digits.

I can't believe this, so I have known him for less than a week, shared a sense of intimacy and psychic pulse with him, but I cannot get a hold of him now.

I wondered if I would ever meet him again.
